Subject: National Anthem Being Destroyed

Written By: RockandRollFan on 05/20/02 at 10:19 p.m.

Take The Star-Spangled Banner and let someone who KNOWS how to sing it Traditional do it!  So many people over the years have ruined this beautiful song.  At this years Super Bowl I listened with utter amazement as Mariah Carey was able to get through about 5 seconds before taking off all over the place with her voice!  The Simpsons have even made light of this in a 1992 episode, when "Bleeding Gums Murphy" took something like 20 minutes to FINALLY finish it!  It's getting more and more difficult to listen to so now I still stand up for it but keep the sound down :(

I love Jimi Hendrix's cover of it, but Roseanne Barr, Arnold, Roseanne butchered it.  I like one version that my friend and I recorded for my daughter when she was in Amman, Jordan.  I thought we did a good job of it with a folk-rock sound.

Mariah Carey...eeeeek.  Did dogs fill the arena?

Love,
A'isha

Didn't Macy Gray screw it up too? I remember something about it on the news. She forgot the words or something and basically sucked at singing it.

We get exactly the same problem here in Aus.

Too many 'performers' think that it is a showcase for their talent (or lack of it).

The National Anthem should be an opportunity to show a bit of respect.  I fear that part of the problem is that (at least here) is is far too overplayed (e.g. at every national club sporting event) and therefore people have just become too blase about it.

And speaking of mangling national anthem, it'll be interesting of the choice of who'll sing "The Star Spangled Banner" at this year's Indy 500. Steven Tyler is still getting flak for the altered-to-fit-my-image version in which "the home of the (pause) Indianapolis 500" is, IMHO, the worst pre-9-11 disaster ever. :-X :-[

I agree with you ThunderVamp9, a lady who knows she doesn't know how to sing, and should have gotten singing lessons before even trying the anthem, shouldn't have even tried it. Roseanne ruined the song and my ears. And probally the player's brain cells. Her wailing brings new meaning to the word, whining and of course crying on the listener's part.

And if you thought that was bad, you should have hear the Bulls' Jalen Rose butcher and mutilate "Take Me Out To the Ball Game" during a Cubs 7th inning stretch. That's why the Pacers never let him sing in any of their games. :D ;D

Although, to be fair, Harry Carey was not exactly Caruso when it came to that song....

However, I have heard many folks butcher "Take Me Out"...although most Cubs fans are too crocked to notice... ;)

Well, Jalen's version was no less than a massacre.  :-X At least I remember a few lines, and I don't even like the song.
Right about Harry Carey though. ;)

true, the SSB is hard to sing, but if you practice, it gets pretty easy.  i agree with the general consensus that famous musicians totaly mutilate our national anthem.  i'm not a really patriotic gal, but have they no pride in their country?  i think our national anthem is pretty near perfect the way it is and they think they're making it better (and how bold and brazen of them to do so) by adding and taking away from the actual song.  that shows no pride for their country or their song, only their arrogance that they think they're better than the original composer (who probably had more musical knowledge in their pinky finger than most of today's 'musicians'). it really bothers me.  and it's not just the famous folk at the huge events...it's the local folk, too.  they change whatever they can to make themselves sound like  a famous, professional singer and they know what they're doing.  little do they know that they're getting so wrapped up in sounding famous that they go terribly off pitch and the audience is not happy.  at least the famous folk can stay on pitch for the most part.  i'm sure roseanne is the biggest exception, but i can't speak from having actually heard her because i was lucky enough to have missed that fiasco.  o.k. i'm off my soapbox now.

I basically can't stand singers that make thier voices "Flutter" all over the place...oh wait, I guess I'd consider that to be called R & B. I bring this up because I saw the highlights for "Talent Search" tonight and even though I think the judge was mean...I had to laugh at the girl who was rejected and carried on like a spoiled brat...saying to him "I could sing better than YOU!" and my thought imediately was well...DUH...that's why HE is a judge!  She not only showed her lack of talent but her ignorance as well.  Sorry but I can't stand the way people try to sing today...ie: "Backdoor Boys"....N'stink...ect.

Heheh - I once read something that said the SSB is proof that humans evolved from apes, because no human vocal chords can sing it  :)

I have a question about SSB. Do you place your right hand over the left side of your heart when you sing? I thought you did that during the Pledge of Allegiance. Do they do that on Australia too; or do they do something different? ???

I saw on TV not too long ago (I don't remember where) a rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" by Marvyn Gaye that was fabulous.  I really liked the soul-spin he put on it.
