What is your favorite recent movie?
Mine is "Life or Something Like It"
"Star Wars was alright, The love scenes were too corny, but I thought the ending was pretty cool.

Well the most recent movie I saw was JOHN Q with Densel Washington! It is a really excellent movie and I highly recommend it! Now for those who saw it, I know the story poses somewhat of a moral dilemma! As a hypothetical question, can anyone here picture doing what the father(Washington) did if he or she were ever faced with the same situation!

For those who haven't seen the movie, I will give you a general idea as to what it is about! Densel Washington plays the father of a young boy who becomes seriously ill, requiring a heart transplant! His insurance company will not cover the expenses, and unless the father comes up with $75,000 in cash, the hospital refuses to treat the boy even refusing to put him on a donor waiting list! Frustated and having no other options, the father takes the whole hospital and holds them hostage at gunpoint until the hospital agrees to treat his son!

I don't want to spoil it for those who hasn't seen it yet, so I won't say how it turns out, but I am interested in hearing peopes ideas as what they would do if they are faced with a similar situation!

Peace,Cat Lover

Spiderman was pretty good but I have to give my vote to John Q. There were some heartfelt scenes in that movie, one of the few to move me!

I was surprised, but I actually liked that movie. My mom wanted to see it, so we went on Mother's Day or something. It's pretty funny, and yes, the squirrel rules!

I wouldn't do the same thing he did, because I am not a violent person, I would use another approach, maybe take it to court, you never know, there is a chance you could win.
Because that is not cool, and the hospital must have been very judgemental, I haven't seen the movie, but I would use another approach.  I mean I would be really upset and frustrated about the situation, but to use a violent approach would just make it worse.  I guess it worked in the movie.
But in reality I don't think something like that would just be reversed because a whole bunch of people were held at gunpoint.

In The Bedroom
Training Day
Panic Room

The last movie I saw was The Majestic, I saw it last weekend at the cinemas.  I definitely wouldn't recommend it.
IMO, Carrey was ok (nowhere near as good as his character in the Truman Show) but Landau was fantastic.
The story and the plot were utterly contrived.
The dialogue was cliche, as was the ending, the middle and come to think of it the beginning.
Finally, the character development (also cliche) was surprisingly minimal, for a movie where character development was extremely important.
Out of ***** I give it *

To give you an idea, my ***** movies are:
Taxi Driver
American Beauty
Girl, Interrupted

Star Wars episode two definatly.Last week I went to see 'Panic Room' which was ok but not as tense as I expected and 'Dark Blue World'which was ok,not much of a story and what there was was very sad but an excellent excuse for throwing a spitfire around the sky!Brilliant, brilliant flying sequences.

Thanks for your reply, randbfan,

Truth is, I really don't know what I would do in that situation! I am cerainly not a violent person either! But there must be something to the addage that parents would kill to save their child if her child's life is in danger! As far as court, good choice, but court cases take time, which often there is just not enough of it in a life and death situation!  Anyway, it was a good piece of drama with some comedy mixed in! Yes, I know this would never happen in real life, but it does show the poor quality of health care that does exist in today's society!

The most recent movie I have seen is Spiderman - Which was surprising good (IMO) but I still think that Lord of the Rings is the best movie I have seen so far.

Maybe my answer will change once I see Star Wars Episode II tomorrow.

The Others was a great movie also -- Nice to see a real ghost story again.

I have to go with either Spiderman or Scooby-Doo.

Mr. Deeds was alright, but it was too much of a love story for Adam Sandler.  It alright if he did something like fall in love, but that was beyond what he does.  If he did something like Big Daddy, the love thing, but overall that was a better comedy.

I just saw "Shallow Hal". It was pretty good and it had an excellent point, if you looked beyond the comedy.

I saw Spiderman. I thought it to be overrated. It was alright, though. Not a 5 star in my book, but entertaining enough to have merited my time spent watching it.

I thought they could have should have chosen a different actress to play the girlfriend. That particular actress, Kirsten Dunst, didn't fit the part, IMHO. In addition, I don't know if it was the red hair or her wardrobe, but she looked "cheap".

Edited to add: Kirsten Dunst is a natural blond. My comment on her red hair (done for the movie Spiderman) only applies to her specifically. In my opinion, she happens to look much better in her natural hair color.

I just saw The Shipping News, and I really enjoyed it, even if it was a little odd and a little dark.  The Others was a good movie, but I found it totally predictable, but then, I also correctly guessed the ending to The Sixth Sense (wrote it down on a piece of paper at the beginning of the movie so I didn't spoil it for my friends).  I've definitely seen too many Twilight Zone episodes.  Fight Club got me, though.

The last movie I saw was Minority Report.  I thought it was fascinating - very entertaining and surprising.

I have to agree with Jessica on Shallow Hal.  The movie was funny, but the deeper meaning really made the movie touching.  When I first started watching the movie, I thought is was purely comedic, but as the movie progressed, I started to see it in an entirely different light.

Subject: Re: Favorite recent movie?

Written By: Junior on 08/03/02 at 03:42 p.m.

Men In Black 2 - too much of it was given away in the commericals, and plus, it just wasn't as good as the first one.

Mr. Deeds - like MIB2, most of it was given away in the commericals, and the word "wicked" was way overused in this "wicked" bad flick. ;)

Crocidile Hunter was okay, but it was a recycled plot, and I almost fell asleep during the first 30 minutes of the movie. :P

Subject: Re: Favorite recent movie?

Written By: lebeiw15 on 08/03/02 at 03:45 p.m.

Nah-- I hate it when they give away half the movie in commericials and previews.  It just doesn't make the movie as enjoyable, IMO.

Subject: Re: Favorite recent movie?

Written By: Hairspray on 08/03/02 at 04:39 p.m.

Men in Black II was just an attempt at "milking" the success of the first one. The story sucked, there was no reason to have brought that movie back for a sequel. They really stretched for a story and failed. The "bad guys" were "lame". Lara Flynn Boyle was horrid in the part. Thankfully she wasn't made to say much. The concept for her character was boring and unimaginative. The two-headed thing was annoying and more displeasing to look at than any alien I've ever seen. Surely, it had something to do with the bad acting. There was nothing redeeming in the movie. Even Tommy Lee Jones couldn't save the atrocious disaster of a movie Men in Black II turned out to be.  ::) :P >:( :P

It really makes me mad when they take something as cool as was the first "Men In Black" and ruin it.

"Mr. Deeds" wasn't too bad. It was much better than a couple of other his (Adam Sandler) movies - "Waterboy" comes to mind as does "Big Daddy". He may find it a challenge to top the comedic effect and success of "Billy Madison" or "Happy Gilmore".

I saw "Undercover Brother" (along with the last 30 minutes of "The Rookie") last night.

The Rookie was pretty good, from what I saw.

Undercover Brother was good, but nothing compared to Austin Powers in Goldmember. Loved the Michael Bolton joke.

Austin Powers in Goldmmber:
This is the last film i saw and it was soooooooo funny! Mike Myres was amazing in it as all 4 of his charactors (Austin Powers, Dr Evil, Goldmember, Fat Bastard), and to be honest i thought Beyonce' would be out of place there but she fitted in perfectly. All 3 Austin Powers movies are great but this one is without doubt the funnyest. i also thought Michael Caine was great in it too and his mini was so cool, i want one! if you are planing on seeing this film look out for (in my oppinion) the funnyest scene, with fat bastard after his sumo-match. i was crying at that scene! anyway gotta go now, go see it, and spider-man that films grea too bye!

Subject: Re: Favorite recent movie?

goldmember was a  good movie but beyonce's character was completely horrible. her character in that movie would be suitable for some cheesy black ghetto special agent flick or charlies angels... not once did she make a funny comment, she was by far the worst actor in any movie i can remember.

but anyways the funniest movie i have seen in the past couple years has to be Super Troopers... that was fucking hilarious, i would recommend it to everybody.

I haven't seen anything in a few weeks, but up until then I saw pretty much everything that came out for a while, in the theatre and on DVD.

I ended up enjoying "Spiderman" more than I thought I was going to.  (Although, IMHO, "X-men" is still the best comic book adaptation.)

If you blinked the day "Reign of Fire" was in theatres, don't worry about it.  The best scenes in the movie (the dragon fights) were all shown in the previews, and the ending was weak.

The best movie I've seen in a long time was one I rented on DVD a few weeks ago - "A Knight's Tale".  It was a good story, with great comic relief, and I loved the way it kept combining modern elements into that era.

Of course, I also liked "About A Boy".  I couldn't tell you what it was about, but I got to watch Hugh Grant for almost two hours...  Mmmmmm...

Subject: Re: Favorite recent movie?

Mystery Woman - I could watch Hugh Grant peel carrots for 2 hours - still wouldnt know what the plot was - but who would care !!!!!!!!   :P   serious drooling material.

Most recent flick I went to see - well I didnt go - it was on a plane so I didnt exactly choose it !!  Was I Am Sam.

Not being a Sean Penn fan by any stretch of the imagination this would not have been a movie I would have gone out of my way to see at a cinema.  But it really was gorgeous.

Shot in a grainy doco kind of way, with some well chosen Beatles songs to narrate the storyline better than spoken words could ever have done.
Dakota Fanning - the child - is amazing - such grown up little eyes she has, such wisdom in her face - most times she didnt need lines for you to know what was going on in her head.

Sometimes I felt Sean was simply doing "a dustin hoffman" - but other times I felt he got into his character really well.
His disabled co stars were a delight.  Some of their comments were priceless.

There were scenes when particular Beatles song were so well placed that I cried my eyes out.

I wouldn't exactly call Life As A House a funny movie.  Wipeoutgirl and I went to see this movie ages ago.  Im a sucker for a soppy movie, and at the end I was sitting there crying my eyes out (REALLY crying) when she looked at me and we both got a serious case of the giggles.  Well, here we are in the last five minutes of the movie with me trying hard not to laugh, cos when I did laugh it came out as a half cry, half laugh, half scream kind of noise - and really loud.  I missed the last five minutes of the movie so I rented it the other day to see what I missed - and I STILL cried! :'(
