Subject: Music in the 00's.

Will we remember any music out of the decade of the 00's when the decade is all said and done? Today's music seems watered down. I know we are real early into the decade but I just want opinions? Also, are we headed for trhe worst musical decade of all time?

Here is my opinion, by no means an expert one, on the music that has hit the British charts since January 1st 2000. A lot of the other essays, focus on the songs, rather than the trend of the songs.

Music since the beginning of this decade seems to be going much further toward the "fun" aspect of music - that which can - and is  - listened to by teens. This is the main audience to which British music seems to be aimed toward, be it love songs about being born to make one happy, or shiny happy songs about going, to let it out, or tragedy boy-band songs based, like so many others on the feeling of love, like "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely" or "Bye Bye Bye" - BSB and N*Sync, if nobody knows already. These songs are uninsulting, with beautiful melodies, fantastic instrumentation, (albeit mainly by sessioners, such is the nature of boybands, the skill of the singing being more important than the skill of personal instrumentation), and, at times, truly perfect writing.

Duets

The beauty of sampling allows duetting to be put to a new level. Be it electronia bands sampling songs like "Rescue Me" (Nu Generation), Sting's "Desert Rose" with Cheb Mami, or Funkstar Deluxe's "Rainbow Country" with Bob Marley. This is more a realisation of these bands/artists in the music of today, as the atmosphere of rhythm and melody is blurred within the atmosphere of instrumentation and electronic sampling.

Some artists are appearing on a record which is credited to both the artist in question (more often than not an electronia artist, such as Artful Dodger), who along with Romina Johnson scored a number 1 hit with "Moving Too Fast" - a statistic, not a case of so called "song-dropping". This is along with the common rap song that one and again appears in the chart (another duet this time), for example, Dr. Dre's/Snoop Doggy Dogg's "Still D.R.E", and, in the same week, Will Smith's "Freakin' It".

With bands such as A-Ha (Summer Moved On) coming back into the chart, 17 years after their greatest hit, Stephen Gately, a solo artist trying to make a name for himself as a singer, getting to Number 3 with Double-A New Beginning/Bright Eyes, samples such as Barry White on Black Legend's "You See The Trouble With Me", catchy teen tunes such as Kylie Minogue's Spinning Around, and catchy lyrics such as (RIP) Aaliyah's "Try Again", not even mentioning appalling videos (Rock DJ, anyone? No, thought not). Westlife scored another hit in September with a cover of "Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)" duetting with Mariah Carey (although she tried to steal the performance with her gloss), and The Spice Girls managed it again, on 29th October, with a double A - "Holler/Let Love Lead The Way", both songs of (2000-esque) quality. DJ's slipping into the bottom of the chart, DJ Zinc with 138 Trek (27), and the odd Christmas Remix hit (The Wombles with Roy Wood scoring a 22 with the appalling "I Wish It Could Be A Wombling Christmas Everyday" - just think how that'd fit into the song, and you wonder why it was so bad)

So that's the history of 2000 in a nutshell, happy songs by organized girl/boybands, with the odd cover, sample (watch out, they're getting more popular as we speak) and truly truly awful songs nowhere near the top end of pop.

Coming soon, 2001, a musical odyssey.

I liked a lot of the rock music that came out in 2000 and early 2001.  It seems to me that It's just starting to get bad the rock songs are few and far between and all overplayed.  I cant stand Default, POD, Nickleback, or any of the bands that have become popular this year. I like Third eye blind Matchbox20, 3 doors down, vertical horizon, Fuel, and everclear but their albums were released in 2000.  The only album I've bought this year is Pete Yorn.

2001 - A Musical Oddysey

A continuation of the "pop groups" scene, was accentuated in the first week of the new year, when so many went out to buy new songs to welcome in a new millennium. With four songs in the top three the first week

Rui De Silva feat. Cassandra - Touch Me
Steps - It's The Way You Make Me Feel plus flip
Fragma - Everytime You Need Me

This offers two different sides to the modern music coin, pop music, and Fragma's new mix of rock/pop and electronia.

Limp Bizkit's "Rollin'" bought by teens and others, preteens, a massive LB fanbase, and whoever else, the band having a huge following (just look at the hooded jumpers). Television stars coming into pop - Holly Valance is a modern example, but Martine McCutcheon in this such year.

Another boyband number one soon on the cards, surely no surprise with the current influx, but this time, March 11th, with a cover of Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl". Spice Girls going solo, with cover versions, and whatever else might crop up, DJ's with classic DJ material, and more, more, more flip-siders. Cover versions by children's favourites (Tweenies and Bob The Builder - it's an England thing), and finally, one number one from another duo, Something Stupid, by Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman. Nothing could top this year so far this decade, and I'm quite sure, IMO, nothing will. So many decent records never made it, but so many more managed to get there, finally scoring some remembrance of artists like Gorden Haskell.

SCREWBALL: The Backstreet Boys? Please Sampleing? Depends how it is done. If its done like Puff Daddy it doesn't sound good. The Spice Girls? Please, This is not 1997 anymore. Whats the problem with todays music? too geared to 13-15 year olds. I like songs like Weezer's 'Island In The Sun" and "Dope Nose" which are fun songs but not geared to exclusively to the teen-pop audinence. I live in the US, the UK scence is a little bit different from what I understand. The Dance-Club play stuff is still alive in the UK from what I understand. Dance Music was popular in the US in from 1988-1992. I wish people praised club music more in the US. Top 40 radio doesn't play it. I actually like Aaliyah's(RIP) "Try Again".

I was mainly talking about my sudden shift to hating modern rock.  I thought that the teen bands should have been left out of my post because they were just as bad in the 90s as they are now, and I never have liked them.   But I think Rock has gone downhill recently.  I didn't post anything about Puff daddy, teen bands, or dance songs ( but I do like the 88 - 92 Dance songs).

I think kids will remember today's music as it happened in 2010 when I become 36 years old.For me,I can remember the early to mid 1980's cause I was around to listen to it,barely though i was only in my mid to late teens.Today's music consists of rock, hard rock, rap, hardcore rap,no funk,no disco, little pop music,etc.... -howard-  8)

I think that in the 90's, Pop music sounded way different, with the invention of computers, they mixed techno beats with pop. It was new, and most of us, liked it.

It is way over used now, and personally, I think it is boring. Since about 1998 it has been boring. I think a new kinda of gener will come out in the 00's....hopefully!

Ill read some of those longer posts later, sorry, aint got much time tonight :-(

I still think music and pop culture went to hell around 1991/'92.

No, I liked Grunge and some of the rap in the mid 90's period. I think music and pop culture went downhill between 1997-1999. MTV was promoting artists like Spice Girls, Puff Daddy, and Britney Spears during that time.

Yeah, I agree with you.  While in the 80's who would've thought anyone would ever become nostalgic for the music of the decade?  I know in the early 90's, I would have never admitted to listenting to alot of the music I did.
Personally, in ten years I don't know how nostalgic I'll be for 90's tunes, or music fron the 00's in yet another ten.  All I know is that, as adults, we have alot more responsibilities in our lives; family, job, and all the rest.   Current music just doesn't "stick" now like it would've when I was a teen.

Hey, Jonman...I just wanted to let you know I agree with you.  I love the Crush album, and will continue to buy as many cd's as they want to put out, as long as they are still as good as all the others have been.  I'm no closet lover of Bon Jovi--I'll love them out loud, no problem, just as I have for all these years..but just wanted to back ya up!   ;)
And hey..for what it's worth--I play the Crush cd all the time in my car, and my five year old daughter sings it almost as loudly as I do!   ;D

The question refers to music in the 2000's. Hall & Oates hasn't released an album since 1997. If you just got "hooked" on their music within the last few years, that's great!  :D  But that still makes their music 70's, 80's and 90's (though just one hit here with "So Close").
