Subject: The time has now come for me to start...

Driving!

I have my first lesson tomorrow and am quite scared! I turned 17 back in October, but I sprained my ankle in November, and since then have been too busy with work and exams to start. Now it's finally here I'm dreading that I'm going to do somthing stupid! The first thing my friend Matt said to me when I told him I was starting was 'Don't crash'. I thanked him deeply for his confidence boost :)

What were you guys all like when you first started driving? Were you scared or excited? Any funny stories?

As sad as this sounds, I still don't have my license and I'm 22! I do know how to drive, I've just never gotten around to taking the test to get a license. That will change in August though because I need to get it done before my permit expires. Don't worry, you'll do fine. I was totally scared when I first drove, but you get over the fear. :) Good luck!

Sound advice - certainly better than if he'd left the "don't" off the front...

Best advice I can give is: stop worrying - worrying too much makes for nervous driving, which annoys other road users who can cause you to worry even more leading to a crisis in confidence.  Don't drive around thinking "I might have an accident" - if that's all you're thinking about, you probably will.

Try and enjoy driving from the start, as it's an incredibly liberating feeling

Phil

I drove into a ditch on my first lesson and had to be towed out!! We had come to a bend and I hadn't grasped the concept of turning the wheel yet!!I still managed to pass first time though. I can remember feeling like I was going at about 100 miles an hour when I was only doing about 20 when I first started to learn.I too would say try not to be too nervous and just enjoy the experience.

You'll be fine Criz  ;)

Just do it like you learned - easy !

As for stories, my brother went to the movies and saw 'Duel' the day before his driving test.

He promptly failed !

Bear in mind this was in the 70's when it was first released - we may laugh at it now, but back then that was scary stuff...

Fb  :)

(Edited as the original word I had for laugh was changed by the system from something that was totally acceptable to something that was not...)

Criz, you'll do fine.  Just relax.   :)

I got my learner's permit at 15 and 7 mos.  My mom took me out early one Saturday morning to an area that wasn't developed yet (I think car dealerships are there now) and I learned on a straight drive without power steering.  Mom was more nervous than I was, especially when I started driving in traffic.  At that age driving is definitely a liberating feeling - the feeling of going wherever you want to go without asking for a ride.  It wears off about 10 years later...

Just relax, don't be intimidated by other vehicles on the road; you'll do fine.   :)

Thanks for the support everyone :)

Well, my first lesson went great - my instructor is nice and even though I didn't do any proper driving, I'm feeling more comfortable! :] I'll be sure to inform you all if I do anything completly stupid or funny in the future! :)

Cool.  I didn't get my license 'til I was 18.  It sucked not having a license in high school, always had to hitch a ride from someone.  Drivers training was the easy part.  The only thing that bugged me was the instructor had a break on his side so he could slam it at anytime.  It went well though, I only flunked my writte test once and past my driving test with flying colors.
As for the driving part to get my licecnse I flunked twice.  Once because I couldn't parallel park.  And the second time I went down a one way street the wrong way.  Not my fault, I didn't know that part of town well.
Well anyways, good luck!!!

FABULOUS! I love driving! Always have, always will. The best piece of advice I can give is to learn on a manual. It's harder to go back and learn a stick shift if you learn on an automatic. And if you really love driving, a stick is the way to go.

Also, let your Mom THINK she's the one teaching you all her good habits, but find a big parking lot and let your friends show you how it really works. To this day my mother thinks I drive like her, but my locker partner and partner in crime knows better...

Agreed.  I'm glad I learned on a manual.  :)

Ah, lang.  You just brought back my joyful memory where nothing impressed my date more than being able to shift all the way up to 3rd gear before the tires stopped squealing on my Datsun 510 Turbo Wagon...but should we really be encouraging "sideshow" activities?   ;)

With my job I use to average around 60,000 kilometres a year, around Central Queensland.
Since I transferred to city/suburban living, I find myself driving 50yards up the road to the shops.I tend now to get lazy.
