Subject: ~Most ridiculous 2000's fads, so far

Written By: OlDsKoOl_fAiRy on 07/29/02 at 11:56 a.m.

What do you think are the most ridiculous so far? I hate the so called " natural make-up" fad. Like i was watching on tv, There was this girl who was like " Oh my, i love my new make-up! It feels so light and its so natural looking." And i could see with my own eyes all the powder and foundation on her face, even through the tv! Its funny because its like they want so desperatly hard to be natural, and they act so dumb.

Hi. Wow, you had the " Pantalones" to post this topic, you're brave. I think of commercials too. Do they expect us to believe that neutrogena mascara doesn't leave clumps in your lashes? There are too many fads and break-throughs nowadays to just name a few. Tongue pierceing..now that is what i call ridiculous.

You can't believe everything you hear or see in the adverts. And besides, those Neutrogina eyelashes look so manufactured anyway -  by which I mean, could people have eyelashes that look that great in every sample? It's the same with plastic girl-bands. Sure, eye-candy, but some grow up so jealous and hate themselves for it.

Besides, it makes lots of things a heck of a lot more difficult. I shan't go through them all

As Sagnastian once said.. There's nothing more attractive than a girl with a tounge-ring.  :P

I don't think it's gross. It's dangerous though, if it's not done right.

Yea but its gross too because people with tongue piercings always spit  and mumble, and i know this cause i saw it on discovery health. I don't think you would like someone to sprtiz in your face when they are talking to you.

On the natural make-up front: Ok, some people/companies overdo it in the commericals with the foundation, bronzer etc... I'm a person who wears the natural look a lot, beacuse big and bold does not really suit my complexion, plus its not the 80's anymore (which isn't necessarily a good thing :D). The stuff I wear is quite natural looking, but I guess in a way you can tell its make-up if you arn't subtle. The only proper colour I put on is on my eyes - and even that is usually a pale pink or bronze/gold colour, which isn't exatcly striking. I have nothing against the 'natural make-up' fad, if you can call it that!

I call it a fad because it seems like an obsession these days. But one thing is to wear make-up and admit it, like you, and another to act so pathetic on television and make peple believe that its something natural when it really is not. Do you know how many women fall for those lies everyday? " Oh, buy the new foundation-face thingie, it'll make you look a million years younger.." Then they say "..only $70 dollars "

The worst fads so far: 1.) big coorperations going bankrupt, 2.) The blonde-baring midriff look(does it ever stop?), 3.) Actors-musicians: some of these people can't act or song(please stay in your own professions) 4.) radio stations killing a song by playing 1,000 times in a month.

You could be right... I tend to think that nothing is a more attractive option than a pierced tongue ;-)

As to 00s fads - Reality TV: Big Brother, Survivor etc.  IMO, the only good thing to come out of BB is the Ben Elton book "Dead Famous" (which, if you've not read it is about applying the constant TV, closed environment idea to a murder mystery - great book, strongly recommended)

Sounds Like a good book - might have to get myself a copy! As for reality TV, I only really watch BB. I don't know why but it is just so engaging and addictive. At the start of this series, I thought I wouldn't watch it as much, and I didn't then. But these last 2 weeks of it - I was glued really. It's quite pathetic in a respect, but it's so, so addictive :) At least I only watched the Channel 4 edited 10pm shows - some people constantly watch all the live feeds, or are hooked on the net to it. That's going a bit overboard. Maybe some psychologists should analyse the viewers instead of just the housemates :D

I'd settle for before- and after- IQ tests (or maybe "during" seeing as reports seem to show a brain-numbing effect so people are unable to change channels even though their "conscious" mind tries to...

My two peneth on the makeup front.I hate the way they use a model who is obviously about 18 to advertise wrinkle creams."after just 8 days all my wrinkles vanished" Hello??  what wrinkles. Also why oh why do the girls on make up counters feel the need to wear every product on sale at once?? The effect can be terrifying,I've certainly been put of by the bright orange, plastered on with a trowel look!

What about the trousers the lads are wearing today. How do they walk with the crotch between their knees?? They look so stupid and surely they must chaff when they do walk........

Now, how to design this experiment...

We'd need a control group who are watching something more intellectually challenging, say, University Challenge; a blind of people who think they're watching BB, but are actually watching UC, and a double blind who've had both their eyes poked out - isn't that how it works?

Yep - that's pretty much a good outline of how it works. At least there will be no investigator effects if the 'double blind' conditions are actually blind ;) Now the question is finding willing participants to take part in the particular 'blinds'. Maybe we could generate some volunteers from the message board :]

Never figured that out.  What's that all about anyway?  At first I thought it was a bunch of bike riders (so they wouldn't get the chain caught in their pants) but I never see any bikes.

I think Big Brother is one of the worst reality shows, and whats with the two episodes a week?

another fad I hate is radio only playing a few select songs and ruining them by repeating them over and over for months.

another fad I dislike is the whole fast and furious thing. for those who don't know it's when you take a underpowered car (Usually a 4 cylinder Honda, Nissan, Acura or toyota), and do this to it:

http://www.aros.net/~mstahnky/humor/Rice/Rice%20Prelude.jpg

This was a prelude once. I thought the fad was kind of cool before that movie came out, but now everyone is doing it, I just think It's dumb.

How about men who shave their chests? I'll admit it looks nice but come on... How many guys past puberty have no hair on their chests? And I've heard the newest trend is for men to shave everywhere.

As a guy, I think shaving chest and back hair is fine, but armpits and some unmentionables? Eww.

I don't mind men shaving their chests, as I really dislike extremely hairy chests. Though, If there's only a little bit then what's the point?

Once I went to see a play with college, and there was a bit of nudity in it. One man had such a hairy back ( and chest for that matter) that me and my friends literally thought he had dirt all over his back. That guy needed a good shave - was not a pretty sight!

OK - tongue piercing - yes really stupid - results in chipped front teeth, speech impediments, and really revolting tumour sized scarring when they decide to remove them.

Males wearing 3/4 length short trousers or long shorts (who knows) - with the crotch down around their knees, and the waist band below their plumbers crack.

Midriff tops and belly botton piercing on girls over sized ten.  C'mon ladies - its just not pretty.  I am well and truly over sized ten and I look in the mirror each day and sensibly say "well no - I really am too big to wear hipsters with a midriff top - so I wont !".  If your gut or butt is hanging over the top of your jeans - DONT SHOW IT !

Philbo - great taste in books !!  I am a big fan of Bens and have met him many times over the years as he writes most of his books - including Dead Famous - in my city - his second home.  Dead Famous - as with all of his books - is an instant topical look at current events.  I would love to see it made into a movie.

Hairy men - I have to admit - i LOVE the current shave/wax it all off craze - love smooth men !!!!

Another "fad" of the 90's and 00's that I thoroughly hate - is these manufactured bands and solo artists who can have a number one single without ever performing live and then 12 months later can release a "greatest hits" album.  Remember the days when someone worked their guts out playing live in seedy pubs and clubs before they could afford to cut a record, then they toured - and sang live.  And they had released at least 10 albums before they bothered with the "greatest hits".

Just for balance on the issue of tongue piercings - I've had mine for nearly 5 years now and don't have any problem with chipped teeth, speech impediments or keloid scarring where it goes in. It's perfectly comfortable and most of the time I forget it's there.

Having said that, I could well be luckier than others in that respect.
