Subject: Baseball & Softball May Get Tagged Out @ Olympics

Written By: RockandRollFan on 08/29/02 at 08:28 a.m.

I'm not a big Olympics fan for many reasons, including every 2 years now instead of 4, the continued scandals (Including the old ones...1972 USA Men's GOLD Medal Winning Team!) and now they want to drop baseball (In which we weon the gold in 2000) and softball, in favor of golf and rugby.....read all about it at this link:

Hmm
One of the reasons they suggest is 'failure to attract top professionals'.  I remember when the olympics was an amateur competition!
It's a shame that an event like the olympics, something that has survived ages, is being destroyed by the quest for more money.
I'm sure the ancient Greeks would be impressed at the progress our culture has made  ???

o.k. now let me get this straight...the goal is to modernize the olympics...so why are they cutting baseball and softball for less modern sports like golf?  (i don't really know the history of rugby, so i'll play it safe and not include it at the moment.)  i understand putting rugby in...it takes skill, athleticism and stamina, which are characteristics i've always believed were the cornerstones of the olympic games and sports in general.  i'm sorry to all you golfers out there, but golf strikes me as a leisure sport (and i use the term 'sport' very loosely here).  yes it takes skill, strategy and patience, but that's about it.  of course that's my opinion.

Yet ANOTHER reason I don't like the Olympics! But just remember....it was ONLY amatuer for non-communist countires....we used to beat the Russian professionals with our amatuers ;)

Yes, but that's what I mean...it was unfair for our countries...being forced to compete as amatuers, against thier professionals.  Up until '72 though...the USA never lost a Gold medal game in basketball...I still feel we won in '72.  I started a thread over in 70's on that very topic.  By the way Taoist, you're spinning avatar really bothers me ;) Kidding :D

Well I had to buy a wider monitor to hold Jeannie in..but then when I moved her lower I returned the special monitor and got my $ back.  I'd know Idea animations could cause this much trouble ;) Seriously though, I really like your spinning one :)

i never read that article for a number of reasons.
i am a huge baseball fan but i could understand why they would want to get rid the sport in olympics.
they probably have different reasons but the way i see it, there aren't enough countries to put up any decent competition.. baseball is completely dominated by the Americas and Japan... while golf and rugby are played so much more all over the world..
it would just make more sense to have those sports in there instead.

If they want to put golf in the Summer Games, why not bowling? A exciting participant sport but a boring spectator sport, just like curling in the Winter Games. Or how about auto racing, or horse racing, or hot air ballooning? None of those involve skills other than bumping and crashing, inserting propane tanks, or whipping horses. :-/

They probally figured that they would just drop one borring sport for another. Baseball is boring and so is golf.

IG, have you ever ridden a horse?  Now, have you ever crouched (leaning forward a bit on your feet-balls - that's your only real support) on a horse for 2 min while pulling in on his mouth which leads a 1000-lb beast going 35mph ?  Try it sometime.     ;)

As for bowling, I'm also a little biased but, because it tends to be quite quick, I enjoy watching it as well as playing.  Unlike baseball and golf.   (place snoooooze face here)

And, I'd add that car-racing does take skill, although like golf and bowling I still question the "athleticism".
