Subject: ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!!

Written By: RockandRollFan on 09/08/02 at 08:03 a.m.

Well....FINALLY, it's the start of the NFL season today!  I really do hope that all your favorites win (Unless of course they happen to be playing the Broncos!) ;) Pretty exciting college games yesterday as I was hoping to see Alabama defeat Oklahoma....still a great game even though the Sooners pulled it out.  My CU Buffs were not real impressive but did finally get a "W".  So this thread is for all you football fans...let's all enjoy a fun season :D

Well so much for the Lions, their season is already over.  Ish, it was over before it began.  I like to see the Raiders get it.  My favorite player plays for them, Charles Woodson.
As for the great Wolverines, 2-0!  Nice win over western.

Jets are 1-0 after a lackluster performance today.  Thanks to Chad Morton ;D we won.

On the college front - my local team is Rutgers who are 0-2.  We will probably win about 3 games and the only good thing we have going for us is the local tv commercials with Tony Soprano supporting our team.

The Colts barely survived by the skin of their teeth today, beating Jacksonville 28-25. The defense did save the offense from a 3 turnover game, which was not the intent of Coach Dungy when he was hired to shore up the defense. Edge is coming back from an injury, but what happened to Peyton? And where was Marvin Harrison. Oh, well, Reggie Wayne had a good game. And the D made the plays it needed to win. So hopefully, we;ll see a team ready to play in the Dome in the weeks ahead. ;)

I'll second that what a good win for the Jets. I'm concerned about 3 things though for the Jets 1.) surviving the Month of December, 2.) Curtis Martin's injury 3.) the defense(which did not look good at all today.) As far as the other New York team is concerned how come the Giants cannot score a touchdown? Forget about Rutgers. Penn State is my team but they almost got beat by Central Florida.

While my Ohio State Buckeyes are doing just fine (was that#7 Michigan we just jumped over in the AP 25?), the NFL is letting me down.

Great games, except for my teams.  The Cardinals played a good first half, but someone in the locker room must've reminded them, "uh, guys, cut it out.  You're the CARDINALS."  cuz that 2nd half stunk.

And as for the Steelers......well it made me so sick last nite, I'm home from work today.

At least I won my fantasy football game!

Dammit, looks like M lost to ND.  Good game though, was close all the way, and there was many mistakes and penalties called.  Make that 2-1.  Next week is a bye week, oh what to do?  On the positive side, State lost to Cal 46-22 I think it was.

Congratulations, Penn State. But they have to play the Big Ten schedule. I believe Indiana and Purdue are the only Big Ten schools that haven't beaten PSU in football since they joined the conference in 1994 (I think). I think it's time for that to end. ;)

Dang it!! The Colts lose to the Fish at home again. The good thing is that the Shoes  don't have to play them again until 2006 (if we are still in Indy). The bad news is we can't return the favor at their confines. I'd rather just see the Colts beating up the weak AFC South division. If we finish 9-7 and win the division, that's be okay with me.

Funny you should mention the Colts leaving the AFC East. As a New York Football Fan(Giants and Jets) I was so happy to see the Colts leave the AFC East. They used to kick the Jets butts twice a season. With that said I think the Jets play the Colts once this year. The Colts record against the Jets since 1989 is pretty dominating. Anyway's with that said the Jets got their butts whipped by the Patriots today.  The Giants beat the Rams today(yes, finally we beat the Rams.) It seemed like every year when the Giants and Rams met the Rams would always beat the Giants(in a route or a come from behind victory.) I'm sure some giants fans still have that Flipper Anderson catch stick in their heads from the 89-90 season. The Rams have always been alot trouble for the Giants since the decade of the 80's. If the Giants could ever score touchdowns on a consistent basis they could be a Super Bowl team. They have good players(Michael Strahan, Tiki Barber, Armani Toomer, Ike Hillard, Jeremy Shockey, and Kerry Collins has looked sharp this year.) Other highlights this weekend include Notre Dame beating Michigan, California routing Michigan State, and Penn State routing Nebraska.

Now that a day has passed and I can talk about it - My Jets got their a**es kicked by the Patriots or as I call them "the athletes formerly known as Jets".  I thought we had such an easy schedule and would go 2-0 easily but now I'm worried about next week's game with Miami because they looked good on the highlights.

But on the college front, Rutgers won their first game ;D - I know it was against Army but a win is a win.

Broncos are looking good this season, playing much better than last year, even though they are lacking effort in offense, they are still getting it done, and their defense is pulling it out for their team. Broncos show heart, even if I wasn't a homer, I would still love the Broncos, due to the fact that they even though sometimes they have bad games and seasons, show resillience in their playing out on the field, and that is what I love about them, yes I do get frustrated with Griese, but who doesn't. I think in the end he will pull it off.
I am anxious to see the matchup this coming sunday between the Bills and the Broncos. Hopefully our team wins, if not cool too, because I also like the Bills. But my favorite team is the Broncos, so I am going to have to pull for them, the Bills are almost right behind.

Buffs Dispatch UCLA 31-17!

All week I had been quite un-happy that my Buffs had gotten slaughtered by Southern Cal last weekend....but then I started to think..well..."Little Red" was hammered by Penn State (Low ranked at the time) and USC was 18th when they beat us. Then I also remembered how nebraska chooses powder-puffteams to play AT HOME before thier conference schedule begins. After yesterdays game I am ecstatic.  I don't think Colorado has a legitimate shot at the National Chapionship (Because of thier 2 losses) but hey....it's ONLY because they're NOT nebraska! Anyway, It was a great game yesterday and I hope the Buffs can keep the momentum going for the rest of the season!

I hate those damn college polls.  It's the same damn thing every year.  With M being ranked 14 and Penn State ranked 15,  I don't get that.  PSU is undefeated still and M has one lost.  IMO,  I think PSU should be ranked a step up above M.  The polls are nothing but a popularity cotest.  Look back in '97,  M did have the best team all around that year no matter what they were ranked.  I just took forever for those damn bastards to see that.

Good point Sagnastian...I couldn't agree more!  Stupid "Little-Red" was given a share in '97 all because old man osbourne decided to retire.....I only consider Michigan the #1 for '97....not NU.  Also, to  be completely fair....I truly believe that un-beaten GA Tech deserved it alone in 1990.  CU should've been ranked 2nd.....now let's hear all the CornF*cker fans admit how many times they got a gift by being #1 when they didn't deserve it >:(

I remember 1988 when West Virginia had one of their greatest seasons ever, going undefeated, but being ranked behind a team with one loss (either Miami Hurricanes or Florida State) but at least they were paired up with #1 Notre Dame in the 1989 Fiesta Bowl.  Unfortunately, WVU QB Major Harris was hurt in that game and the Irish prevailed…

Yeah thats true Michigan should have won the National Championship without having to share it with Nebraska. How about that one year I think it was 1993 and Notre Dame beat Florida State and took #1 than a couple weeks Notre Dame got upset by Boston College. I still don't get it Notre Dame beats Florida State in a head to head game and doesn't even get a share of the National Championship. Highway Robbery!!!! Well the good news: Penn State and the New York Giants won this weekend. Giants at 3-2 this year(not bad for them.) Collins is a good quaterback and the passing game has really improved this year. 21 Points is a good number of points to put up. The defense is playing well as usual. Penn State is back. The Iowa game was contriversal. Iowa is good team though and will challenge for the Big Ten Title. Penn State playing Michigan will be a very good game this upcoming weekend. The bad news: The Jets lose again. Pennington played a good game though. The offense stunned me. The defense has got to get better. In other news Jacksonville beats Philly and the Arizona Cardinals look like a dangerous team this year. Yes I said the Arizona Cardinals.

The good news is:

The suddenly non-contractable Minnesota Twins beat the Oakland As and are facing the Anaheim Angels in the American League Championship Series  ;D (Although Bud Selig says he's not sure he'll be able to attend any games at the Metrodome)

The bad news is:

The Vikings are playing this week  :P

I wouldn't mind seeing the Angels in the Series, since they've never done it before. But I think the Twins are on a mission this year. It could be their last chance to make a statement to "Bud" Dumber and the other conspirators in their contrition plan. And I'm surprised none of the so-called experts picked Minnesota to win their division, considering they almost won it last year.
And as for the Vikings, let's look on the bright side. The Rams, Cowboys and Steelers are struggling this year. (Sorry, Hossy :-X)

Weren't the Rams supposed to be the offensive juggernaut of the millenium?  There are a lot of fantasy owners out there with destruction in their hearts for wasting their first pick on Marshall Faulk.  Pittsburgh is another mystery -- although Kordell has always been a marginal NFL quarterback; and, when fat running backs get old, they sure get old quick.

I wonder about Randy Moss and his problems!  You may not know this, but he's been in trouble ever since high school!  His senior year in high school, he was the top player in West Virginia but was kicked out of school before he could graduate, and his Notre Dame scholarship was revoked.  Went to Florida State, smoked pot, got kicked off.  The boy has been in a heap of trouble!

It's not Dunbar, it's DuPont, named for a nearby chemical plant.  The school no longer exists; it merged with East Bank (Jerry West's alma mater) in 1999 to become Riverside High.

Speaking of football...I think Emmitt Smith just set the all-time rushing yardage record...let's see here...

Well, the story didn't say (it hasn't been posted yet I guess) but I'm sure that means Emmitt rushed for more than 93 yards today.  Congrats to Emmitt, and may he shoot more commercials with Alf.

Well, I am not Emmitt Smith, thank God. But it is still a big record and he should be congratulated for breaking it, even if you hate the Cowboys.
On the other end of the spectrum, thanks, upstairs officials for not even reviewing the last "fumble" and confirming the fans' suspicion that the NFL (officiating and otherwise) is biased against us for "stealing" Baltimore's team when it was given to us by the Irsays. Even though the Redskins blew the big lead, they shouldn't have had it in the first place. And to Peyton Manning, quit throwing the daggummed INT's or the fans will be forced to make a deal for John Kitna (J/K)(no, Jim Irsay would make a deal for Kitna).
And congrats to the Redskins, whom I would still be rooting for if not for Daniel "Federal Distress" Snyder or Steve "Fuhrer" Spurier. (That's enought venting for the night. I'm late for curb service for garbage collection tomorrow.)

Being the Steeler fan that I am (ahem....looked mighty good yesterday didn't they?) I'm a bona-fide, dyed in the wool, true blue Cowboy hater from waaaay back, but I've got to give Emmit his props. Heres to one of the greatest backs ever. Hip hip

Hossy, I share your same view as far as the cowpies are concerned....ironically, in the 70's while my Broncos weren't having a whole lot of success, I was a HUGE Steeler fan. Now, as for Emmitt....I will STILL say if you had switched Barry Sanders and smith...Barry has nearly 18,000 yards by now and emmitt has retired with about 12,000.  IMHO, he is a mediocre back at best...sorry to emmitt fans, I mean no offense (Pardon the pun) :D

Subject: Re: ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!!

Yeah Mark, I started liking the Steelers when "Jefferson St." Joe Gilliam was quarterback (you can imagine how big that went over in a little southern town in the 70s) so I've been with them through real thick and real thin. As far as your comment on Emmit, you're probably right but I've gotta go with "Dandy Don"......"if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a wonderful Christmas." :D
And excuse me for rambling, but Va. Tech is #6 in the BCS poll this week. I guess after we go undefeated, go to Miami the final regular season game and whip them, beat Notre Dame or Oklahoma in the national championship game, then we might get the recognition we deserve.

Well Hossy, I used to have an autographed picture of Franco Harris....it's long lost :(  As much as I liked Franco, I was on Jim Browns side when he was saying that if Harris broke his record of 12,312 that he would un-retire just to break it.  Brown said that Harris ran out of bounds to avoid contact...I feel the same about emmitt.  Walter Payton, IMHO was, is and always will be the Greatest.  He punished linebackers and everyone else who tried to bring him down. I also wish that Barry Sanders would just "Un-retire" so he could pass smith..I don't think it would take him long at all.  Enough of my carrying on though on that subject.  I will give emmitt a congrats for sportsmanship sake...but that's all.

As for My Colorado Buffs, they have already lost 2 games so the national title is probably over...but we are up to #12!

And speaking of weak lines, the local sports show's hosts complained about how the Colt's line is not protecting Peyton as well as it should and is keeping Edge from gaining 100 yards in the past 5 games. And this is virtually the same offensive line that once had the fewest sacks allowed and made Edgerrin one of the finest during his rookie season. You can cool down the talk of a National title for the Irish, Rice Cube. And congrats to Chucky's Eagles. But, right now, Oklahoma and Ohio State are playing better than Miami. They needed a convincing 4th quarter to hold off Rutgers  ??? And the two O's are beating worthy opponents big. It would be a shame if the Buckeyes ran the table and defeated Michigan, then not play in the National title game. It would also suck if Iowa did not play in the Rose Bowl due to Ohio State being slighted by the BCS. And Virginia tech is next for the 'Canes, so they have to play better than they did against Rutgers if they hope to beat the Hokies.

Sag, I noticed in your profile your age is hidden. Maybe you're too young to remember when all you heard about was Big Ten football. When it was 180 degrees the other way from how you say it is now. When Bo was at Michigan and Woody was at Ohio St. and those two teams were always ranked 4 or 5 spots higher than they should have been because of the conference they were in. I grew to loathe Big Ten, corn fed, three yards in a cloud of dust football.
