Subject: Ex-Colt QB Johnny Unitas Dead at 69

Written By: Indy Gent on 09/12/02 at 06:01 p.m.

The great Johnny U., otherwise known as John Unitas, died of a heart attack this week. In 22 seasons as a quarterback with the Baltimore Colts, and one in San Diego, he had amassed up to 22 passing and scoring records. He threw a touchdown pass in 47 straight games, a record that may never be broken. No one has even come close. At 69, Johnny Unitas will be missed by many. :'(

I remember when I was little I loved the Baltimore Colts!  I remember Super Bowl V when they beat the CowPies.  He didn't play much in that one but I still can see Norm Bulaich carrying the ball, and Jim O'Briens 32 yard field with 5 seconds left to win it!  I miss the old Baltimore Colts.  I look at the Ravens and consider them to be Raiders East....dirty & whiny.  Most of all I'll miss Johnny Unitas :'(

I may be biased, but the uptight NFL has denied Peyton Manning's request to wear Johnny Unitas' trademark high top shoes as a tribute to the the late quarterback. They said that only the Ravens could wear those as a tribute, since Unitas liked the Ravens more than the "Indianapolis" Colts. I think it's unfair that the Colts, or it's present QB, can't do anything to pay tribute to a fine athlete. Just because the Irsays have victimized Baltimore doesn't mean the NFL has to punish Indianapolis for a good gesture. All of his records are still with the Colts, even if Unitas, in his last days, didn't want to believe it. I wonder how the organization will treat the "Los Angeles" Colts, if indeed the city is treated by Jim Irsay the same way his father treated Baltimore. >:(

Is there a corporation, institution or company in the United States more opposed to self expression than the National Football League?

Maybe Communism or a dictatorship, but not by much. :(
