Subject: Two Thousands or Twenty Hundreds.

Written By: superrich23 on 09/17/02 at 09:22 p.m.

My dad and I have had this discussion over the past three years of this new millenia, and he got me to thinking. Maybe it sound better, and it makes more sense to say Twenty 0 two, then two thousand two. Because last Century, we had a habit of saying 1901, 1931, or 1984, and not One thousand nine hundred and one, and so on and so forth. I know this is a a weird topic, but I just wanted people to respond to this and tell me what they think.

Well, right now I say Two Thousand two, but once we hit 2020, I'll probably say Twenty Twenty.

End Quote

Well come to think of it Natalie, it is almost mainly about the syllables, how many there are and how you say them. Like Twenty Hundred, it would be much better to say Two thousand right now, because it is easier to say. But my dad is saying the proper usage is Twenty hundred. I agree with both points of view.

As for me, I'm gonna say two thousand, two thousand one, two thousand two, etc. until two thousand nine, then I'm gonna say twenty ten.  Of course you could call this year "twenty-aught-two" but it just doesn't have that ring to it…

It is complicated in this decade because, in a sense, you're spelling out two letters. Twen-T-O-One, Two thousand and one, for example. Try it out, it sounds weird.

Twen-T-Fif-Ty, on the other hand, and Twen-T-Thir-Ty-Nine, I think there's a difference here, because they're in two better looking millenium slash decade halves. Or at least, I think that's why.

I just say "Oh two".  No need for the Twenty bit.

And I am calling the entire decade the Naughty Noughties.

LOL

What about the people (rarely, usually TV documentaries, etc) who say "19-3" for 1903?  I HATE that!  So I guess we should say "20-2" right now!  Oops, that sounds dumb....22?

I agree about the # syllables, but I'm in the habit of saying 2-thousand----.  I know if I don't change before then, I'll change by 2010 "twenty-ten" and certainly by 2011!  I've always said "nineteen-oh-3" e.g.

What about the 1000s?  In history discussions I haven't heard too many say "one-thousand five" or "one-thousand sixty-six".  It's mostly been "ten-sixty-six".  Why can't this century be the same?

Wow I never really stopped to think about it but I guess I'm in the change at 20-10 camp. Although twenty -ought-two would go along with the dialect in mine and Don's "neck of the woods." ;)
