Subject: Three More Football Deaths: Hayes, Webster, Hart

Written By: Indy Gent on 09/25/02 at 11:59 p.m.

Three more legendary football heroes have passed on this week. "Bullet" Bob Hayes is the only person ever to win an Olympic gold medal and a Super Bowl ring (with Dallas in 1971). Although his career was cut short by injuries and drug charges, he was once called the "Fastest Man in The NFL". He died of kidney failure at 59. :'(
Hall-of-Famer Mike Webster is considered by some to be one of  the greatest offensive linemen ever. He helped the Steelers win 4 Super Bowls, and he was instrumental in protecting Terry Bradshaw and opening holes for Franco Harris. Unfortunately, he suffered major brain damage as a result of his career. And he was forced to sell his Super Bowl memorabilia because of financial difficulties. He was only 50. :'(
Finally, Leon Hart, the only offensive lineman to win the Heisman trophy (for Notre Dame), died in his sleep yesterday. He was 73. :'(
