Subject: The new pop-up ads?

Written By: Screwball54 on 11/24/02 at 08:35 p.m.

Is anyone else anoyed by the "new" pop-up ads around the net recently?  Such as the ones that say: "Warning! your PC is broadcasting an IP Address (duh)" or "do you want to install date time manger free upgrade?" (upgrade my @ss).

I hate them.  I installed a pop-up destroyer and took care of 90% of those, but new ones keep popping up because the popup people have random URL generators or something.

Oh yeah. I hate ALL pop up ads! Especially the ones that pop up in a fashion that forces you to go up and move it just to get rid of it!  >:(

Don't forget the one asking "Is there porn on your PC??"

That one POs me, I had to explain that to my wife and I have had it come up on my work computer too.  They should be illegal.

You can get rid of the pop-ups without having to instal anything. Those pop-ups are written in a scripting language called JavaScript. To get the pop-ups to stop, all you have to do is go into internet explorer tools>internet options>security>custom level> and then disable the scripting features. This will stop your computer from running JavaScript. You will have to turn it back on again if you use Hotmail, as they require it for you to check your emails. Some other sites have valid uses for it too.

One other side note, while you are in internet options, click on view files, and see all the cookies and files on your computer. You may be amazed at all the stuff there.

That does really tick me off. They outright LIE. And even worse are the ones where the little 'x' at the top of the window, the one that is supposed to close the window, is really a link. Arghhh... do not get me started about this topic. I hate this as much as I hate spam.

Yes. :( I'm even getting pop-ups when I check my e-mail.

Browser Bombs are the Worst.  >:(

You close one window and it opens another one... and another one.... and another one....

By the time you try to keep up closing them all, you have hundreds of windows open!  :o >:(

Fortunately, a browser bomb only happened to me once. Yes, It was enough to cause my hatred of them.

...or use Opera instead (F12 and click "Refuse Pop-up Windows")

OMG those are about the worst!!  And, of course, when you think you have closed all the ads, you've closed what you wanted to see in the first place!!  >:(

Also bad are the ones that are like instantly minimized..but it doesn't say what it is..and it won't maximize..you end up having to ctrl-alt-del JUST to get rid of it--WHATEVER it is!  >:(

Not meaning to sound like a broken record: but if you use Opera rather than IE, you can have all your windows as MDI children (i.e. contained within the Opera main window), so that you can close all the nasty little popups in one click.
