Subject: Women at Augusta National?

Written By: Screwball54 on 12/09/02 at 09:25 p.m.

There has been a controversy recently over the lack of female members at Augusta National. Feminist Martha Burke has gained national attention by starting this debate. So do you think she is right and Augusta National should be forced into allowing a women member, or do you think Augusta National, being a private club, should be allowed to choose whoever they want?

Also: Women are allowed to play golf at Augusta National as long as they are invited by a member. The general Public(Male or Female) is not allowed to play unless they are invited.

Just like you said, it's a private club.  Why should a club that's been around for decades be forced to change its rules now because of some loudmouth feminazi?

Besides, there are lots of female-only clubs out there, why haven't they complained about those?  Talk about a double standard.

I am not against women playing at Augusta, but I do think they should try to respect a private club's rules.  I guess in this case, since they can't boycott (it wouldn't help anyway) the only way they can protest is by b!tching about it on the national media.

Women members at Augusta?  Absolutely not.

Women can and do play there.  They just can't become members.  Nothing wrong with that.  As said before, its a private club and its their rules.

Martha Burke is involved in this because she saw a chance to further her name and agenda and ran with it.

My hat goes off the the leaders at Augusta for not caving in to the criticism.  Kudos to them.

Martha Burke and the Augusta issue is just another case of liberalism and political correctness gone too far.

Quoting:

End Quote

They only reason they are protesting is because the PGA has a major tournament there.  I think it is a crock.  I can't stand all this so called "political correctness".  I agree, it is a private club and if they don't want to let women in then they don't have to.  My only question is why would any of these women want to be where they aren't wanted?  It is beyond me.  I hear that I can't go somewhere because of my sex and I just go elsewhere.  Not worth my time.

You have all hit the nail on the head. Augusta is a private club. End of discussion.  ::)

Something to add: It's not that Augusta National does not want women, or will never have a women member.  They just have never chosen a women to join.  Rumor is that they were considering a women member before Martha Burke raised a fuss.
