Subject: The Smallpox vaccination and you...

Written By: Vampira on 12/11/02 at 05:06 p.m.

I read on the CDC site today that there are certain people that should not receive the smallpox vaccination that they want to start giving us. Guess what? I can't get it because I have psoriasis,a skin condition. Apparently people with skin conditions can get very ill and have adverse reactions to it. This makes me very happy actually because I have heard some bad things about it. What do you think about getting the smallpox vaccine shot?

I think I was vaccinated as a kid. Been there, done that and I am not planning on have it done again.

I had it done also as a child, but they want all of us to get it again.

If they make it available to all of us, I wouldn't hesitate to get it for both me and my daughter.  Smallpox is one disease I wouldn't want to take the chance at getting.  Man, biological warfare is scary.

I know they do but I will not get another one if I have a say in the matter.

There are no "bad things" about the smallpox vaccine. Smallpox vaccine stops people getting smallpox. That's what it does. That's all it does. And if you'd rather get smallpox than the vaccine, you're welcome to it.

Vaccination is vital!

I was vaccinated almost 40 years ago because I had to have it when I entered school.  I don't know if I'm still immune.

I'm terrified of needles but I guess I'll have to learn to overcome it at least enough to get the vaccination. I wonder why they would make people get them again if they got it as a child. I'm not sure if I was vaccinated or not as a kid, I'd have to ask my mother I guess. I'm not only terrified, I have a major phobia of needles.

I hear that. I have an acute case of "needleitis." If I don't have to get one, I don't.

Damn, smallpox was irradicated in the 70s, which means I never got the vaccine as a kid...I think I'll make an appointment soon.

Over 95% effective, Gore.  People with suppressed immune systems (i.e., HIV), aren't eligible for vaccination.  And about 500 in a million have severe adverse affects.  Some bad things, but statistically very small.  It's a good idea to get the vaccine.

I heard today that the smallpox vaccine may have some bugs in it...so it might be a good idea to learn more about it before you take it.  I think you can do that during your appointment, but if you're skeptical do some research so you can avoid the co-pay ;)

I was watching ABC's "World News Tonight" and they were testing this on students at Vanderbilt University and a lot of them got side effects.  I went through this almost 40 years ago and I hope I don't have to go through this again.

when i was in the Navy I was forced into getiing the anthrax vaccine.  this is nothing in compairison, the anthrax vaccine consisted of four shots in the arm then 1 shot every year after the initial 4.  The worst "side effect" i had was a sore shoulder.

Some "side effects" you can survive makes the vaccine worthwhile to me.  I'd rather not die, as much faith as I have in my immune system as is :-/

Hey Screwball, do you know where they'd have a reference to the smallpox vaccine that's potentially being distributed?

Here is info from the CDC:

Good enough man, thanks :)

Doesn't sound that bad.  If I had to take a chance of maybe dying versus certainly dying, I'll take the vaccine ;)

Hmmm...the chances of dying due to vaccination are very low...Unless they've changed the vaccine somehow or the terrorists find a way to mutate the virus, I think it's a no-brainer.  Take the vaccine, but consult a physician ;)
