Subject: The Dreaded F Word

Written By: Eli_Sheol on 12/14/02 at 01:30 p.m.

Back when I started getting into modern music around 1970 or so, even bands that were considered to be 'acid rock' bands rarely used the 'F' word. In concert they would to a certain extent, but you hardly ever heard it on a record album. The song that caused a big stir when I was a kid was "The Pusher" by Steppenwolf.
Now days almost all of the popular bands use it a lot. I don't really have anything against that, however I like to listen to music when I'm working in the yard and I have a lot of kids that hang out at my house on a regular basis. I don't feel real comfortable with having the dreaded 'F' word screamed out over and over with my middle aged neighbors across the street working in their yard or with little kids running around.
Because of this, a lot of the bands I like to listen to I can't listen to most of the time.
I think that a lot of bands ten years ago started using it more and more to make a statement and to be popular with teenagers who are going through their rebellious period. Which I think almost all teenagers are.
However it seems like over the last couple of years a lot of bands, especially rap singers, are coming out with "clean" versions of their music.
Smart move. There's no reason to alienate half of your potential customers by offending them--or their parents.

I remember the days when there wasn't much profanity in the music world (look at me, I sound all old and omniscient now).  That was still good music.  I also remember when rap and R&B and some soft rock even started to incorporate swears into their lyrics, and that was good music too.  But I do think some are in excess.  I guess it depends on the song, but I think there should be a balance between using a word for effect or meaning, and using it just because the censor board will let you get away with it.

Hey, I play music with swearing all the time in the backyard or in the car blaring out loud! No one seems to care!  ;D

I remember when there were certain songs were a bit "riskque" because they contained the words "hell" and "darn" in them. I remember wanting to sing them but didn't dare because of that. My mother told me that if it was in a song, it was ok. (She was a singer herself so she understood that dilemma.) But now, I really think they abuse that "dreaded F word." Personally, I think it is because the people who use it so often have such limited vocabulary and don't know any other adjatives.

I not as offended by that word used in itself. I draw the line when "mother" is inserted in front.

If it makes you all feel any better, those words are still a big no-no in these forums!  :D :)

I am not a fan of the word.  I really don't think it belongs in music.  But then again there are a lot of lyrics that I find totally offensive.

I was just thinking what if Barry White had cursed in his music? I guess nobody would even buy his albums! His sweet, soul music is tremendous.I would buy it if he had cursed.I wouldn't care!

Adding to this:

I went to visit my sister today to do some Christmas shopping, and she made me and my daughter listen to Eminem.  I am far from a prude, but I just thought it was ridiculous.  I mean how many times can you say that word and still think it is cool.  I apologize to those who like him, but I think that man is disgusting.  Luckily my daughter doesn't like naughty words and gets on my case if I say one.  I just told her that it is impolite for young ladies to imitate that.

I also will say that I don't understand why they cut the words out of some songs....like "Hash" in the song Hashpipe by Weezer....yet Eric Clapton repeats "Cocaine" in his song?

IIRC, Cocaine (the song, that is) was banned over here until someone pointed out that it's essentially an anti-cocaine song.

P.S. If you're on Kazaa, look for a ˝MB MP3 "Uses of the word f***" - it's hilarious.

"Cocaine" was written by JJ Cale.  Clapton just sings it.

The one I catch myself (usually just in time):
"Oh, f**crying out loud"

I even put that in one of my songs (not a parody): "I'm getting stuck|I'm out of luck|Oh fu-crying out loud" ;-)

Phil
PS Don't the film expurgators use "melon farmer"?

most of the ppl who use th the f word in thier lyrics are telling a story bout thier back ground i.e Eminem bout his mum, KoRn bout the lead singer being raped when he was a kid!
but some bands do it to get thier message across i.e Nickelbacks Never again, Puddle of Mudds she hates me!
but also i think that the songs are more popular because they have swearing, and in some occasions it makes the song sound better like in she hates me and With out me! and i know that kids (as im one myself) like them because they annoy thier parents.

Do you know Billy Connolly's "Four Letter Word"?  A parody to "Four Legged Friend", it goes something like this:

There was a young man from the BBC
His name was Ken Tynan and I'm sure you'll agree
He dropped a real clanger, that night when we heard
Him using a one, two three four-letter word

A four letter word, a four letter word
To ban it would be a shame
It's honest, it's earthy, it ought to be heard
That wonderful one, two three four-letter word

It's bandied around by the kids for a lark
It's put into practice as soon as it's dark
It's done every night by the rich and the poor
To do it is worse than to say it, I'm sure

It shouldn't be said in polite company
When aged old ladies are sipping their tea
But if those ladies' pasts were revealed, sure as hell
They've not only said it, they've done it as well
