Subject: Popstars - The Rivals (UK viewers)

Written By: Criz on 12/16/02 at 01:11 p.m.

So, the two singles are out this week. And they both want the Xmas number one. Which song do you prefer?

I have to say I like the girl's song a lot better - but I think that Danieal from the boy band is the most talented in the entire competition.

Even so I hope none of them go to number one! I just think it would be so much better if ANY other song, maybe 'Sk8r Boi' as that is also out today? It would just be fantastic if neither group made the top spot beacuse the producers, the bands themselves and Pete Waterman & Louis Walsh appear to be 'certain' that one of the groups will definitly make it.

Opinions anyone?

Until I realised that the One True Voice song was a cover version, I thought it was really good... now I just think it is a good version of a song they happen to have been given. I quite like Girls Aloud's song, since it IS original, and it IS fresh and ambitious. I vote for the guys to go in at the top, though I'd rather it'd be the girls.

I actually thought that at first - that the boys would get it. But I found out that Radio 1 seem to be backing the Girls Aloud song more - it's on a higher playlist than the boys song. Maybe that will help them :]

I think they should both be locked up in a dark room - and then the key should be disposed of asap >:(

i hate those sort of programs! i think that its an insult to artists who spend years of thier life to try and do well, then along comes the people from those type of shows and its hard for the other artists to get a chance! and now people are being compared to the poeple in those type of shows, like my m8 is trying to bre a solo snger, and he is always getting his looks compared to G G G G Gareth Gates!
and that sort of thing isnt happening in pop music now! Guys in rock music are now being picked on because they have long hair not spiked hair like Gareth has!
and also look what happened to hearsay!

I believe the conecpt of these programs offers promotion and exposure for many talented people. However, I dislike how they appear to be 'milking' the popularity of the 1st series of 'Popstars' with 'Pop Idol', 'Popstars - The Rivals' and 'Fame Academy'. Ok, the conecpt works - but don't bombard the public with loads of different programs producing artists who have just been created 'on-screen'. Not only will it backfire for the producers, but for the singers who genuinly want careers.

Even so, I also hate the fact that there is so much pressure and emotion in the show. These poor people have to wait on edge for weeks until they know whether they will be chosen. You could argue that its their choice, or you could argue that the tears aren't real. I think there's too much pressure involved - but then again, I guess that's what makes the show. Plus I guess the rivalry between the judges helped to boost ratings :]

Saying all that, I do like watching such shows. Yes they're interesting. And I have a great love of music, so I like to see artists putting their own 'style' into famous songs. You can get easily hooked into the whole thing.

So you realise he has a stammer then, eh? And poke fun at it? I should be yelling at you for it, but I'm too tired.

Quoting:
he is always getting his looks compared to G G G G Gareth Gates!

I think these programs are really cool, and yes, I have watched all of them. I didn't catch the beginning of Fame Academy, but caught the end, and was glad that David Sneddon won! I love that song. Both me and my then current girlfriend voted for Gareth once each... I'll continue my thoughts later. I'm gettin' tired...

Just to add my ha'pence worth: I think it's a great shame that they had to include the "vote them out" bit of the formulaic show to Fame Academy.  I think it would have worked better without the ten green bottles effect (and why do they insist on such young and immature participants?  A little bit of gravitas couldn't hurt)

Frankly, I don't really care who won (though I will admit to being glad that Sinead didn't), I just hope that the whole genre fades into the obscurity it so richly deserves.
