No New Dumbledore?
Could effects technology bring Richard Harris back as Albus Dumbledore? Read the latest rumor...

December 13, 2002 - Since the passing of Richard Harris casting rumors have abounded about who might replace the late actor in the role of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series.  Names like Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee have all had their turn on the rumor mill.  But the latest rumored name may come as a surprise to many... Richard Harris.

How could this be?  Faithful readers will remember that when Harris first fell ill, there was a rumor that he might be replaced by his stand-in, Harry Robinson.  The Sun extrapolates on that early rumor saying that Potter filmmakers are experimenting with special effects technology that may be used to map Harris' face on to Robinson in the next film.  A source told the paper, "Many hours of footage are currently being scanned to see if the process is viable for the film."

When asked about the possibility in August, Robinson (supposedly the "spitting image of Harris") said, "I'd love the role but I can't talk about it."

The same facial mapping technology has been used on films like Star Wars: Episode I and Blue Crush, but never for such a prominent speaking role.

Thanks to Dark Horizons for the heads-up.

How about Lawrence of Arabia? :)

The family of late Irish actor Richard Harris are urging the makers of Harry Potter to pass the part of Professor Dumbledore to his drinking friend Peter O'Toole. The hell-raising actor, who died of cancer last October, played the benevolent headmaster of Hogwart's School For Witchcraft And Wizardry in the first two adaptations of J.K. Rowling's children's novels. Harris' brother Noel says, "Dicky (Richard) made the role his own. He will be a hard act to follow. Peter was a great, great friend of Dicky's for most of his life. And he has similar qualities on screen. Our family would be delighted if he was offered the part." Although Harris never named his preferred successor of the role Noel says, "Of course he would have been happy to see it go to Peter. I just hope he is offered it and then it will be a decision for him to make." Harris, known for his hell-raising antics as well as his acting, was said to have loved playing the role of the sagely old wizard.
