Subject: Driving cross country......

Written By: Vampira on 12/29/02 at 08:17 p.m.

I didn't know where to post this! HA! I'm driving cross country in late February by myself cause I am moving to Silver Spring Maryland. Has anybody here driven cross country by themselves? I'm curious to know what people experienced. I am putting a new stereo system in my car so I don't get bored!LOl! ;D

If you are driving by yourself they are enough nuts on the road to keep you focused on just driving. If you are in Maryland on I-95 keep your eye's on the road. I hardly even listen to the radio when I drive(its just background noise.) Living in new Jersey you keep your eyes on the road every second.

I have driven across country, but there were only a couple of times I was alone.  The worst part of your trip is going to be the "breadbasket".  Miles and miles of flat land to feast your eyes on.

Here is how I plan to get there:
1. Take 1/101 down the Oregon/California coast until I hit SF.
2. Take highway 99 in california.
3. Then take highway40 across the states cause that is more in the south and I won't encounter as much snow that way.
I have driven form SF to Portland several times by myself but never a trip this long! I am going to give myself ten days in case the weather gets bad. I have to have music to sing along with or I will go insane! :D

Sounds exciting.  I drove from Virginia to California, with a brief hiatus in So. Illinois.
I experienced extreme boredom through much of the journey.  I never stopped to smell the roses but was pushing it and I remember my neck and lower back aching quite a bit as a result.
The most boring and bleak landscape I encountered on my trip was through Oklahoma, Texas panhandle and the South west (I-40, I believe.)  I remember I-70 being a more beautiful and less monotonous drive, IMO.
Cruise control also helped, something I don't have now.
Hmm, not having a map displayed in front of me at the moment, you'd probably hit I-64 somewhere along your journey, perhaps in Missouri, and that, Vampira, is a piece-o'-cake.

Highway 5 in California is sooooooo boring. if I didn't have the stereo blasting when I drove that freeway I would have fallen asleep!Ha! I am getting really excited about the trip! I am going to collect shot glasses from every state I drive through and I plan on stopping at some weird roadside places. I wanna buy a camera so I can take photos on the way. ;D

Get your car serviced before you go, oil changed and all fluids checked, tire pressure too.  When gassing wipe down your headlights along with winsheild for better driving at night.  Don't do the "pep" or caffien pills, those will make you shaky and nervous.  Take as much time as you can to get across, if you don't have to rush it all the better.  Bring lots of CDs or learn to accept country western and gospel music, ( I haven't been able to do that myself)  No hitchikers (is that even necessary to say nowdays?)  If you got food to bring, take it along with bottled water.  Coffee and soda act as a diuretic (Make you go potty more) so avoid if you can.
Have a good trip!

Hey, an early welcome to the neighborhood.  I live 30 minutes away from Silver Spring.  Of course, make that 1 to 2 hours during rush "hour".

Cool! When I was looking for rooms for rent I couldn't decide between Virginia and Maryland.States over there are way smaller than the ones out here. That is going to take some getting used to!! ;D

Ouch

My longest drive was about 12 hours.  That passed through 5 countries (UK, France, Netherlands, Belgium & Germany)
I don't envy you though ;)

Europe is so small compared to the states! It took me about 9 house to drive from San Francisco to Portland, and the states are right next to one another.

Strange stuff!
There are some Americans (West coast) who live further from their nation's capital than I do (not to mention Alaska and Hawaii) - (except that I can't drive there)
Isn't the world a wonderous place?

<modified>
Apparently, the longest distance I can drive, without leaving my country (by boat/plane) is approx 1000 miles

It kind of sucks living on the west coast cause you have to fly to get to places. It's a pain.......

Driving from our resident Maryland to visit the Grand Canyon in Arizona, especially for an 11 year old kid in 1976, was very hard on the buttocks. We had to say at a friend's house in Indiana for a couple of days before we could continue westward.

But... why would anyone want to leave Southern California? 8) Seeing some of the other states east of us, it's like looking at a third-world nation :P

Virginia and Maryland are really pretty. I went there two months ago and I got to see all of the leaves change colours.

Don't listen to those west coast chuckleheads.  The midwest is God's country  ;D  (Honk and wave when you hit St. Paul http://www.clicksmilie.de/sammlung/cool/cool018.gif)

Beware of what Screwball54 said. In the midwest/breadbasket of the country, there is nothing but endless flatland. You shoot something to the horizon and come back the next day and you can still see it going to the horizon :) :D ;D End Quote

Two year ago coming back to CA from my brother's house in Topeka, we decided to take a secondary route across Kansas instead of going back down to the 40.

Flat? Yes! But boring? No! There was something endlessly fascinating about the huge expanse. Little tiny farming towns with one main street and every one had a giant grain elevator. You could see them coming for 100 miles... :D I was totally entralled by the vastness. You can touch your soul out there. I want to go back.... :)

I like driving through the deserts. It's so beautiful there at night. :)

You are probably not going through West Virginia, I presume.  The longest trip I ever took was to visit my uncle who lives in Utah in 1977.  On the way back, we took in Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore.  I would suggest not visiting Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore this time of year, though.

Ah...I drove from CA to NC when I went to Duke for graduate school...then I drove back.  Two days straight.  Of course I had family with me so it wasn't so bad.

As for CA-99 vs. I-5, it doesn't really matter, both of them smell like sh*t.

Back before the 9-11 thing my wife went to visit her folks in Farmville, VA. Then the big 9-11 thing happened and she couldn't get a flight back. So I ended up driving from SLC, Utah to Farmville to get her.
It took me 38 hours and a lot of coffee. I was lucky in that I drove through eastern Colorado and Kansas at night. I didn't get bored because there was heavy cloud cover and every few seconds the entire sky would light up with lightning strikes. It was cool.
The longest I had ever driven before non-stop was 24 hours from SLC to Oklahoma City. That was back in the 55mph days. You could probably do it in 20 hours nowdays.
For me I take lots of music and munchies. And stop every couple of hours to top off your tank and walk around, go potty and splash some cold water on your face.

Dang, Rice!  That's a long way.  Should've driven a couple more hours down I-40 east to the coast!

I agree with you about I-5...boring drive also (from SF to LA)...except when you get right outside the San Fernando Valley and pray that your car doesn't overheat (turn off that A/C through the Aquaduct!)

My next cross country trip will be from RDU to PHX...whenever I get around to looking for and landing a job out there.
