Subject: Firefly

Has anyone seen Firefly by Joss Weedon (Fox)?
What do you think?

Apparently this series isn't doing well in the US (it hasn't yet been broadcast in the UK but some of us have the internet...)

For anyone who hasn't seen it, Firefly is effectively a group of confederate soldiers/Union exiles making their way in a post US civil war world (it's actually set in the future and they have a spaceship)
I reckon it's great and it's a real pity it is unlikely to get another series
What do you think?

Sadly... FOX has NOT ordered any more episodes and it IS cancelled.  The show was only getting an average 3 share in major & secondary markets. UPN has already passed on the opportunity to pick it up, and the producers are said to be looking at Canadian networks at this time.

It was a good show, and I hope another network can continue it.  I Can't believe the last episode has already aired here in the US. I guess I will never find out what is going to happen.

Actually UPN is not going to decide until sometime after January 6th.

I didn't like that show the first five minutes of the show. Now I hope Joss can concentrate on getting "Buffy" out of its Apocalyptic morass.

I like it.

I loved it.  I hope someone else picks it up.

But I don't see how you got US Civil war in the future from it?

Earth has been "used up".  Humans have terraformed and colonized other planets.  The government of Old Earth decided that all the colony worlds had to live under their rule, like it or not.  Unfortunately, what works for a high-technology, heavily populated world does not work for a very rural, low-technology, sparsely populated world.

Several of the colony worlds fought a war for independance. They lost.

A better analogy would be the American Revolution (independance from Great Britain) or any other former colony fighting for independance from the colonial power.

It might work on the Sci-Fi channel, but they have a bad habit of cancelling their most popular shows too. :(

The war in the show is often refered to as the "Civil war" on the fansites

I loved Firefly; thought it offered a lot to sci-fi TV that Trek and assorted clones never did (big contraversial statement there, just an opinion). Sincerely hoping Joss gets his chance in hell and goes on to make more of them.

Maybe it's just over my head then. It'll probably have a cult following like Joss' other shows. But IMHO, it doesn't deserve it. :(
