Subject: Super Bowl XXXVII

I have dedicated this thread exclusively to the Big Game on January 26, 2003. Keep posting on the other pro-football thread until then, or until Hairspray locks up that thread if ever.

Good to see the Bucs finally made it.  I wonder if this proves, all else being equal, a gung-ho coach like Gruden is better than a laid-back Dungy type?

If Gruden were "gung-ho" he would've had the Raiders try to make a play in the last 1:30 of last year's Snow Bowl in regulation instead of kneeling it down :P

I'm going to go with the Bucs regardless of who they play in the Super Bowl.  I'd love to see a Bucs-Raiders Super Bowl.  I have some relatives who live in Lakeland, which is 33 miles east of Tampa, so I would have to go with the Bucs.

Someone convinced the Buccaneers they were capable of winning in cold weather.  I meant emotionally gung-ho.  Sometimes a coach gets skittish in-game.

A fair prediction, given Tampa Bay's defense and Oakland's penchant for committing stupid penalties.  However, I think it will be much closer than that.

33-30.  Whoever wins will have 33, I honestly don't know who though.

As I said, Bucs over Raiders.  No score.  Although I know that Raiders WR Jerry Porter played his college ball for the West Virginia Mountaineers, I like the Bucs.  Besides, I have relatives in Lakeland, FL, 33 miles from Tampa.  So there.

Corrected! I left out the 2 by mistake. :-[
BTW, I pick the Raiders to win next Sunday because they will be looking for revenge against Jon Gruden for leaving Oakland. But it wasn't his fault, was it?
Final score:
Oakland: 31, Tampa Bay 13.

No.  Al Davis is an idiot.  But Bill Callahan is a good coach.  And many kudos to Gruden for making the Super Bowl.

Raiders over the Bucs.   Win or lose it's going to be a great game between two deserving teams - no questionable calls that helped either team get in.

Well it would have been nice if the Falcons had made it, but got to stick up for the division so i am going for the Bucs to win next sunday which i think they will cause as the saying goes "defense wins championships" and they have the best in the league.  I know the Raiders have the best offense but i can't see them moving the ball as much against the Bucs.

Subject: Re: Super Bowl XXXVII

It'll be tough, but not impossible. My reasoning being that the Raiders have been together for so long. (Of course it didn't help the Eagles.) Plus they have Rice and Romanowski, who have never been on a losing Super Bowl, except for that one Farve guy, and Romo's team got revenge a year later.

That is true and Rice and Romanowski have the experience but at the same time they are also not as young as they used to be.  I think Gannon has to have a great game for the Raiders to win and with the year he has had this year he can definitly do it.  But you also have to ask since this is the first Super Bowl he has played in will nerves get to him and cause him to get to a slow start cause if they fall behind the Bucs i dont think they would be able to come back.  It will be a good game though i cant' wait.

Before we do that, let's talk about the $45 million the Raiders are going to be over the cap next season.  I mean, can they afford to not cut Rice, and Brown, and Gannon, and who knows how many others?

A couple of years ago the Vikings were about $19 million over the cap and they had to cut Pro-Bowlers John Randle and Todd Steussie.

You're right.  This is essentially their last shot for a long time, but I like how Jerry Porter and the multi-running back scheme is working.  I think given a few years they can dominate again.  They just have to find another Gannon because he's getting a bit oldish.

Even though the team with the best defense is 25-12 and the team with the best offense is 18-18, I am picking the Raiders to win because they have a stingy defense themselves and the Bucs' offense still doesn't score at will the way Callahan's team. Still, if I had my druthers, Tony Dungy would be in the Super Bowl instead of Gruden.  My questions would be "Would Dungy had gotten this far if he stayed with the Bucs? And could he do the same thing that Gruden's done with Tampa Bay this year?" I'm afraid the answer would be no in both cases. :-/

Since no one set up a marquee, here I go:

Super Bowl XXXVII

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48,
Oakland Raiders 21

Next year's Super Bowl is a good one, I hope :)

Okay, here's MY opinion of this year's dance....there was a pretty good football game played and it got lost amongst all the crap they put on and claimed was entertainment...what really drove me nuts was the fact that only 2..yes TWO of the acts performing actually had the b@lls to sing LIVE!! All the rest lipsynched!! Come on...they're supposed to be freakin' professionals and they freakin' lipsynch!! Now, I know all about the arguments saying that it's a soundman's nightmare and logistically it's near frickin' impossible to have a good sound when performing for 80,000 people in a football stadium....so then why do it??

The worst part? Celine Dion. Now she's a good Canadian kid but wtf was she doing singing...ahem...lipsyniching God Bless America? She's CANADIAN!! But the worst part of that whole shenanigan was her pre-performance interview when they asked her if she was nervous performing at SuperBowl and she said YES!! Hello!! You're f***ing lipsynching!!!

The Dixie Chicks lipsynched the National Anthem. Disgraceful. Utterly disgraceful. Sure, it was a beautiful version...but it was TAPED!!! You'll NEVER see that at a hockey game. EVER!

Now you know I'm a HUGE Bon Jovi fan...but wtf was the point of having them play before the trophy?? Crap!! Everyone had been waiting almost 7 hours at that point to see the VLTrophy awarded..but noooooooo...let's hear a song or two first! At least they sang live......kudo's to them and the very cool duet of Sting and Gwen Stefani....the only other one's to sing live.....

The game itself was fairly good from my point of view. Coulda been the hugest upset in history....but wasn't....those last 2 interceptions totally blew Oakland out of reach...I thought the game had everything you'd expect from a SuperBowl....

I can't comment on the commercials b/c we don't get them in Canada....we get a Canadian feed of the game...with lame-@$$ Canadian commercials....I did see the Osbourne's one the night before and it made me LMAO....

Anyway, that's MHO on SB XXXVII.....sorry for the rant...but thanks for letting me get it off my chest....

I disagree. Celine wasn't even the worst Canadian 'talent' at the game. That distinction belongs to the s!uttily dressed country star Shania Twain. She was obviously lips-syncing, and very badly too. Anyone who would want to spend the rest of her life with the butt-ugly Mutt Lange must like other men to stare at her. ::)
