Subject: When will the 2000's define themselves?

Written By: mm on 01/16/03 at 01:59 p.m.

Just curious, you know by 93 we had Nirvana, grunge fashion, friends(well, by 94 at least), seinfeld, simpsons, great nickelodeon programming, mtv was still cool, the internet was just beginning to creep into the mainstream. That era was defining itself, what are the 2000's??

I hope it's not the terrorism, bush, war, crappy economy decade :P

The 00s have something for everybody. Pop lovers, rock lovers, pseudo-punk loving kids (whatever keeps them happy...), we retrospective folk, intense happinesses, intense sadnesses... and so on.

Its looking that way now, I sure hope that it changes for the better soon.  The last 2 years have sure been lousy for almost everyone.

I think 9/11 was a defining moment, when the US discovered it wasn't immune from terrorism and has to keep it's guard up.
I don't think that security will be the only thing defining this decade, thank god, but will be a large one.  What I'm hoping to happen is that the public soons tires of sex-pop bands, "reality" tv, and physical self abuse for comedy (Jackass) and we enter a better age of entertainment.

That's kind of hard to say. So far, there are lots of things that could define this decade. Unfortunately, most of the things aren't very good.  Other than this...no comment.  :)

This topic always comes up.

Sticking strictly to pop culture, (not really including politics or world events) there is very little different in 2003 from the late 90s.  It's weird that it's still like this.  You're right, by 1993, heck 1992, the 90s had clearly arrived.  The 80s were the same way, it had defined itself by 1982.

For whatever reason, the 00s are just super slow in creating a pop cultural identity.  Most of the stuff around now is late 90s, and it still has a late 90s atmosphere.  I have no idea when it will change.  There may have been some left over late 80s fashions and hairstyles around in the very early 90s, but the 80s as a decade were over.  The 80s just weren't cool in the early 90s.

We're still in the late 90s....

I have no explanation for this phenomenon.

Money.  Nostalgia didn't kick-in until 80's high school grads started getting jobs, married, responsibilities, etc.  Before that happened I, for one, never spoke of decade specific phenomenon or pop culture, indeed, I made some attemt to distance myself from it.  As you said, "just wasn't cool".
I'll admit that some long forgotten music, toys, movies, fads, ad nauseum from the 80's mentioned in these forums still cause me to blush ever-so-slightly.
