Subject: Buckle Up...It's The Law..But Not On School Buses?

Written By: RockandRollFan on 01/18/03 at 09:42 a.m.

Forgive me as this may sound crazy but, WHY aren't school buses equipped with seat-belts http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons/06.gif

Good question. I remember as a kid riding on the school bus, I lost my front tooth (it was loose anyway) when the bus hit a bump and I went flying.

I hope it was only a baby tooth, and that it didn't hurt  :-/

Yeah, it was a baby tooth but it still hurt. I remember I was wearing a pink dress and I had red blood all down the front and I was crying up a storm (I was about 7 at the time). It happened just around the corner from my house so I was in my mother's arms before I could stop bleeding.

I have no idea, but as crazy as my bus is, I wish they did.   >:(

I asked myself the same thing and this is what the National Highway Traffic Safety Admin. has to say. (In other words, the incidence of severe injury in bus accidents is just too low to warrant the expense of redesigning the buses to be equipped with appropriate restraints. )http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/injury/buses/pub/seatbelt.hmp.html

You think that is bad, come to Utah.  We have a secondary seat belt law...of course if you have too many kids for seatbelts you are exempt from the seat belt law.  The legislature has a bill to make it the law for everyone, but people here are complaining.  "We wouldn't be able to go anywhere together...how would we drive our family of 13 (I kid you not) to church".  Here's an idea...get another car.  If you can't afford another car then you have no business having 10 dang kids. >:(

Well I don't think anyone should be forced to wear safety belts. It should be up to the car owner to decide whether he or she wants commit suicide while driving or not. ::)
Just joking, but a lot of my fellow Hoosiers feel the same way.

Nope. They couldn't find it. I was so worried that the Tooth Fairy wouldn't leave me anything because it wasn't under my pillow. My mother assured me that she would find it. To my surprise, she did find it and left me something under my pillow. It just goes to show you what the Tooth Fairy can do.  ;D

You're right, you know!  That's a good question. It really makes me think, people are always making sure their kids are safe and yet no law has brought up that issue. I'ts common sense.

Speaking of seat belts, here in the Wa. State we have the highest seat belt wearing population in the country, I don't recall the number but I think some other liberal state in New England was close.  When the mandatory seat belt law was enacted in the mid eighties it was under the statute that cops couldn't pull you over for not having one on, only site you if they pulled over for something else.  This winter the laws were changed to address the non-problem in seat belt use and not only was the law changed where they could pull someone over for not wearing it but also the the State Patrol was gonna have a big crack down on it and go looking for it.  It was called "Click it, or Ticket" and they had a big media campaign for it.  Are we stupid, or what?
Thanks Dagwood for that news from Utah, maybe it's a Morman conspiracy to keep there population in check?  Have to procreate but lets keep the option of killing some of the kids open. ::)

I'll tell you why:  Kids are little monsters.  They're less likely to injure themselves in an accident than they are to injure someone else swinging a seat belt buckle around.

I think it makes no sense to not have seat belts on school buses, no matter what the survey findings are.  Too me it's just common sense!

There is a big uproar over this one.  Most of the people fighting for the law are coming up with interesting ways to decide who doesn't get the seatbelt.  I think that if these people were in an accident and one of their children died because there weren't enough seatbelts, their opinion on the matter would change.

Common sense being the key words here.  Not many people who are supposed to be in charge have common sense.

That always annoyed me. Most bus drivers in my area drive 70-80 MPH (no joke), so we could get into an accident without them!  A friend who is a bus driver told me that it's IN CASE THERE'S AN ACCIDENT that they don't have any. But I still don't get it. It's true that it would be awfully hard to unbuckle 50 or so kids if there was an accident, but there's more chance of having an accident and someone dying WITHOUT a seat belt. Like I said, that always annoyed me.
