Subject: Music nowadays

Written By: mm on 01/26/03 at 12:35 a.m.

Are we in another one of those "in between" periods? Looks like Rap/TeenyBob/NuMetals reign of terror is coming to an end....so what's next?

I'm starting to like what I hear on the radio, garage grunge is good though it will not be the next big thing. K-Rock in nyc is playing great stuff like Chochise from Audioslave, Fine Again from Seether , My December from Linkin Park (though I hate that band I love that song. Can't Stop from the RHCP, Times like these and All My Life from the Foo Fighters. Go With the Flow by QOTSA.

These are all great rock songs, I'd say music is on the upswing again.

It's somthing I'm still getting use to,lol! I mean, music these days is so different than it was in the 90s, and I sort of got use to certain genres and all. I think modern music is just a combination of past music, but with a little edge to it.

I wish there was a station in my area playing alternative/modern rock!  The only music I can stand listening to anymore is country, but I hate what passes for popular music these days!

I think so, cause groups like the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC and Spears are on there way out or atleast it looks that way.  And just the rock music is starting to take over again.  Though Rap is still hanging on and probably will continue to do so but i can handle Rap a lot easier than i can those boy bands.

the boy bands do seem to be going out of style, but judging from what's popular where i live, the next big thing's avril lavigne and anyone who copies her. >.<;;

however, i actually found a radio station that i like...the only problem is that i'm too far north of the station to be able to receive it in my house.  >:( drat.

Yeah i forgot about Avril but alteast in my opinion she has more talent than Spears or Christina does and she doesnt dress all trashy like the others either, she actually wears clothes.

Avril seems a tad more legit an likeable, she'll never become a pop queen like Spears was from 1998 to early 2002, before Britney burned out. we got sick of her and she had a nervous breakdown.

I am listening to all of these. I really like Seether. Getting away from programmed barbie girls and prepackaged rock? From your lips to Bog's ears. ;D

;D Looks like garage rock like The Hives, The Strokes, Foo Fighters, QOTSA, Seether, Chevelle, The Datsuns, Pacifier... etc etc is the new look!!! Which is great, coz it has an original sound... unlike many bands from the 1998-2002 era  :-/

Also i see a huge increase in punk bands like unwritten law, dropkick murphys etc.

I also see this year as the uprise for bands from Australia and New Zealand  ;D

If "garage rock" and punk becomes more popular and NuMetal, Rap, TeenPop etc become less popular... i think we will see an increase in CD sales... its this crap era in music that has made the Music Industry suffer <--- its their own fault  :P

I know this is slighlty off topic... but i had to put it in sumwhere

As Bob Seeger once said, "Today's music ain't got the same soul. Just give me that old time rock-n-roll."

Hell yes, Bob Seger the visionary.  I wish more people would take his advice.

I was reading Newsweek and they had an ariticle on new stuff coming out and the decline of the pop bands.  The author made an excellant statement that a big problem with the record companies are that they dont produce much for people over 30, which is over 1/2 the CD buying community.

I had to go swimming all the way to page 3 to find this thread!

I have two new loves: Wilco and The Vines. Probably old news to some of you.... can anyone point an old lady to more groups like this? thanks!

I disagree.  Nu-metal was nearly completely s***, but it definitely did not sound much like anything that came before it, whereas Garage Rock (while definitely a superior genre) pretty much sounds like Garage Rock throughout the ages.

If you like The Vines, I suggest you go towards Nirvana, who The Vines ripped their entire shtick from.  Other similar bands include The Hives, The Strokes, The White Stripes, etc.

As for Wilco, you might want to try The Jayhawks (another alt-country group) and Uncle Tupelo, which is where Wilco singer Jeff Tweedy got his start.

Thanks for the tips! I know about Nirvana as they are in my top ten of all time. I read an interview once where Kurt himself said he "borrowed" from the Beatles, so somehow I don't think he would mind about the Vines.. I just missed the sounds of real music, nice to see it coming back around (I'm sure these bands have been around a while, I am just not very good at finding the different stuff).  ;D

It Sucks getting old and "established" when it comes to music.  15 years ago I new all the "alternative" sounds, now I look at the top 40 chart and wonder who most of them are. :-/

I had given up for the past several years because it seemed all that was new was prepackaged pop, or other genres that I did not particularly care for. But an old friend from college has been pointing me here and there....and I am finding sounds that I like. Smalltown living has it's advantages...but let's just put it this way all the locals say "Round here we have two kinds of music. Country and western." LOL

That's good that you still have a music contact, I still listen to current music but most of the names aren't worth buying much less remeberging their names.  I hear some good new stuff on occasion but I don't have my ear to the "underground" anymore.
