Subject: Songs About Racism

Written By: Criz on 01/27/03 at 11:12 a.m.

I was thinking this earlier beacuse I'm researching the topic at the moment. You get tonnes of songs about negative issues such as war and politics (usually negative!). There seem to be very few songs about prejudices, especially racism. Or maybe there are and I just can't think of them! Are there any songs from say, the last 30 years or so that you can think of?

Edited To Add: Ooh, I just thought of one! 7 Seconds by Nenah Cherry and Youssou N'Dour from 1994. Now I'm positive I'll find more!

"Killing An Arab" by The Cure might be misconstrued as racist.

"Cop Killer" by Ice T (Body Count) addresses the hatred towards poilce brutality against minorities (in violent speech). Definitely track down songs from this album.

Death In June and Der Blutarsch are inspired by right-wing ideology. I've not heard anything racial though...

You might also want to try reading into the Oi! Punk subculture. Mind you, 99% of it IS NOT racist, but the 1% get all the attention because they're a bunch of silly Nazis saluting "seek help" at punk shows.

MTV once did a "hate rock" special and talked about right-wing wrock bands like Radikal, RaHoWa, (Racial Holy War) and other trash like that. These bands hit pay-dirt when it comes to racism in music. I wouldn't pay to listen to them, but if it's available to download - then, by all means, subvert their cause by ripping them off!

Then, there's the few songs here and there with the "n" word thrown in for effect sung by Goth and Punk bands. Try "Romeo's Distress" by Christian Death and "The KKK Took My Baby Away" by The Ramones. Good tunes!

Depeche Mode has a song that mentions racism in a general sense, as part of the general problem of hatred.

The song is called "People Are People" and the line I'm thinking of goes:

"So we're different colors and we're different creeds, and different people have different needs.

It's obvious you hate me, though I've done nothing wrong.  I've never even met you so what could I have done? "

Funny you should mention that. I just downloaded the MP3 of "Cop Killer" a few days ago.

"Black Boys On Mopeds"-Sinead O'Connor (Might be accusing then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of racism, but is generally a lambasting of Thatcher's conservative policies)

"Wake Up" -Rage Against The Machines (repeating a popular belief that the US government sends blacks to the frontlines to be sacrificed in wars.)

"Original Sin"-INXS, "Brother Louie"-Stories (Obviously about interracial dating)

If any rock song deserved to be panned for its racial (and sexual) content, it is "Brown Sugar" by the Stones. But if you listen closer, you might find out that it is not condoning slavery or rape, but condemning the ignorance of whites toward the black race. IMHO anyway.

Free Your Mind-En Vogue. Lyrics go something like this: Free Your Mind and the rest will follow, be color blind don't be so shallow. Another Song about racism is I Believe by Blessid Union Of Souls: One of the lines goes: I wish he(girlfriends's father) would just see me as a person and not just a black man(interracial dating song.)

One of Billie Holiday's signature songs was "Strange Fruit," about southern lynchings.  She performed it during the 1950s.

Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
Blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
The scent of magnolia sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
for the rain to gather
for the wind to suck
for the sun to rot
for the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop

Himey Town by The hypocrite racist Jesse give me money Jackson. Racism  is a multi lane highway. But the liberals would much rather have you think that only Whitey is racist.
Bunch of hyporcites.

Chumbawumba had a song called 'Enough is Enough' on their Anarchy album, courted a bit of contraversy for it's militant stance (Give the fascist man a gunshot!)

There was also a track called Homophobia, which told the story of a young gay man who was kicked to death in the street.
