Subject: AOL is horrible!

Written By: John_Seminal on 02/03/03 at 11:52 p.m.

If you are thinking about getting AOL, stay away from them!

I can not believe how slow the connection is and how bad the service is. I get around 2-3 k/second avarage from AOL. My cousin just got Earthlink and he is getting 6-8 k/second avarage. That may not sound like much, but with a 180k page (like 5 small 30k graphics and the rest text), the difference is a long wait with AOL. And the dial-up numbers for AOL suck. About 15% of the time they are busy, and another 40% of the time it hangs while logging in. I have a p4 system, and I know the problem is on their end.

To make matters worse, AOL decided they have a right to scan my hard drive and instal software wherever they want. A messege box poped up saying "New Features Being Added", but when I clicked the "X" button to close the program, it would not close!! AOL does this kind of stuff with their programs like the "Welcome Screen". You can not close it, only minimize it.

And after about the 15th time I logged in, the "Database" which initilized when you boot AOL crashed, and I could not logg in. I called and was placed on hold for 40 minuites to be told by a person: "This is sales, let me transfer you to tech help". And then I got a recording which said "we are unable to process your call at this time, please try again later" and they hung up.

If you are looking for an internet provider, do yourself a favor and stay away from these bloodsuckers.  >:(

Your are right, AOL is the worst.  I had them for a very short while, didn't appreciated the pop-ups and very busy starting screen.  Earthlink is okay but if you have a problem be prepared to wait on hold for a long time.  I called them a couple of weeks ago and it was 20 minutes and I just read that they are closing 3 of their call in centers, that means only worse.  Go with cable or DSL if you can, it's worth it.  I have ATT broadband now and no problems yet, has a dial-up backup if there is a problem with cable, and I have not recieved any spam to my e-mail.

I never did understand what all the hype about AOL was for.

Over the last few years, I've heard far more users complain about it than praise it.

...not to mention the inflated cost of AOL.  How much is it nowadays to have AOL?

I had AOL for the free month when I first got my computer, then I wised up and switched.  Now I have Networld.  It is fairly inexpensive.  I pay $14.95 for unlimited dial up per month.  If you pay by the year it is something like $99.  I don't have as many problems as I had with AT&T.

What ?  6 replies and no-one has dared to venture that AOL stands for "A$$holes on line" ?

(Not the users, the company)

You people are slipping !  ;D

Never had it, never wanted it.  The hubby is a computer-guy and when we first got "connected" to the internet, wouldn't even let me think of aol.  We went through a local company, but have recently switched to cable.  It's alot more expensive, but hubby sometimes works from home and needed the bandwidth (or something like that).  It's also nice because we can have as many people online as we want and there is no slowdown.  My mom has aol (keeps switching names, etc with the free disks) and the day she registered, she had spam!  She hadn't even given ME her email and she was already getting crap!

ROFL LMAO!!! Almost on Line. That describes my problem 100% What I do not understand is, dosen't AOL realize they will lose customers as other competitors offer lower prices, or people decide to get DSL or Cable Modems? The only thing to get people to stick with AOL would be excellent servcie and a product which works without fustrating the user. Waiting forever to start the program, then having the program hijack the computer so the user has limited ability to decide if they want to instal updates, canceling dial-up numbers so you have to look for new ones, and having super slow speeds of 2k/second when a phone line should be able to get 56k, these are all reasons to tell AOL to go to hell. Maybe the company is switching its focus to the media now that they have a TV station. Maybe the internet was just a tool to get what they wanted.

wow, after reading these posts, I know now why so many people hate AOL!

I've never considered getting AOL, in fact, I would stay away from the big national ISP's all together.  We use a local service, which is nice because if we have a problem or anything we can just walk into the office and talk to someone in person.

the problem with all the local isp's (except one) where i live is that they're all owned by the same damn people!  they're incredibly slow, as in "almost aol" slow, and the e-mail service is the screwiest thing i've ever seen.  get this - if you send something to someone with an @att.net address, there's a 90% chance they won't receive it.  i know this because i use at&t and some of my friends tried to send me stuff by the other place...aye.  it's just BAD.

it really doesn't make sense to pay $23.50 to get kicked off the internet every five minutes.  i'd have to recommend at&t for a dial-up service.  (sadly, i'm in a cable-AND-dsl-free zone.)  :(

yikes, that sounds bad.

But thats not the case with my local ISP.  I've never had a problem in over 3 years.  The email works great, the price is good($16) and the connection is good.  And like I said, you can't beat being able to just walk into the office, rather than waiting on hold on the phone for 2 hrs.

When I got my new 'puter, I was pi$$ed because I couldn't take advantage of the 6 months free AOL or MSN because I live out in the sticks and neither had a local #. Now that I've learned more about the net, and after reading this thread, I'm counting my blessings.

I cannot agree with you more.  I had AOL for two years and it was so bad, that I just stopped going online all together.  Then when I bought this computer I splurged & got Cable & it is the best!!!!!!!  Only problem is....now I CAN'T get OFFLINE!!!!!  I am on it all the time.  I think my hubby thinks I am having an online affair or something cause I am always getting on late at night after he goes to bed!  HaHa I don't think so, if he only knew that what I am really doing is reminiscing with people about the 70's & 80's!!! LOL ;D ;D

My guess is the only people who still use AOL are the "captive audience" group.  Either there is no other service available in their area, or they don't know anything else exists.  Or like my brother, they got a $600=$700 discount off a new computer if they agreed to a 2 or three year contract with AOL.  (MSN offers similar deals).

I use Allvantage.com.  They have a list of numbers for several states, so some of you may be able to use them.  I pay only $5.95 per month, and there was a one-time initial set-up fee of only $7.95.  If you sign up in the middle or near the end of the month they pro-rate your first month's fee so you only pay for what you actually use.

I don't get dumped offline any more often than I did when I was using MSN.

I get no spam at all, but then I rarely give that address out.  (I use Yahoo as a spam-catcher account.)

Well, I never could figure out why anyone would want to use AOL or any of those huge companies that charge you $25 a month.

I use lanset, which is nationwide I believe. It is only $13.00 a month if you pay quarterly, and you get a web page with a huge amount of space so you can store and link pics. Call them and see if they are available in your area. The toll free number is 1-877-6LANSET.

(And no, I don't work for the company... :D )

I worked for AOL a while back for a whole 2 months and I learned a few things. When people call in to cancel, they get sent to a special place where the representatives try to convince them to stay, one way to make them stay is to offer them free months. Well, let's just say I put my knowlegde to work for myself, wrong? I don't think so! I still have AOL today, but would like to change it. I went to read an email today and when I clicked to open it, a little box popped up and said that the email was not ready to read yet?? Maybe the AOL people are reading my messages, I don't know, I didn't have any problem reading the rest of my mail, just the one letter and it was nothing of any great importance.  >:(

what cracks me up about AOL is how in their commercials, they try to act like they are the only provider to offer things like Instant Messaging and Weather Updates, Parental Controls etc. etc.

Like the Juno commercial says, "there's only one internet, and all ISP's connect to the same internet..."  Why on earth would I pay $24/month for AOL when I can get "the same internet" via a local company(nationwide access) for $16/month, and get all the same features(instant messaging, etc. etc.) for free from MSN or whereever you choose?

It just doesn't make sense to me why anyone would choose AOL, especially nowadays after all the negative publicity.  Not to mention those annoying "start-up" discs you get in the mail every other week! >:(

Actually, years ago when they would mail them in the regular plastic CD jewel cases, I just threw out the CD and jewel case insert and saved the empty jewel cases.  Now that I can make my own CD's, I am glad I saved those empty cases. :)
