Subject: This might interest some in our midst...

Written By: American Idle on 02/19/03 at 00:37 a.m.

I was listening to this crappy cover of The Smiths's "How Soon Is Now?" by this Russian Pop sensation called t.A.T.u. This pair is a mystery to me. What exactly was the angle the corporate execs at Universal used to push this tripe on the unsuspecting masses? As if we don't have enough of Puke Pop, they unleash even more. This one was the strangest pitch of them all though. Here goes:

What we have here are a pair of real, underage teens, who happen to be lovers, and we can have them perform their songs to an audience who'll renege them, but will still buy into it! And the idea took off!

I don't know whether to consider this marketing genius at its best (it resembles those Calvin Klein commercials that got banned) or to look at this more introspectively because, despite the fact that underage sex is a big "no-no," the millions who've bought into it would like to state otherwise (including the pop idols themselves). Oh, it's going to rain fire on both continents! Hahaha.

T.a.T.u, consisting of Julia Olegovna Volkova and Elena Sergeevna Katina, 18 and 19 years old, are apparently a couple, although I do believe that that is just clever marketing. Their album, 200 Po Ustrechnoi (Driving 200 miles in the opposite lane) was released recently in Britain.

T.a.T.u, translated, is apparently a complicated issue. When read, it translates as "this girl loves that girl", but other sources will disagree.

They have been at number 1 for 3 weeks in the UK!  In magazine interviews, they profess their undying love for each other, but rumours are rife that they have boyfriends back in Russia.

I think T.a.T.u. has a VERY 80's sound.  I like them.  But I suspect they will fade from the scene soon.

If they're 18 and 19, they're not underage, at least not where I'm from.

They're 18 and 19 now, but began their stint around 2000.

Just wanting to pick up on them doing this cover. Why? Why? Why? I bet these girls have never even heard of The Smiths. The cover is sh*t. They're 'original' music also fits under that category. They market these girls as this label because it causes controversy. Take Eminem. Take Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Controversy sells records. And don't the record companys know it.

The original is sooooooooo much better. A friend of mine let me listen to their version and I think the girls' voices are much too chirpy  :P to sing such a sad song like How Soon Is Now.

The thing is, I've read articles where they've stated that they're not lesbians.  Interesting thought, though:  Is this pure exploitation or a bold blow for homosexual rights?  And why are you supposed to feel bad for watching 17-year-olds make out but watching 18-year-olds is perfectly fine?

As for their music, I've heard worse.

Why does there have to be only one option? This can be seen from all angles, really. For the execs, it is about exploiting the teen-sex market and for the homosexual culture it is about a group at the forefront of European Pop - the kind boys and girls of all ages from all creeds listen and watch attentively. We "got them," all right.

As for the age thing. A topic like that might be frowned upon on this forum, but suffice to say, this is what was meant by looking at this introspectively. Is 17 just a number? Does 18 make it suddenly right? I don't know. We cannot deny the fact that the clencher in the sales pitch IS (or was) about underage sex. The article posted went on to describe Malcolm MacLaren's Punk project and I could not site a better analogy for this. These girls are the Sex Pistols of Puke Pop. It's scary, it's interesting, it's packaged in wholesome goodness with a really naughty message ;) How much more subversive can it get? I don't think one needs to go the route of Marilyn Manson to be able to give mass audiences whiplash from the ideas portrayed.

Anyone ever read Aldous Huxley's A Brave New World? He foretold of entertainment of this sort and he also wrote about underage sex in a technologically-advanced society. Okay, I know I'm just reaching here, but still...
