Subject: Johnny Cash covers NIN song

Written By: DaChazman on 02/21/03 at 01:41 p.m.

You may have heard that Johnny Cash finally put out a new song. The song is a cover of a Nine Inch Nail song. I can't believe a man like Johnny Cash would cover a song from NIN.
Guess he liked the song :)

"Hurt."  You should see the video, though.  It's a retrospective of his life.

I like Johnny Cash but I don't think he should have to do all these covers like this to appeal to the alternative crowd.

His Soundgarden cover was incredible.

I don't think he is doing it to appeal to the alternative crowd....cause he has always appealed to them.  I think he has a great sense of humor & he says he picked those songs because likes them.  He has been known in the past to listen to alternative music and draws a huge alternative crowd to his shows.  I just think he is a very diversified man and isn't afraid to try new things!  < thats's in addition to being one of the greatest storytellers of all time!  :D

Yes! That was "Rusty Cage". What a killer that was!

What PoP said.  Johnny Cash has always pushed the envelope.  I can't think of a cooler pop culture figure.

Cash has an album full of covers of alt-rock songs. He still won't be doing songs with the dreaded f word in it.

I was blown away with the "Rusty Cage" cover, it was not a soundgarden tune when he did it, it was purely Johnny Cash.  I love Soundgarden buy I liked Johonny's version better.

I currently listening to 'The mercy seat', a Nick Cave cover!
The JC version is actually better than the original (IMO)

Those are awesome covers! It's rare of me to write that, but, besides Bryan Ferry, I think Johnny Cash added this certain newness to those songs. Plus, I believe he has the credentials to do his renditions of Rock classics after all these years in the scene.

I've never been a big NIN fan, so I have never heard the original version of "Hurt", but it would be hard to beat Cash's cover.  I may have to pick up the CD.

I never really listened to Johnny Cash songs until a few years ago.  I heard Social D cover "Ring of Fire" and liked that song so much.  Now, anytime I'm at a bar and am playing songs from the jukebox, if I see his original version in there, I'll put it on everytime.

I went to WinMx and downloaded his Soundgarden Rusy Cage cover last night, it rocks.  My wife was surprised that it was a SG cover and thought it really good too.  I've got some other covers downloaded too but haven't heard them all yet.  Johnny Cash is one of the few CW performers I can tolerate.

The Downward Spiral is in par with Pretty Hate Machine. It's NIN's subsequent albums that fell short, imo. The original version is really good and I was amazed how Johnny Cash could match it with his trademark sound. I was never much of a fan before, but after hearing these songs I'm willing to go out there and listen to more of his works.

I saw this video this morning and was very impressed. This song definitely fits the story of Johnny Cash's life. The video is a sad retrospective of his life. He has done a great job with the cover.

I'd rather hear:

Michael Bolton singing "Oops! I Did It Again"

Warrant singing "Stairway to Heaven"

Christina Aguilera singing "Stairway to Heaven"

Christina Aguilera singing the entire "Wall" album

Vanilla Ice singing "Aqualung"

Nsync singing "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"

Michael Bolton singing "Mr. Roboto"

Pat Boone singing "Rape Me"

Ted Nugent singing Britney Spears' "That's Where You Take Me"
