Subject: Alcohol sales on Sunday?

Written By: 80sRocked on 02/24/03 at 06:07 p.m.

Given the current status of individual states' budget deficits, many states, inlcuding mine, are considering allowing liquor stores, groceries, etc to sell alcohol on Sundays.

Personally, I have absolutely no problem with alcohol being sold on Sundays.  It has never made sense to me why it isn't already done up to this point.  After all, it's not illegal to drink it on Sunday, but it is illegal to sell it on Sunday?  Makes no sense to me.

It is estimated that it could genreate millions of $$$ in additional funds to the already strapped budgets of the states, so why not?

What do you all think about it?

I believe Pennsylvania just recently passed a law that allowed alcohol sales on Sundays.  These laws were put in place in some states so many years go, that evidently they were just never changed.  I live in a state that never(at least from my understanding) had a ban on Sunday alcohol sales.  It seems strange to me that some states wouldn't sell alcohol on Sunday.  Then again, I guess it's really just a matter of what you're accustomed to...

I agree.  My state, Indiana, has banned Sunday alcohol sales for as long as I can remember, and I have never understood the reasoning behind it.  Makes absolutley no sense.

You can buy a glass of beer in a restaurant on Sundays, but you can't buy a case of beer in a liquor store.

Ridiculous if you ask me.

They are called "Blue Laws" and I really don't know how they got that name. I think every state practiced them about 50 years or so (after prohabition) but in the last 20-30 years, a lot of states relaxed those laws. I know in Texas (at least it was like this about 10 years or so ago) they couldn't sell liquor before 12 noon on Sunday. Of course there are some counties in Texas that are dry and you can't buy liquor at all. Many states in the Northeast no longer have the Blue Laws and liquor stores have been opened on Sundays for decades now.

I understand not selling it before 8 AM or after 2 AM, but to stop sales on an entire day is goofy.

WA state allows grocery/convienance stores to sell wine and beer any day of the weak, but hard liquor can only be sold in state liquor stores which are closed on Sundays and also close early in the evenings.  The latest I found one was 10:00pm but most close at 7:00pm.  I find it rediculous that the state has a monopoly on hard liquor but I don't think they're going to give it up any time soon.  Each state varies, drink anytime you want in Vegas 8), good luck trying to find the single lounge at the Salt Lake City Airport. ::)

Don't you just love our little state?

I know our liquor laws will never change here...we can't buy anything but beer in convenience or grocery stores.  If you want liquor or wine etc you have to go to the state run liquor store.  If you want a drink other than beer you have to belong to a private club.  We have two counties that won't sell any alcohol on Sunday, the rest can sell them from 7:00 am until 1:00 am.  They are a little odd, but we don't have any dry counties like they do in the south.  I guess every state has their own quirks.

I KNOW just what you mean, dagwood.  I went to a state owned store a couple years back...down near Goshen...and found that a 24 oz. can of beer that costs $1.50 here in Colorado, was an outrageous $4.20!  I think the mormons are reaping the benifits :-X

WOW!  I like beer just as much as the next guy, but there's no way in...that I'd pay $4.20 for one!

Thats just outrageous.

In Mississippi you can buy beer all day long at grocery and convenience stores, but if you want the hard stuff you have to go to the liquor store. And forget about it on Sunday, unless of course you are at one of the casinos, in which case you can get it 24-7!

If you couldn't buy booze on a Sunday here, I think there would be a revolution.

Here in Verdun, Quebec, you can call the depaneur (Corner store) and have your beer or wine delivered to your house in about ten minutes. Mon-Sun from 8 am - 11 pm.

LOL!!! :D You're too funny. It's probably true too. ;D

What is the reasoning behind the banning of alcohol sales on Sunday, here in the U.S.? Does anyone know who came-up with that, when and why?

Well, I think it's just dumb.

I don't see anything wrong with alcohol sales on Sunday.

I've always wondered myself.  After all, as long as I buy the beer on Saturday night, I can drink it all I want on Sunday.  But I can't buy it on Sunday?  Never understood this law.

I don't understand the laws either but that is the way it is here. No alcohol for sale on Sunday. You can purchase liquor until midnight saturday. We live not to far from the Missouri line, and they allow you to purchase until 1 am. So it is very common for late moving partiers to travel accross the line to get booze. Our county is a "dry" county, so I don't know if it affects the whole state or just our county.  :-/

Isn't the alcohol Sunday law just a matter of religion?  I thought that's why they had Prohibition, because the Bible-thumpers were getting antsy about alcohol and temptations and all that.  Not to mention that Sunday is the "holy day" unless you're Jewish ;)

This is exactly what I was going to suggest, that the laws are tied in with religious aspects.

Hmmm.....

It's high-time we get rid of that type of non-sense.

Besides...

This shows underlying issues regarding separation of church and state - Does it not? Or am I going too deep here?  :P

I'm really reaching for this one, but they might just not want you to be hung over at work on Monday ;)  And non-drinking as a "value" doesn't necessarily have to be religious.

Liquor can be consumed on Sunday.

So....

Will sales on Sunday have any extra impact on that consern?

I think not.

Perhaps they assume that you drank everything you had on Saturday in the big party of the weekend 8)  Then use Sunday to recover from the hangover because you can't buy any more booze :D
