It certainly is a sad day in the neighborhood. :( I, like most of the people here, grew up watching Mr. Rogers' wholesome television series that taught morals, values, acceptance and love to millions of children around the world, a lesson that we could all use and remember in today's world. He may be gone, but his legacy will continue on, as the series will run forever in syndication...

Well put.

Everytime I put on a cardigan sweater I smile, picturing Mr. Rogers putting his on and turning to smile at me from the tv.

"There's only one person in the whole world like you."

He'll always remain fondly in my memories.

When I immigrated to the USA, Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street were staples in my childhood.  I loved the stories he told and the field trips he took us on, and I always wondered where he went at the end of each show.  Hard to believe that there'll be no more Mr. Rogers :-/  :(

He's been a morning companion and teacher for so many for so long. Hopefully, through the magic of television and re-runs, he will still be there for many more.  :'(  :) :'(

I thought this would be appropriate because this song always makes me happy:

It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?...

It's a neighborly day in this beauty wood,
A neighborly day for a beauty.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?...

I've always wanted to have a neighbor just like you.
I've always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.

So, let's make the most of this beautiful day.
Since we're together we might as well say:
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won't you be my neighbor?
Won't you please,
Won't you please?
Please won't you be my neighbor?

I can't believe how upset I am over this.  I never get this way over "stars".  I suppose it's because he never came across as a character - it was really him on the tv and I considered him a friend.

Sorry I'm getting so mushy.

I don't know if I've ever encountered a personality so warm and friendly as Mr. Rogers.  I guess it's partly because he's a minister and ministers are naturally friendly.  He just radiated all sorts of goody-goodness and I think we'll all miss that.  Not to mention that he was on the tube for more than 30 years, and some people I know (myself included) still tune in to the show whenever we can, or stick around when we happen upon it on PBS.

I think if there's a silver lining in this sad event, its the fact his shows will be on for probably another 30 years in re-runs.

When he wrapped up his final show last year, I remember hearing PBS say they would re-run the series "for future generations".

So at least his legacy will live on, and our kids, and their kids...can grow up with him, just as we did.

We never got Mr. Rogers Neighborhood where I lived when I was growing up, but we did when my girls were small and they loved it. I got so used to seeing him on TV and I wished he had been around when I was small. I had Mr. Dress-Up who was cool too and I was very sad when he passed as well so I know how you are feeling.

It is indeed a sad day in the neighborhood.  :'( :'(

I feel the same way, CS, so don't feel bad. I watched him every day growing up, and my kids watch him now (I watch with them sometimes, especially when I need a spiritlift). It is like losing a special friend.

Great show and a horrible loss.  I had just gotten a book out on the history of PBS and was reading about him just last night and wondered what he was up to now in retirement.  I learn today that he has died and I didn't even know he had cancer.  Well, I hope now he is resting in peace now, taking the final trolley ride up into the sky.  I'm am shocked...you never think about figures from childhood and adolescence dying, it is always a surprise when it happens...in a way, you think of these figures from childhood as immortal figures and then you realize that they are all human like us and must go sometime. :'(  :-http://www.idahoptv.org/kids/show_pages/images/rogers.jpg

try clicking this link, it should start playing the Mr Rogers theme song.  Don't worry, its linked to a safe site(no viruses). :)

It should open whatever kind of media player you use, and should start playing immediately.  It may take a few minutes to open if you have a slower connection.

Enjoy! :D

I can't believe how sad I am about Mister Rogers death. It's amazing to think that I've been watching Mister Roger's Neighborhood for almost 36 years! It's on here from 12:30 till 1:00 and my kids go down for their naps at 1:00. They turn off the t.v. and tell "Rogers" goodnight. It was very poignant today. :'( Life was so simple back then. This Simon and Garfukel song has been going round and round in my head all day.
"Time it was, and what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence, a time of confidences
Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories; they're all that's left you."

I found out some interesting facts about his show today on the radio:

-All his sweaters he wore on the show were handmade by his mother as Christmas gifts to Fred.

-Fred not only wrote most of the music played on the show, but he also played them, including the piano music in the theme song.

-Fred started his show because he "hated" the way other kids shows at the time were expoiting their audience with shameless promotions and commercials, and he wanted to change that, and did.

-Many of the characters names on the show were names of his real-life friends and family members.

Anyway, I thought those were pretty interesting.

Read this in the Washington Post.  The author is Paul Farhi:

Perhaps no story speaks more about the depths of Mister Rogers' appeal, about his pervasive grace, than one he recounted in an Esquire magazine profile a few years ago. It seems that Fred Rogers wanted to meet Koko, the gorilla who was taught to communicate using American Sign Language. Koko had watched Mister Rogers on television. When they first encountered each other, the 280-pound gorilla instantly enfolded Fred Rogers, all 143 pounds of him, in a massive embrace.

And then? And then Koko took off Mister Rogers's shoes.

Don't feel bad.  Last night ABC did a tribute to him and I admit I got goosebumps.

It's amazing how so many can be personally affected by the death of someone they've never even met before.  Guess its proof he was such a special person.

I vaguely remember them making a cake one time, but I don't know if that was the same episode.

I remember as a kid, my favorite part of the show was when he would feed the fish.  I always looked forward to that (I know, I was easliy amused :))

My favorite episode as a kid was when he went to a crayon factory and showed us how crayons were made.
