Subject: Your pre-season favorite

Written By: John_Seminal on 03/05/03 at 11:05 p.m.

Who do you think will win the baseball world series this year? Who will be in it?

I think this is the year the cubbies finally do it. Sosa will hit 74 home runs to break Bond's record, Wood will strike out 300, Prior will win 20 games, and Hee Sop Choi will be the rookie of the year. Oh, Clement will be the Cy Young winner.

What are your baseball fantasies this spring? Right now, even Detroit is in the running.  ;D ;D

Much as I would love the Cubs to win, methinks it'd be funny as hell if the Devil Rays just went nuts this year 8)  A sure sign of the Apocalypse, HO yeah!

I'm hoping Arizona gets back to the Series again.  I went to Game 1 when they played the Yankees in 2001, it was a great thrill to be there.  Baseball has such a long season though and last year was disappointing the way it ended.

Arizona has great starting pitching, it's their relievers I worry about.  I really like the rivalry they've developed with San Francisco too, it's pretty entertaining.  Although, I think it was a mistake of the Giants to let Dusty Baker go, but that seemed to be a foregone conclusion anyways.

I'm hoping to get to some Spring Training games this year too....

Go Expos! Of course it would take a miracle, but at least they were better than the Mets last year.

You're probably like one of the three Expos fans left in Quebec ;D  I heard they were doing a rotating home schedule in Puerto Rico and Montreal and some other cities this year though.

I thought I heard that Gary Carter was going to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as an Expo, that's pretty cool.  It's amazing how many good players they've had to get rid of the years.  I mean think about it, Randy Johnson was pitching for them about 15 years ago(when he was a pretty mediocre pitcher with a lot of potential) and he's still winning Cy Young awards nowadays...

Don't forget about Pedro Martinez 8)  Even though he has trouble staying healthy.

And I'm thinking if the Expos don't get serious help soon, they're gonna lose Vidro and Guerrero...

I think it will be an American League team - Angels,Mariners or the Yankees. I'm going for the Mariners of course. Yankees went out and spent some more cash but I bet there's still too many distractions going on in that organization. Anaheim's coming back with basically the same team as last year. And if Mike Cameron and Jeff Cirillo get it together things will get really exciting for Seattle come October.

LETS GO METS!!!!!!  Last year I was so upset with them. I couldn't believe before the season even started, they started trading most of team. I think they only left about 4 maybe 5 members. They spent all this boocoo bucks to bring in all these "wonderful" players and look what happened. THEY FINISHED IN DEAD LAST!!!!! What the hell were they thinking!!!!????? Of course they "had" for fire Bobbie Valentine. Now, I hear that they let Fonzie go. But they also brought back Sinjo. I don't understand why they let him go in the first place. I will still root for the Mets but until I see something "amazin'" I'm not holding my breath.

Do not forget about Vazquez. He might be the next Wood, he can strike out over 200 a year. Vidro reminds me of Sandburg from his batting ability as a second baseman. I would love to see Vidro play second as a Cubbie. Anyways, I hope the Expose stay a team. They are so nice, they always lose to the cubs. Plus, the cubs have recieved some great talent from the Expose, including 1987 MVP Andre Dawson.

Best team in baseball until players strike of 1994 ended season. From then on it's been fire sale after fire sale. The blame falls squarely on the local ownership group who didn't want to invest any money into the team.

Some players we've lost since 1994:

Pedro Martinez, Ken Hill, Kirk Rueter, John Wetteland, Jeff Fassero, Mike Lansing, Larry Walker, Moises Alou.

They're playing 22 home games in Puerto Rico this year, which sucks because one of the teams they'll be playing are the Angels, and I really wanted to see them.

Rocker was on Fox Sports Net's program The Best Damn Sports Show Period. He seemed to be nicer and less mean than I remember him from a few years ago. Maybe he should be given a second chance? He was a great pitcher and he could close out games with the best of them. I would not mind seeing him in baseball again because I can not help but wonder if one mistake is worth ending a persons life? It is not like he killed anyone or even laid a hand on anyone. He just expressed a very rude comment which most people disagree with. Plus, on the Fox show, they raised an interesting point-- Wether the media made him out to be worse than he really is.

The problem with a lot of sports "stars" they can get away with just about anything because they bring in the big bucks. Darryl Strawberry and Mike Tyson are just a couple of examples. Part of the game I think is true sportmenship. I think if a player (no matter what game he plays) does not show that quality, they should not be able to play.

I am going to go out on a limb and pick the Phillies they have done a lot in the off season to really improve that team and they should be a major threat this year.  Even though the Braves clean out the pitching roaster I think they will still be a threat, assuming they don't choke again.  But, unfortunitly you also, of course, have to watch out for the Yankees.

Is Smoltz going to be in Atlanta's starting rotation this year? And if so, who would be their closer?

The Phillies did do well during the offseason.  I'm looking forward to seeing how their season goes.

The Diamondbacks had everything in place to repeat last year and had one injury after another.

I'm very impressed with the World Series Baseball game on Xbox...beautiful graphics!  And the gameplay ain't bad.

I haven't played any new baseball video games recently on X Box or PS2, so I'll go old school and say RBI.  That game was so kick a** back in the day.

RBI was cool, but I didn't like how you didn't know where your outfielders were whenever that was a fly ball, and it seemed like they didn't set up automatically for the easy ones...plus all the fielders moved relative to the pitcher and you couldn't switch players...not to mention that the players were so dang slow that it seemed like every run I scored was on an inside-the-park homer.  It was fun to rack up the score though :D

That's too bad for the NL East then, he had a great season in 2002 assuming that role.  I hadn't heard anything about it during the offseason.  I thought there was talk at the end of last year that he would start again because the Braves were going to lose Maddux or Glavine or both.

I totally agree with you Cat, however I will point out that Mike Tyson may have gotten away with alot of cr@p, but he is in no way shape or form respected in the Boxing Industry.  The only reason why he is still fighting is because his fights bring in a whole lotta money simply because of the shock value.  Which means both fighters are paid a "whole lotta money".  I guess the point I am trying to make is scandal=money even in professional sports.  This was also proven during the whole Nancy Kerrigan & Tonya Harding episode.  But you know what, I am rambling & this probably has nothing to do with the original thread, so I will end it here. :-/  :P

They're paid that much because:

A)  The demand is there
B)  Not everyone gets to be that caliber of athlete
C)  The owners are stupid

:)
