Subject: NCAA Bracket Time

Written By: Indy Gent on 03/15/03 at 11:02 p.m.

Finally, the brackets for this year's NCAA Basketball Championship Tournament will be announce today at 6:30Pm EST. Who's in? Who's out? And who will win it all? Arizona, Kentucky, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Duke, and Florida are some of the projected teams, and Oregon, Pittsburgh, Louisville, and Dayton has won their conference tournaments. And who is the mid-major you believe should be in?

I LOVE March Madness!! Were there some upsets already or what? Out of the 7 "projected teams" that Indy mentioned in the original post, 5 or them were knocked out of their conference tourneys! College B-ball is the one sport left these days where you just never know. David truly can slay Goliath on "any given night". I've got to add that I'm in mourning, as my beloved Tar Heels won't be dancing for the 2nd year in a row. :-/

Go Gonzaga!

Although odds are against them right now (NC State is killing Duke by 12 early in the 2nd half), I hope Butler gets in, just because they were snubbed last year, and it would be unfair to the seniors to play in the NIT. They haven't beaten a good team this year (they lost to Duke). But 49 wins without a bid in two years? It would be tragic. (Sorry, Junior, but Gonzaga lost to San Diego in their conference tournament, and they haven't really beaten anyone of importance this year, either.)

25-5 is a good record, but like you said, they havent beat anyone notable.  I think with their record though, they might get a mercy bid, probably 12th or 13th seed.

Guess we'll see in a couple hours! :D

Go Hoosiers!!!

well Indy Gent, Butler got in. :)

I was pretty much in agreement with all the seedings this year.  Except I think Illinois deserved a #2.  Not that I am an Illinois fan, but they are a really tought team.

I will admit I was surprised Indiana got a #7, I had them getting #9.  It sucks though that they were only one seed away from being able to open up in Indianapolis.  That would have been awesome.  If they would have beat Illinois Saturday(they lost by a point), I think they could have got that #6 spot.

I was relieved when Butler's name was called. But IUPUI playing UK in the first round? I know the Mid-Con was down this year, but at least Valpo got no lower than 15th seed. At least give the Jags some credit for strengthening their non-conference schedule.

Considering they're up against Arizona, they're going to get massacred ;D

Sorry man.  Hope they lose by less than 50.  (No sarcasm intended)

Then again, it's not like either Duke or Cal are gonna get too far past the Sweet 16  ::)

Usually 1-vs-16 matchups are very lopsided.  The ones I've seen have the #1 seed beating the #16 seed by at least 30.  Although last year or the year before that, I think Kansas just barely beat #16 Holy Cross.  So even though it's never happened before, a 16 seed upset of a #1 seed isn't impossible.

I just don't think Vermont can beat Arizona, unless 'Zona just totally falls asleep ;)

Pitt is a darn good team (my friend's alma mater) but for whatever reason they have a tendency to play down to their opponent...and 15-seed upsets of 2-seeds are MUCH more probable than upsets over 1-seeds ;)  I don't think Arizona has ever lost an opening round as a 1-seed (hence the "no 1-seed has ever lost in the opening round" bruhaha that Dickie V always screams about).

Serendipity, baby!

By winning its play-in game, UNC-Asheville became like the second or third team with a losing-record ever to win a tournament game.  I think it'd be nice if all the 16-seeds were a play-in game though, for teams that are just barely on the "bubble".

But I gotta admit, this year's tournament just didn't interest me as much as the others have.

I think I'll pick UConn over Tennessee in the women's final ;)

Interestingly, the women's final this year will be broadcast the day after the men's final...usually it's the other way around.

Now I'm torn between which team should win Monday. Everyone wants Roy Williams to win one for Kansas before he allegedly goes to Carolina. But Boeheim's been at the same school for 27 years. He and Syracuse have gotta be rewarded sometime. Right? :-/

Go Orange tonight! I think Boeheim deserves to win one. This is coming from a UCONN fan too. Never thought I'd be pulling for Syracuse.

Well done, Syracuse!

I don't know if Roy's plans are to go back home or not. I used to live not far from him in Lawrence (my backhome) and watched him jog with the guys every day and he seemed happy in the cradle of basketball. But, if he goes, he goes, can't stop him :-/.  I have heard rumors if he goes we will be courting, among others, the coach from Marquette-Tom Crean.  :D

Last night's game was extremely frustrating because KU did not bring their best, if they had it would have been a no brainer, that is a "guarantee". Dunno why our perimeter players didn't want to take shots, but I love that our guys did find the way to break that weird 3-2 zone of theirs that is supposed to be "unbeatable". We didn't have a deep bench this year, so the loss of even one player fromthe game was huge.

Syracuse won, and their coach deserved it very much, he is another winning coach that doesn't get the spotlight like he deserved. Glad to see Beoheim pick one up.

Well congratulations to Syracuse! Boeheim deserved a championship and he got it. I wonder if Carmelo Anthony is ok. He didn't look so good last night. He took a beating from Texas and Kansas physically. His back was killing him. Anothony is one of the best players I've seen in a while. He reminds me of Dominique Wilkins. I think he is ready for the pro's. I'm usually not in favor of players staying in college for 1 year and than going to the pro's but this guy's got a gift.

I agree with you TV, although I feel that Roy W deserves one just as much.

I hope Heinrich is ok, as he has an ankle injury now.

modified to add:

Gerry McNamara is an incredible talent for Syracuse! Hope noone overlooks him when handing out praise. Hope it works out for Anthony going pro before finishing college. :-/ If it were my son that boy would stay in school! LOL Sorry just the mom in me coming out.

All in all, a good game in which no one deserved to lose, marred somewhat by Bonnie Bernstein's insistance on getting an answer from Roy Williams at his time of mourning. Even if it wasn't her fault, she shouldn't resort to Jim Gray's guerrilla tactics at a bad time. I'm sure wherever he goes, he'll win a title eventually.

You're absolutely right Indy....and in that vein........
Shaz, I apoligize for bringing up the "Roy coming home" thing so soon after a great game in which neither coach or team deserved to lose (although I gotta say, I think Kansas did bring their A game, they just got beat by 'Cuse hustling back on D and beating them on the boards). You've got to know how tough it has been being a 'Heels fan the last couple of years, though. Again, sorry Shaz! (I know that folks reading this are saying "Aren't they getting a little too serious over a game?" but, they just don't get it, do they?)
