MSNBC STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

ATLANTA, March 16 —   U.S. health officials on Sunday were analyzing samples from a mysterious respiratory illness described by the World Health Organization as “a worldwide threat.” While no cases have yet been reported in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention activated its emergency operations center for only the third time ever and hospitals across the country were put on alert.

I'm far more worried about this than I am about Iraq.

"OFFICIALS said the illness, called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, has infected more than 150 people, mostly in southeast Asia. At least 9 people have died."

150 people and 9 deaths? You're more likely to get struck by lightning...twice... and survive.

That's 6%! That's a pretty high mortality rate, if you ask me. The scariest thing is, they don't know what it is, or how to stop it.

This sounds pretty scary!  And they haven't found a medicine that can cure it!

It's hardly Captain Trips with a 6% mortality rate. But I would be a little concerned, at least until they find out how to stop it.

This was the first thing I thought of, too.  Of course it freaked me out as I have a chest cold that I can't seem to get rid of.  I think I am ok, since I am in the USA.  Still pretty scary. :o

I'm not freaked.  Yet.  When the CDC and WHO ring the bell like this, though, you're an idiot to dismiss it.  Here's a sobering paragraph from a report from today:

Over the past week, more than 150 new or suspected cases of the pneumonia have been reported around the world, the WHO said. Nine of those people have died.

Other cases have been identified in Canada, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam -- including one case of a Singapore doctor who began exhibiting symptoms as he flew from a medical conference in New York back to his home in Singapore.

The doctor, who had recently treated two SARS patients in Singapore, and his two traveling companions were placed in medical isolation Saturday in Frankfurt, Germany.

It is rather alarming news. Makes me wish I had never read Stephen King's The Stand...  :o

I read this today in the Washington Post & and was a little freaked out. It reminded me of this.....

There were two cases of teenagers somewhere near Richmond, VA a couple of months ago that both died from the same symptoms described above.  And I remember health officials were saying back then that they had no idea what type of infection they had.  No antibiotics helped & they died within like a week of each other.  I never heard anything else about it, but I would be interested to see if they re-open the case now.

As far as it not being in the U.S. yet...

It is. We just haven't "spotted" it yet.  :-/

S.K.'s story The Stand was the very first thing I thought of when I read this. It is v. worrisome, much more than what is happening in the middle east, to me anyway.
