Subject: American Soldier Accused of Bombing Kuwait Camp

Written By: Indy Gent on 03/22/03 at 11:55 p.m.

In a strange turn of events in Persian Gulf War II, an American is being taken into custody and questioned for the apparent hand grenading of Camp Pennsylvania, located near Kuwait City. As many as 12 American soldiers are reported as injured, 6-8 seriously. The madness has already begun. :-[

Yeah, very creepy.  Any soldier in any army who turns on his own like that is the lowest of the low...

Very odd, and if found to be guilty not going to lead a very pleasant life.

This is a sad turn of events.  I wonder what would cause a man to do something like this.

I've heard it mentioned once on CNN that this soldier was being held back in the camp (not sent into Iraq) and was a known troublemaker within his unit.  His act may have been more of a personal vendetta (criminal) rather than a terrorist act.

War is hell.  War brings stress, and sometimes it can make you do crazy things, like killing your own guys.

I'm hoping it was personal and not a terrorist act. We don't need any more paranoia than we already have, thanks. America is already terrified of everyone who looks "middle eastern", so I am quite content not to be afraid of our military men.

Well, not surprisingly, our evil bomber turned out to be a man with an Arabic or Muslim name. Mr. Akbar could get the death penalty. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. ::)

During the Vietnam war it was called "fragging".  As I understand it, gong-ho lts. were prime targets (wasn't there though)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I heard that he wasn't middle eastern.  He converted to Muslim at a young age when his mother married a Muslim man.

You're correct, he's a black man who converted to Islam and changed his name.  I've even read that he's a graduate of UC Davis with a degree in aeronautical engineering.

Apparently, he's reported to have confessed to members of his family that he's against the war with Iraq and was afraid (paranoid?) of being hassled by the U.S. Army because of his religious faith.  He had also been previously disciplined for insubordination and held back in camp as his unit pushed into S. Iraq.

Lots of speculation here.  Lets wait for the facts to come out.  There are lots of followers of Islam who are good, loyal citizens.  lets not repeat the Japanese Internemt mentality of WWII.  That was a BIG mistake, and a big injustice.  KEEP COOL.  We can't brand an entire people for the actions of one idiot.  So I think "Indy Gent" needs to tone down the rehetoric.

Maybe Don Carlos should read into his history before judging what he feels is rhetoric. The fact is this guy does not approve of this war and would rather see the true heroes suffer in the hands of Iraqi hooligans. At least I read and watch the news. What do you have in defense of your good intentions, Carlos?
P.S.: What is a Japanese Internemt mentality? ::)

When I had posted this they still hadn't given out any information as to who did the attack. My point was that we are already afraid of Arabs, I'd hate to have to be afraid of our military as well.

Ok, I am scaring myself here but I actually agree with Don Carlos. ;)  We do need to wait for all the facts.

Indy Gent:  What he means by Japanese Internment mentality is that we don't need to be judging all Muslims because of the actions of a few.  Just because they follow the same basic religion doesn't mean that they have the same ideology.  All are not responsible for the actions of one.  We should learn from the mistakes made during WWII.

Excuse me Dag and Don. But this has been a war of misinformation and miscommunication. The media in general is the one bringing up past ghosts. They have precluded that Muslims are not to be trusted in this war. And our President and Colin Powell have also given in to this preclusion. So unfortunately, unless reporters do a better job in sending us more accurate, less biased information, we will continue to make mistakes of past wars.
