Subject: Changing Gov't Regulations

Written By: Don_Carlos on 04/06/03 at 03:17 p.m.

According to my local press, and wire services articles, lots of changes to government regulations, like the Clean Water Act and others are being alter, sort of "under the radar" as most people focus on the war.  In addition, lots of folks are saying that the Patriot II act, and new (in?) Justice Dept rules infringe upon our Constitution Rights.  I'm concerned.  Is anyone else?   :(  ???  >:(  :(

Perhaps if the American people chose to look at their own society instead of frothing and fixating on Afghanistan and Iraq, they might realize that their Constitution has been shredded. The Fifth Amendment? Well, the way around that is to never charge people, just hold them. Shuttle them out of public sight.

At any rate, the Bush administration has shown nothing but contempt for the Constitution. Heck, I don't even have to reach on down to Bush's religious bender in order to nail him on that. His need to turn everything into a Christian revival is, for once, the least of his offenses. I won't hold George Dubya responsible for the actions of truly stupid people, but I have to say, it's a mighty convenient bonus when circumventing the US Constitution is your first priority.

Bush has sworn before God and country to uphold the Constitution. He has failed. On those grounds alone, he deserves impeachment.

Testimony of T.H. Edgar to US Commision on Civil Rights, 12 October, 2001

Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich, 2.17.2002

Well, I hadn't heard anything about this, so I'm not aware of the changes you are talking about.  I have to say, it doesn't really surprise me, though.   ::)

Everytime a bomb goes off in Iraq, I keep thinking, "There goes new text books." When Congress agreed to pay (I can't remember off hand how much) for this war, I keep thinking, "There goes up-grading school buildings. There goes Medicare, Medicaid, VA benefits, etc. etc." It just goes to show you the priorities of this administration. Very sad.

I do agree that Bush is not doing his job at upholding the Constitution. I have mentioned that before. I have also heard that there are people trying to impeach him. Unfortunately, with a Republican Congress/Senate, that will be highly unlikely-unless some of those dudes "see the light."

More stuff today, and sorry, I can't provide links, but it seems that, I think its the (in)Justice Dept, has hired a former chief of the KGB as a consultant in its efforts to institute what HE called an "internal passport", a national identity card, and a data base on each of us so extensive that the feds will know just about everything about all of us (including our favorite positions, and whether we sleep on our sides, back or belly).  This will make what they have on me (in my FBI file) look like nothing.  Big Brother will be watching us all (you too 80's), and they'll make the Gestapo look like rank ametures. So much for privacy (4th amendment), and think of the chilling effect on the First!  Jezze, you guys  could all get into trouble just because you associate with me on this board, and I'll wind up in an internment camp.

Yes, but the stuff I read was a bit confusing.  This was mentioned in the same "breath" with what I refered to above.  Could you enlighten us all? What I got was, as I said, confusing, but alarming.  Can you fill in?

Don Carlos, in all your years of being a college professor(yea right ::)) I thought you would have known how to do a simple online search for something, like I just did for CAPPS II.  I know you didn't ask me for the info, but it didn't take rocket science to obtain it:

CAPPS II (Computer Assisted Passenger Pre-Screening) searches a huge database to determine whether you may be a "flight risk".  Potential searches can include financial information, public records, and criminal history.

Side Note:  All possible theoris and outlooks of this program are still pure speculation given the fact the CAPPS II program is still in the planning and development stage.  Delta Airlines will be the first to test this new program using passengers' financial history alone.

PS-, this program will draw such an enormous opposition in the Senate and House(as it should), I honestly don't see it happening any time soon, at least not without some major renovations.

So Don, don't have an anurism(sp?) worrying about it like you do with everything else. ;)

1) well, smart butt, when I learned to use computers, you had to program them yourself.  And the stuff they could do was not particularly relevant to my work.  So I freely admitt that I am not a computer nerd.  In fact I'm a rank ameture.  So what?  Lots of people from my generation are.  GOT A PROBLEM WITH THAT? >:(  And, if you use your (supposed) computer skills, as Race did on the "current pic" thread, you can resolve you (very arrogant and disrespectful - I don't like being called a liar) about my tenure as a collage professor.  Check it out if you know how.

2) Yeah, just my point.  BIG BROTHER IS WATCH YOU!

3) If you agree that this program ("as it should") draw massive opposition in Congress, than why are you are you making this post?  We seem to agree that this is a major infringment on the 4th Amendment.  So. are you protesting this infringment on the Bill of Rights and extension of intrusive government?  Or, are you silent because its a Republican administration doing it?

4) Thanks for the concern  ::)  I've had mine  ;D  I've resigned myself that the FEDS will be coming for anyone who openly disagrees with the GOVT, and will lock us away.  Your communications with me put YOU under suspicion, by the way.  Hope you enjoy the upcomming interrigation ;D

well, I'm not going to block traffic and hold my little sign and make a fool of myself to protest, that job is resevered for the anti-war folks.

But no I don't support CAPPS II in its crude form, as we read/hear about it today.  Changes will be made.

Let's face it: We're all doomed. All our rights will be taken away. I'm going to make sure I find a comfortable place in the Guhlag before all the good cells are taken.

The Simpsons said it best in their schoolhouse rock parody:

There are a lot of flag burners who have got too much freedom
I want to make it legal for policemen to beat 'em
'Cause there's limits to our liberties
Least I hope and pray that there are
'Cause those liberal freaks go too faaaaar!

I know you guys are serious, but it's kinda funny how frantic you always sound.  I can't help but wonder how miserable it must be to live like that.  I hope you have a worry-free day today! :)

Thanks for the good wish - really!

Let me just say the constant vigalence is the cost freedom, and rights not protected and soon erroded.  So I am worried for our country.  And, to comment on something 80's said, I think the democrates are just as bad.  Ronny Reagan was the first Pres to use the CIA as much as JFK, who used it for demestic survailance as well as foreign.  Its not a partisan issue.

I've said it before here and I'll say it again:  Some of these people remind me very much of Mel Gibson in the movie "Conspiracy Theory"! :D

I think some here live in a little underground bunker spending their whole day and night coming up with conspiracies that their "evil" govt is using to get them, then they sit around and worry about it.

Certainly no way to live.

The CIA and the FBI get blamed for so many things it's not even funny. If they were responsible for half the things they've allegedly done (i.e. all those conspiracies) and half the things they could do, we would have this invincible protective force and wouldn't have to be afraid of terrorism. Plus, they can't really accept or deny anything for fear of letting the enemy know whatever information they may have.

They're an easy escape goat.

Scapegoat
Scape"goat` (?), n.
1. (Jewish Antiq.) A goat upon whose head were symbolically placed the sins of the people, after which he was suffered to escape into the wilderness. Lev. xvi. 10.

2. Hence, a person or thing that is made to bear blame for others. Tennyson.

It can be s-p-e-l-l-e-d either way. "Escape" is a word and so is "scapegoat." Would it be a lame save to try and have both words - uncombined - mean the same thing?

Where does this "conspiracy theory" stuff come from?  The abuses committed by both the FBI and CIA against law abiding citizens are established facts - Martin Luther King comes to mind, and evey Luciel Ball for God sake.  You can go to the FBI web site and read some of there files.  So its not me who is paranoid, but our intelligence services.  In the 50's through the 80s they were looking for communists under every bed, and now its terrorists.

The Patriot Act vertually repealed Habius Corpus for anyone suspected of terrorism.

The proposed new air pollution standards will weaken the current ones.

The array of proposed budget cuts and reallocations will, according to Congressman Bernie Sanders (I, VT), reduce the benefits available to veterans - including all those follks we ALL agreed we supported.

Poindexter's (the guy convicted in the Iran/Contra affair for contempt of Congress) "Total Information Project" is designed to allow access to the financial, medical, and computer (ie what web sites you visit) information on every citizen in the country.

The records (ie credit card and check recipts) maintained by book sellers can NOW be accessed by the FBI.

None of this is "conspiracy theory", its facts.  These things ARE happening, no need to theorize about them.  We can read about them even in my local, home town newspaper.  Not to mention the Congressional Record.

You can disniss my concerns as paranoia, or you can take action to make democracy work the way its suppose to, by protecting the freedoms and rights were all pay lip service to.
