Subject: Crazy pop culture of the early 00's:your thoughts

Written By: Tv on 04/07/03 at 03:30 p.m.

From 2000-2003 we have had some crazy things happen: The WTC comes to mind, Teen-pop, war and war protesting, the botched election of the presidentcy, the deep recession of the economy, Enron and world com scams, and Reality Shows. I just think there has been some real weird things happen in this decade so far. I have found the last 4 years of pop culture to be: Bizzare.

I can't stand all the reality tv hoopla & teen pop trash that's polluting the radio stations.

Teen pop & reality tv are just plain rubbish that people will obiviously regret in 10 years (from now).

(Just to say that today's pop culture really bites.)

BELIEVE ME on this dude, they said the same thing 10 years ago about 1990-'93/'94.  People always think the present sucks.

All you have to do is switch some of the words around:

"From 1990-'93 we have had some crazy things happen: The Gulf War comes to mind, the fall of the Soviet Union, Grunge, a wacked out election with 3 canidates running for office, after 12 years a Democrat in the White House, a DEEP RECESSION of the economy, trash talk shows like Jenny Jones, Geraldo and Riki Lake, and MTV has been really starting to suck too."

AND...

"I can'd stand all the trashy TV talk shows and stupid grunge music trash that's polluting our radio stations.  Not taking a bath is supposed to be cool?  I can't believe kids idolize that Kurt Cobain idiot.

Grunge and talk show TV are just plain rubbish that people will obviously regret in 10 years (from now)

(Just to say that today's pop culture really bites)  Hey maybey we should make a movie with that title?  Reality Bites?"

"Realty Bites" was a good  movie that defined a mediocre decade.
(no offense)

I know what your stating, but this is just my opinion.

Ironically, I used to like watching talk shows during the 1990's and now I don't care for them.

If they ever have a "I Love the 00's" on VH1, they will mention these things:

Joe Millionaire
"How could any of those contestants not realize he wasn't a millionaire?  He was the dullest, dumbest millionaire in history!"

Harry Potter
"Wait a minute, how could he ride a broom?  He's a guy!  Guys can't ride brooms!"

Nelly - "Hot in Herre"
"Great beat, I danced to it all the time, but did he sound to anyone else like a fourteen-year-old at a strip club?"

Chicago
"You know, I don't really think I needed to see Richard Gere rip off his pants."

The rise of Eminem
"Did anyone notice that right after he did that duet with Elton John, Elton started getting a lot more profane?  Makes me wonder what traits rubbed off on Em, if you know what I'm saying..."

Avril Lavigne - "Sk8er Boi"
"Right.  Not Skater Boy, but Sk-eight-er B-O-I.  Someone buy that chick a dictionary."

Malcolm in the Middle
"God, I wanted to shut that kid up."

Spider-Man
"He beat the crap out of Randy Savage!  Now THAT'S a superhero!"

Who's the president?
"Palm Beach will never live that one down, not ever."

The Rock Revivalists
"Yeah, all the 'The' bands.  THE Strokes, THE Vines, THE Hives, and so on.  They all sounded THE same to me."

Britney and Justin
"Justin, you stupid mother****er."

Lord of the Rings
"And suddenly, Lord of the Rings was like the biggest movie ever, and before I knew it, the geeks had taken control of everything."

Spongebob Squarepants
"Dear Lord, was everyone on crack in the early 00's?"

I don't know if people necessarily always hate the present. I liked every year up to 1997.

I'm still waiting for some artistic movement to sweep people off their feet and into the dance floors (and by that I don't mean that bumpin' and grindin' c-rap they play ad nauseam such as Nelly *shudder*). Maybe the latter half of the decade will be better...

I don't think music has been all that bad in the past 3 years. I think the whole teen bubblegum pop is fading out slowly (thank god) but I will say that TV just SUCKS!  It royally sucks.  I stopped watching TV on a regular basis about a year ago, because I just couldn't bear to watch anymore reality TV.  IMO, the only good show on primetime is C.S.I. (not the lame Miami one either).  Other than that, nada.  Thank goodness for The Learning Channel, that way I can watch back to back episodes of Trading Spaces every night instead of the crap on regular TV. ;)

I'll agree TV is at its lowest point in like a while. I can't remember when TV was so bad. There are still good shows but reality TV is "Gimmick TV". I mean America's Hottest Woman, star Search, and American Idol. Its bad TV at its best.

Subject: Re: Crazy pop culture of the early 00's:your thoug

Written By: Anti_Pop_Superstar on 04/08/03 at 12:35 a.m.

"American Idol" is just tiresome. Even  if a certain former teen queen/stage actress were to be one of the judges.
"Joe Millionaire" Some deperate person striving to get attention.
"Trading Spaces",in my opinion is pure dullville.
(Not to get confused with the hilarious classic film of the same name)

I prefer scripted programming like "South Park" (Crude, but well written) & half hour programs that once ruled prime time called "sitcoms".
("Just Shoot Me" is the last of the great sitcoms, in my opinion. And it had gotten worse since the 5th season & will get canned in May.)

And reality tv isn't what's bad right now.
Unoriginal series have came out as well.
Remakes of "Dragnet", "Family Affair", & "Star Search"
"Fastlane" ...a.k.a. "Miami Vice: 2003" (execpt "Miami Vice" is better)
"American Dreams"  a.k.a. "The Wonder Years"
And I've heard FOX will remake "Mr. Ed".
I'm better off watching "V.I.P." reruns than those awfully lame programming. (no offense to fans of those shows)

Being at college I don't have much time to watch tv, but when I do its usually to watch a sports game or "Whose Line Is It Anyway", "Monk" or to check the news real quick but other than that I don't watch much.  At first the "Reality Shows" didn't bother me, but now they are just getting ridiculous especially the ones of FOX.  Teen-pop I don't listen to it nor know anyone who does so it doesn't really bother me, but I do agree it is slowly on its way out.

Hey, it doesn't matter what era, what year, what decade.
Most of the time what's "pop" is dumb and boring and senseless and crude and silly.
You have to ask yourself; who is responsible for it becoming "pop", which is short for popular?
Was it you? Was it me? Who was it?
Who can we point the finger at?
Who's responsible for Britney Spears selling millions of albums?
Who's responsible for Joe Millionaire being a highly rated program?
Who's responsible for most of pop music on pop stations being so irritating that you have to change the station because you can't even stand to hear it, let alone listen to it?
There are only two possibilities:
1- Most of us are dumb, boring, senseless, crude and silly, or
2- There is a worldwide conspiracy spending billions of dollars a year to ensure that we see and hear what they think we should see and hear.

I never really cared for reality shows, aside from 1 season of The Real World a few years ago.

Modern popular music doesn't bother me so much either.  There are some good ones out there but it's otherwise puke.  And commercial rap = c-rap = crap.

And people in the news have just gotten more unbelievable.  Elian Gonzales, George W Bush, Joseph Liebermann, Osama Bin Laden, all those kids who murdered, wow.

teeny pop is on a life support system, or it's dead already. Britney is finished, I hear she's had a nervous breakdown.

mandy moore? christine aguilerioliarow....blah. They're barely a blip on the radar nowadays.

but nobody has stepped into the spotlight yet, the music industry is in a lull waiting for the next Cobain or Beatles, there's just not much going on.

Reality TV will not last forever, just like the millionaire, weakest link, they'll lose popularity and be relegated to midday or off the air completely.

I think the 00's are going to take a turn for the better in 05, I think that'll be the rebirth of the glorious early 90's.

The problem with reality TV is that it is constantly trying to force a reaction from you instead of attempting to entertain. I hear radio DJs go on, analyzing what would happen if X snogged Y or if Y slapped X in the face.

Billy Connolly said it best; 'Reality Television is watching someone watching a television.'

It has been pretty crazy. Started off with the Bubblegum pop from the late 90s, that died around mid 2001, and Neo-soul, Nu-Metal, Rap(and heavily rap influenced R&B), urban pop, and pop-punk have taken over in the mainstream music realm. And everyone thought the late 90s was bad.

The terrorism craziness marked by September 11, the Beltway Sniper, and The Chechnya rebels taking the Russians hostage, recession and unemployment, is all we hear everyday on the news anymore. Oh yea, and now the California Recall.

Digital is the name of the game, Digital(broadband) internet, digital cable, digital televisions, DVD, have all tapped into mass market.

I'm still mad over the fact that y2k did not happen, that would've been interesting to see.

oh yeah TV is definitely GARBAGE(Reality shows-UGH)

Is it me or is Hollywood on a "Turn it into a movie" phase?
Although this has been done before the turn of century, it seems like Hollywoods is running out of original ideas. Are they going to turn EVERY single videogame/book/Comic into a flick?Someone please tell me that "The House of the Dead" is not based on the game of the same name....please

On another note, is it mandatory for hip hop artists to make their own clothing line?? Why are kids spending money on that junk?
Nelly-Applebottom
Eve-Fetish
and so on...
why do these people think they can slap their names on a T-shirt and call themselves designers? Do they actually work hard at coming up with designs and so forth-I think not.
It was cute when Naughty by Nature and WuTang(late 90's) did it back in the day but now it's just TIRED.

PS
We must stop POP stars from appearing in movies, it's just wrong! ITs been happening way too much since 2000

You raise a good point, Howard. Sexual orientation always seems to be scrutinized wherever you turn (I heard about Coronation Street's kiss between two blokes and then before that in Brookside it was two women snogging . . .).

I don't know about everyone else but if that's the way script-writers have to go to get people to watch. I think it says something about society.

Oh, Coronation Street and Brookside are soap operas.

Mordor, I agree with everything you said in your post.

As far as I am concerned, Pop-Culturally speaking, the 90's never happened. :)

To me, it seemed like most of the music bands spent the entire decade trying to find an original sound, and they all failed.  99% of 90's bands sound exactly alike.

People who like the 80's will bash the 90's because the 90's was a chemical reaction to the 80's pop culture wise. I like both the 80's and 90's but this deacde I don't really like so far.

i do agree there is a huge bi sexual orientation movement which is the new "rage". There are more bi ppl than now than ever which is being more and more socially acceptable. ;)

I don't understand the whole Bisexual thing. I mean for women I guess its alright. I don't think for guys its as accepted. Still as a guy I can't see going out with a guy. Its just weird to me. If I went out with a woman who was bisexual it wouldn't bother me. I didn't mean to offend anybody who is bisexual with my comments but I'm just stating my opinion.

Nudity was pretty popular in the late 90's then it took a two or three year break now its back again. "Skin" from what I read in a newspaper didn't get good ratings. Half of the people that were watching the first episode of "Skin" tuned out at the halfway point of the show. I hope this current trend of nuditity doesn't produce a trend of "overkill" if you will. There's only so many nude bodies you can see before its gets like eating McDonald's everyday.
