Subject: MTV/VH1= GARBAGE! What happened?

Written By: jj65 on 04/25/03 at 04:59 p.m.

Just looking at there schedules,  it's very clear that absolutely nothing is going on in the music industry, what happened to highlighting young bands with cool music video's now it's some cookie cutter flavor of the week rapper......like any of us give a damn about "fitty cent" or whatever his name is. Anyway, here is the TV lineup for tomorrow

MTV

Is it so BLEAK that they have to devote 2/3 of there programming to stupid Real World/Road Rules? WHO CARES ALREADY? where is the music? MTV cribs is just more generic braindead rappers showing off there cars and scarface posters. They have this other show, 25 greatest video stars, what is with these "lists" shows that chronical past hits? What about the future? Does the industry even have a future?

ok on to MTV2

8:00 PM Behind the Music

I love the 80's, yea well everybody does, showing a retro show once in a while is nice, but the entire network is built around it! Will we love the 00's? How about showing some stuff on some indy bands, film some concerts and show us, interviews with rising starts. That's what the network should be built on!

Ok, a bunch of countdowns and BTM's about stars from the PAST! And they've been running them ad-nauseam for the past 5 years! I now know Sly Stone's life story, the lyrics to all of Carol Kings songs and every single tragic detail of Curtis Mayfields accident......but what about the future? Is there nothing going on now worth talking about?

Lisa Marie Presley? Spare me.

Agree. MTV bites.
And VH1 is also becoming MTV .
I still liked VH1 until they canned "The Rock Show" and the brief "Eye Candy", inwhich aired classic & current videos.

MTV became worse since 1997 when they started to lack videos, canned "Beavis & Butt-Head", brought up "Road Rules", and awful pop acts & rappers started to dominate.

They should showcase more singer/songwriters & rock acts like Vanessa Carlton, The White Stripes, and other artists that actually have talent.

VH1 started to become bad around  1997/1998  took off music based shows ("Big 80's", "Women's First", Sex Appeal", etc.). It became an MTV clone. (Minus the reality trash)

Around 2000, VH1 became worse with constantly airing tv specials & countdown shows.

Much like MTV constantly airs "The Real World" and other awful shows.
Not to mention "Sifl & Olly" & "Daria" were the last "current" MTV shows that were worth watching.
And where's the music videos?
In 1999, they had a countdown of the 100 greatest videos & did it on the same fashion of how VH1 did their "100  greatest" countdowns.
Ironic that on "25 Lame" that they say that the 10 worst are banned from the channel. Like how can that be if MTV doesn't even play anything. Probably two hours of the same putrid videos  shown every day at 3 A.M.  :P

Unfortunately, VH1 Classic is only available on digital cable/satellite.  :-/
Probably the last great music video network out there.  :D
But I collect music videos on VHS/DVD anyways.  :D

MTV2 is also on digital cable/satellite, but I already have BET on my basic cable system.
And the only show worth watching is the "Top 25 countdown" with some celeb's favorite videos. (Yes, I like some rap & R&B videos, mostly from the 1980's to the mid 1990's)

Yes, the network should probably stop airing that 80's nostalgia show.  But they do have a good reason for showing it:  It's just about the only thing on that channel worth watching, and probably the one getting any ratings too.

I liked it when VH1 had the show 8-Track Flashback.  Does that come on VH1 Classic?  I wouldn't know since I just have basic cable at both college and home.   :-/

'tis true, and even as a young teen, I think MTV, well, sucks compared to how it was a few years ago. At least they had quality shows like Daria back then, if they couldn't have just videos...

hmmmm, I guess I am the minority here because I could sit & watch Behind The Music all day long.  ::)

And another show I love (which I am sure you people won't agree) is The E! True Hollywood Story.  Did anyone see the episode on Chuck Barris & The Gong Show?  That was great! :D

Those shows are okay, the only thing I don't like about them is that they all seem the same to me.

And The Big 80s and 8-Track Flashback were great shows.  I loved them.

I see somewhat of a lack of variety in MTV's schedule.

The thing I hate about MTV is there is no video's. I'm only 23 and I can't even watch MTV. In 1986 you could probably turn on MTV and see a Robert Palmer, or Debrage video. In 1993 you could have seen an STP or SWV video. Now you turn it on and you see Good Charlotte or Avril Lavigne on. I mean that music is for 15 year olds. Today's music sucks because record executives think its 1999 when the economy was great and everything was happy. I mean the economy is terrible and we need "good" music to reflect. I'm so sick of glossed up acts making it big. Record Sales are down because music is very bland. I was reading an article in VIBE magazine and one of the old aschool R&B artists(Aaron Hall who used to be in R&B Group "Guy") was saying how the record industry is giving everybody  a raw deal(putting it lightly) right now. One record executive asked him for a demo and he's like I've been in the game for 17 years and I need demo? The people in the recording industry have not a clue what they are doing. VH1 is such a sellout. I don't need to see a special on Jennifer Lopez's marraige. Its a music station not "Hollywood Extra". There's no talent in the industry anymore. If you are a rapper you need to be a thug, if your a woman artist you have to concentrate on your fashion. I think "image" is the most important thing right now and that should not be.

I dont get MTV or VH1 here in Canada, however I do get Much Music and Much More Music(canadas version of MTV)

Its all the same as you have mentioned here to. Alot of the stuff up here is actually recycled VH1 or MTV shows, so its even worse.

Music really needs a kick in the ass these days. And IMHO is way over saturated with Rap & R&B. And when they arent playing that, they force these absolute idiotic irrelevant brainless shows on us.

I just sent MM a very negative email centered around this whole topic the other day, and I suggest you try doing it. It only takes a minute and maybe just maybe if they receive enough negative feedback they may take notice(I can dream cant I ?)

I used to watch Much Music alot. I don't watch it too much anymore. I'm just not into today's music that much.

Sorry to say this but, I hated that show....they CUT all the videos short....much like those old K-Tel records chopped all the songs. VH1 Classic is about all I watch anymore....great videos!

Speaking of cutting videos short  >:(, I hate how VH1's Top 20 (or 30, whatever it is) Countdown cuts their videos short!

Subject: What happened?  Unfortunately, The Osbournes...

Written By: Davester on 04/28/03 at 08:54 a.m.

I'm not a regular viewer of the Osbournes, but I know well that I am too harsh in my criticisms. This crass, commercially-slick "reality" show will have far-reaching impact at least in American culture. Ozzy is the new Homer Simpson in that sense.

But MTV gave me "Stick Figure Theater" and "The Maxx"; I haven't given it much credit ever, though. Well, at least not since I was young enough to want to see Journey playing keyboards on the side of a building.

And it's years between really good videos. "Jeremy" (Pearl Jam) set a new trend and aside from "Do the Evolution", "Digging in the Dirt" (Peter Gabriel) and a couple of Radiohead videos (and UNKLE), there hasn't been much.

Besides, MTV runs from really good videos like "Jesus Christ Pose" (Soundgarden). You'll notice that by the time they got to "Spoonman", the band wasn't even bothering to appear in the videos (all you see of Soundgarden is stillshots). And then they release eye-candy ("Black Hole Sun") and suddenly they're a great band ....

I don't watch MTV anymore. At least VH-1 has documentaries about music.

  Highlights of my MTV experience:

Video:
- Styx - "Mr. Roboto"
- Michael Jackson - "Thriller"
- Peter Gabriel - "Sledgehammer"
- Soundgarden - "Jesus Christ Pose"
- Pearl Jam - "Jeremy"
- Radiohead - "OK Computer"

Shows:
- The Maxx
- Liquid Television
- Headbangers' Ball (Soundgarden and Queensryche interviews were amazing experiences)
- Celebrity Deathmatch

Other:
- MTV's banning of "Jesus Christ Pose" video
- Watching MTV get away with ridiculing its viewers daily

MTV's Loss:
- Belle & Sebastian's "Legal Man" video--saw it on the web
- Gorillaz--saw it first on the web
- Radiohead's "Pyramid Song" video--saw it on the web
- AfroCelt Sound System' & Peter Gabriel, "When You're Falling"--saw it on the web

Just a few, and my memory is spotty...

I read somewhere that a top MTV exec said that they only have time to play 35 full videos a week! 35! Maybe, if they stopped showing the same 4 shows all the time they could fit a few more in there! And when they do show those 35 full videos, they're CRAP!

But, I don't agree with what Tv said. I know a lot of people who are well into their 20s who listen to Good Charlotte and Arvil Lagvine. I like both those artist a lot. It's not just for 15 year olds. They are both really talented artists. They're not like Britney and NSync who don't write thier own stuff and don't even know how to play an insrument. You still may not agree, and thats fine. I just don't like to be put into a category with 15 year olds.

Anyone remember "The Box"? The only channel ever to show requested music 24/7 with only momentary breaks for station identification? Not all the songs were things I liked, but they played everything from country to hip hop to hard rock to cheesy pop.

Then it got bought out by VH1. I miss it. Yeah, I got bored when they showed "The Real Slim Shady" 75 times in one hour, but it easily outstripped MTV and VH1.

Just my humble opinion.

yes it is.

I remember "The Box".

The coolest thing about "The Box" is that we could get it on broadcast(antenna) TV.  We just got satallite a few years ago so "The Box" was the closest thing we had to "MTV" for a long time.

What happened?

It's called greed.  They deliver a low cost product and funnel the profits into the pockets of corporate executives instead of providing innovative programming for their consumers.
