Subject: Skateboarding

Written By: darkprince on 05/04/03 at 10:21 a.m.

Maybe this is just my school, but everyone wants to be a skateboarder or at least like a skateboarder. although skatboarding has been around since the 80s, I feel as if their has been a rebirth of it. I do skateboard and I'm pretty sure i started before the fad. So obviously i wear the clothes, the shoes, the long hair as any skater should and which pretty much tells others that "yes, i skateboard". And over the past couple years, ive seen alot more of it. And these guys dont even board. They just think its cool to wear hooded sweatshirts and black clothing with skate companys on it. Has anyone seen this or would care to comment?.

I have noticed seeing more and more kids skateboarding around where I live.  Skateboarding was around even in the 70's.  But it really became mega popular in the mid and late 80's.  Especially the late 80's.

The "skater" craze seemed to die out around 1990, with only the die hard skater fanatics still doing it.  Remember in the movie Clueless from 1995, how Alicia Silverstone's character looked down on the skater kid for being "so 5 years ago"?  Being a skater really wasn't much of a trend in the 90's.

But I think it has definately made a comeback.  That and breakdancing.

Heh, Skateboarding has been around since the 20s, check out this link:

http://www.interlog.com/~mbrooke/history.htm

Funny to believe that the first skateboard park was here in Clearwater FL, not far from where the Phillies practice during the off season. I can remember my first skateboard, it was a banana board with a kick tail and compared to the flatbed rail cars you call skateboards of today, it was very small!

As for looking like them, well as with any "icon", Surfers, Street rodders, Grunge, punk, goth, that are popular of the day, people will try to imitate them..

We all know the reason that kids started taking off the milk crates off their scooters in the 1950's was because Marty McFly went back and time and showed them how to do that.

"Whoa, whoa stop kid stop!"

"Hey you broke it!!!  Come back here!"

"I'll give it back to you alright"

"Wow look at him go!"  ;)

I got me first skate board in maybe 1974, it was flat wood with clay wheels.  Very little in the way of smooth surfaces to skate on so we were mostly on the streets.  Clay didn't allow for much in smoothing out the ride, the vibration from the friction traveled from the bottom of your feet to the top of you head.
The 70s had a pretty big skate board following too, many kids in the neighborhood had them and there were magazines and a movie that was just re-released featuring the group of guys that popularized skateboarding back in those days.  I don't recall any clothing necessary to identify yourself as a boarder though, just a skateboard and missing patches if skin would pretty much do that.

hey, that's me! :D

i wear vans for comfort value, not skateboarding.  i have wide flat feet, so i have problems finding shoes in my width, and then getting inserts so they're comfortable.  vans fit my feet perfectly, i love 'em. :)  as for the hoodies and black clothing issue...hoodies are just comfortable.  and black has been my first choice of what to wear since i was about nine.  i'm weird, i guess.

but yes, long hair and skate boards are coming back.  i want to try to skateboard, but that's kind of hard for someone with no sense of balance. ;)

I notice alot of people like that at my school. Most of 'em are just poser's. But a lot of them do skateboard. I guess it's just a fad or something?

Skateboarding is synonymous with the "punk" fad today. Me personally, I consider myself "punker" then the posers, and I don't even skateboard.

I bet you $5 that at least half the posers stop skateboarding after this punk fad fades out.

No, I'm not angry, why do you ask? ;D :P ::)

I skated back in the day.

Cool old school skaters that put the sport on the map:

Christian Hosoi
Tony Hawk
Rodney Mullen
Tony Alva
Steve Caballero

I still sport my Airwalks too. 8)

Right on Funky!  Man that brings back memories....I guess I can say I was a classified "Skate Betty" back then.  Couldn't skate down the street, but I could pull of a mean "Ollie"!  I guess all those hours of watching Rodney Mullen paid off!  Remember those old vids, like "Animal Chin" I think that was put out by Powell Peralta and the Vision Skate Team videos were so cool!  Then there were the countless hours hanging out in the skate shop reading "Thrasher" & "Transworld Skateboarding" magazines.  Does anyone remember the "Skate Rock" Vol. 1-8 records too.  They featured bands like J.F.A. (Jodie Fosters Army), T.S.O.L., Black Flag, Dead Kennedy's, Agent Orange, etc.  pretty much any and all punk bands out of Southern Cal. back in the 80's.

I highly recommend watching the movie "Dog Town and Z Boys" if you were a skater back in the day.  It is a great movie!

Oh yeah, I still sport my Vans.... ;)

Right on, FF.  8)

I had a Caballero deck, then went to a G&S deck, then a Rob Roskoff.  Riding on Independent 159's and OJ II's...ah, what memories.  8)

I still sport my Vans also...and I can still pull off a 180o ollie.  8)

Go rent the movie "Gleaming the Cube".  It came out around 1988 and perfectly captures the late 80's skater craze.  Christian Slater is in it.

The cool thing about skating in PHX was that there were many dry canals in the valley where you could skate for free and not be bothered.  We had a downhill run near my house off Cave Creek & Hearn, and I also used to go skate at 96th St & Shea or somewhere thereabouts (my great uncle lives over there) until they deterred that by putting in cement blocks to stop skaters.  >:(   Over near 43rd Ave & Pinnacle Peak there was a great run that led into a half-pipe type structure.

I went through several pairs of Airwalks, Chuck Taylors, Vans and even messed up a pair of Air Force Ones...

Hmmm.....

I recall Skate boarding being very popular in the 70's, My first one had steel wheels and a flat wooden board. I think it peaked somewhere around the whole roller skating time in the 70's and early 80's.

I also remember having a mohawk, in the very early 80's and liking bands like DRI, sudden impact, dead kennedy's etc. And that Punk was synonimous with fishing and skate boarding.

Along with skate boarding, punk seems to be making the rounds again. Funny how everything seems to repeat itself eventually.
