Subject: Weird Al's new cd comes out in May 20th

Written By: Avril fan on 05/06/03 at 03:30 a.m.

Does anybody know what will be in store on his new CD.

Do you think he'll make a parody   out of 50 Cent, Christina Aguilera, nu metal, Creed, Justin Timberlake, Destiny's Child, Avril Lavigne, etc.

I hoping that he'll satirize Eminem.

I went to his official website, weirdal.com, and it had an announcement/picture on the homepage about the CD. However, I couldn't find a track listing, so I dunno what's gonna be on it. Does anyone know?

As much as I like seeing Avril made fun of, I think we at this site have seen enough parodies of her.

And this may be wishful thinking but maybe i'll contact al or his people through email and show them what ive written here and maybe i'll get a chance to perform. Of course if that happened id have to hope i dont get stage fright since i was a bit nervous when i performed in front of about 400 people.

I wonder why Eminem wouldn't allow Weird Al to make a video out of his "Lose Yourself" parody (titled "Couch Potato")?

Mad TV had video parodies of Eminem and it never tarnished his rap credibility.

weird al's videos will probably make into onto mtv and have a much wider audience that mad tv. And back to my earlier comment i just looked at his tour listingsa and weird al is going to westbury music fair, which is about a 10 minute drive from my house, on my 21st birthday. so theres a pretty good chance that i'll be there and it being my birthday might make my dream of a guest performance slightly less unlikely.

I actually agree that "Weird Al" shouldn't make a video for "Lose Yourself" nor releasing it as the first single.

"Lose Youself" is a serious song.

What would you feel like if "Weird Al" or Mad TV satirized "Imagine" (John Lennon) or "Born To Run" (Bruce Springsteen)?

It wouldn't be right.

"Lose Yourself" is not another poppy song like "Like A Virgin", "Beat It", or "Smells Like...Oh, nevermind

Nirvana allowed Weird Al to make a video for "Smells Like Nirvana". And it's also a masterpiece.

Why is Weird Al so disappointed that Eminem won't give him permission to do a parody video? Doesn't he know the law? According to the Supreme Court (in the decision of the famous "2 Live Crew case"), an artist does not need permission to do a parody. So Weird Al could do it whether Eminem likes it or not.

He should poke fun at posuers like Britney Spears instead.

If he does make a parody video, Eminem will indeed bash Al into his lyrics.

Eminem, a lyricist, with STAYING POWER?  OMG, I'm dyin' laughing here.

Wierd Al has been going strong for over 20 years.  I think it's safe to say Eminem will never have that kind of longevity.  He's the Vanilla Ice of the 00's.

And yeah, he could do the video if he chose because it's a parody, but Al doesn't do that.  He won't parody an artist without their permission.  And most artists are flattered when he asks to parody them.  I think Eminem is a fool to not allow the video.

I have to agree. Yes, Eminem's "Lose Yourself" is serious subject matter, but parody is for making light, for fun, and no one would think less of Eminem's music if Weird Al did a video.

I agree TV9! Weird Al has the respect of the music community with the exception of one which was Ahmish Paradise (Coolio's Gangsta's paradise) The record co said that it was ok to do the parody, but Coolio was ticked. Wierd Al sent him a full apology letter but has yet to hear a reply. Even Nirvana said they didnt know they had made it till Weird Al asked to do a parody of thier song.

As for Eminem, I believe what comes around goes around. He has been making an Arse out of himself speaking out on other people. I have seen several parodys on him from the web. One of which has Dr. Dre speaking into his ear on what to say LOL and the other "Will the real slim shady just give up"

Eminem is not the Vanilla Ice of the 2000's!!!

And MTV BANNED Vanilla Ice in 1999!!!

Eminem will never be a butt of jokes and grew up in a hostile lifestyle with a deadbeat mother & bullies at school.

He's like a Bob Dylan of my generation.

So, Weird Al was around for 20 some years, that's because he's a parody artist.
And he's not a good parody artist anymore since her put out his ill fated "UHF".  :P

You'd be betting wrong then.  I dislike Eminem because he can't seem to do anything without trying to offend someone.  So he had a hard life.  Big deal.  LOTS of people have.  He's nothing special.

You think anyone here cares who MTV banned?  MTV is a shell of what it once was, and personally I feel that if MTV says someone isn't good enough for them, then that someone is OK by me.  When you're dealing with the crap MTV shows now, Eminem certainly does fit in.

Eminem IS the butt of jokes.  Or just the butt.  Either way, it fits.

You do realize how lame your comment about UHF was, right?  The movie is considered a cult classic, and was produced before some of his most popular parodies.  Kinda shoots that theory down, doesn't it?  20 years of remaining popular doing what Al does is definitely longevity.

Eminem will go the way of Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, et al.  In 20 years, you may remember the name, if you're lucky.  I see your scenario in 20 years as the kid laughing along with Al at the humor, and not dealing with Eminem because it sounds childish and immature.  Skills?  What talent?  ANYONE can offend.

BTW, Al doesn't have a perm.  It's natural.  And I won't diss any artist for their political views.  I defended the Dixie Chicks.

"UHF" was a dumb movie. A "cult" classic.
Yeah right, so bad that even the Raliens wouldn't watch it.
"Weird Al" just tried sooo hard to be like Mel Brooks, but he ain't Mel Brooks.

BTW, Eminem is not another cookie cutter MTV teeny bopper act like Britney Spears & N'Sync.

That's like comparing Public Enemy & NWA to New Kids On The Block & Debbie Gibson.
All of them have disbanded, but Public Enemy & NWA are still admired and influenced while MTV looks at Debbie & New Kids as if they never existed.

Subject: Re: Weird Al's new cd comes out in May 20th

Written By: ThunderVamp9 on 05/10/03 at 03:28 p.m.

MTV looks at nearly ALL the acts that made it big as if they never existed!  If you're getting your idea of what constitutes good music strictly because MTV approves of it, you are missing out on a LOT.  You must like being spoon-fed your music.

Eminem is MTV's flavor of the day.  When this style of music is no longer popular, or what MTV deems you should be hearing, they'll be acting like THEY never existed either.  NWA and Public Enemy admired and influences?  ONLY to the acts still appearing on MTV.  But that's what you like to hear, more power to you.  Rest assured, when the public decides they've had enouh, these acts, including Eminem, will go the way of the do-do.  They're riding the crest is all, same as the hair bands of the late 80's.

And seriously, the Raelians?  They don't like it so it's no good?  Get real.  I'm laughing at you now.

BTW, I don't watch MTV.
I mostly watch "Rap City" on BET & dramas.
And MTV is now crap.
Even BET plays more videos than Muck Television.

Not everyone has the same taste of music.

I liked rap since MTV featured Adam Curry, Down Town Julie Brown, "Headbanger's Ball" and, one of my all time favorite shows, "Yo! MTV Raps".

Now it's all shows and only a few talented rappers like DMX, Nas, and Eminem are out there.

That's because Em is not afraid to push buttons and expressing himself.
"Weird Al" is just a coward. If I were him, I would make the video whether Em likes it or not.

Unlike "Weird Al", Em doesn't care what others think.
And that makes him an artist.

"Weird Al" is probably afriad that he'll get sued or become a subject in one of Em's raps.

Actually RSS he does, in a past interview they asked him how is he handleing his fame. He stated that he cant stand it, he cant even go outside to play basketball anymore, that someone would Fing recognize him and Fing ask him for stuff, or that someone would Fing want to kick his arse. When asked why they wanted to do this to him, Eminem stated from all the Fing stuff that he said about others in his songs. Then the interviewer implied that hey you made your own nest, now lay in it, Eminem stated he couldnt deal with it. LOL Too funny!!!  :o The interviewer then had to switch tact and ask about his daughter... Ahh the weight of responcibility  ;D

Added: he also stated that he one of the reasons he couldnt handle the fame and "fortune"(laugh) is that everything now is fast forward these days. Things are happening too fast for him.  He cant handle everything that is demanded or said of him.  :'( ;D

"Wierd Al" NEVER MADE a controversial song/video.
Plus, he's not even an innovator.

Sorry, "Weird Al" is just pop music's answer to Mel Brooks.

Ok, I can understand a person admiring someone who is "shocking" or that you can relate to, nothing wrong with that and more power to you.

But I don't think you are very familiar with Weird Al, he is an innovator as far as parodies go. He has been around for a looooonnng time and many people enjoy his work.

There is nothing wrong with comedy, and I can tell you now that Weird Al, though he may be "Mel Brooks" as you state, has made millions laugh without calling someone a b*tch.  :-/

Since when does a requirement of being good include having a controversial song or video?  That is one of the most inane remarks I've ever read here....

Sorry, sex & violence sells.
If "South Park" were to be like all "clean", it wouldn't have been a hit.

Plus, none of my friends like "Weird Al".

Want some great statire music, listen to Tenacious D.
They're way funnier and better song writers compared to "Weird Al".  ;D

's all good. Listen to what you like. And I will continue to listen to what I like! Sorry, I am just not much on rap. Or cussing every 2 seconds.

If Iwant to hear that I will break out my old 2 Live Crew.  :-/ They were doing it way before Eminem.

I am familiar with him.

Just like Michael Jackson & Madonna, his work became mediocre in the early to mid 1990's then started to become awful towards the new millennium. Now is just nostalgia fodder.
And nobody cares for his new material.

Who wants to listen to Madonna's new album? NOBODY!

Years from now, Eminem will be looked upon as a legend like Run DMC & Kurtis Blow.

Eminem is our generation's Dylan!  Yes!

And Avril is our Joni Mitchell and John Mayer is our Buddy Holly and Good Charlotte are our Led Zeppelin!  Jennifer Lopez is our Aretha Franklin!  Linkin Park are our Rolling Stones!

But seriously, responding to RSS:
Just because controversy sells doesn't make it a good thing.  You keep saying how much controversy Eminem has caused while just assuming that controversy makes him good.
And to everyone else, you keep saying how much controversy caused while just assuming that controversy makes him bad.
Weird Al has taken a dip in quality in recent years, yes, but Tenacious D still suck and suck hard.
Most people here hate MTV and any attempts to bring it into the conversation will only sink your argument.
I do agree that the Vanilla Ice comparisons are out of line though.  I mean, calling Eminem the new Vanilla Ice is soooo '99.

Woah, I've missed two whole pages of stuff...

anyways, just a few thoughts:

-Re: "MTV loves Em"...MTV...erm, sucks. Liking music simply for the fact that it's popular, or that your friends like it (i.e, "None of my friends like Weird Al"), is pretty lame. A lot of my friends hate nu metal, but one of my favorite bands is Linkin Park. While I acknowledge that nu metal act Limp Bizkit sucks, MTV disagrees with me obviously, but I'm not listening to their music because MTV tells me to.

-You mentioned MTV's 25 Lame list. This list was from 1999 - Em was just starting to get big. "The Real Slim Shady", "Stan", "Without Me", "Cleaning Out My Closet", "Lose Yourself", "Sing For The Moment", and "Superman" all came out after then.

- While I agree that Eminem has lyrical talent with songs like "Lose Yourself" and "Cleanin Out My Closet" (he's probably my favorite rapper as far as lyrics go other than Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda), Weird Al has just as much talent. On Al's last album, he had an ELEVEN minute song, all lyrics. On the new album, he wrote a homage to Bob Dylan, in which all the lyrics are palindromes (words that are spelled the same forwards and backwards). Tell me that is not talent.

- Sex, violence, and controversy does sell. But doesn't talent matter more than sales? Do you go buying an album because it's #1 on the charts, or would you rather buy some unknown's album that has the best music you've ever heard?

I'm done for now. :P

Word on everything you said. Avril, John Mayer, Good Charlotte - the talent is just amazing . But why the comment about Linkin Park? I'm a big LP fan and certainly know they're no Rolling Stones. But I like. :D

BTW, I watch BET. Yes I watch MTV, but not a lot.

So I don't like "Weird Al". Well, nobody can force me to like it.

I'm not trying to force people to like Eminem.
I happen to be a fan of his material.

Not everybody find "Weird Al" funny.
I only find him irritating and only liked a few parodies from him.

..and here I thought you were gone from this thread  ;D LOL RSS we won't hold it against you that love Eminem. But you have to admit with all that he does, he leaves himself open to more parodys than most artists. I went on WinMX and have found 3 parodys of "will the real slim shady" as  well as 2 for "Lose yourself" I have yet to try some of his other songs, but will probably find more.

I will definately check out Weird Al's new CD.  :D

As for the video that Eminem wouldn't let him do for "Couch Potato"

Remember the Mad TV Eminem parody that was about current TV shows?
That's probably what the "Couch Potato" video would've been like. Except that It'll be similar to the song Al is singing to instead of "Without Me".

My favorite "Weird Al" videos are "Smells Like Nirvana", "Eat It", "Dare To Be Stupid", "Ricky",  and "Headline News".
And "UHF" is one of the funniest movies I've seen.
Not to forget that one of the cast members is Michael Richards, who later play "Kramer" on "Seinfeld".

I love Weird Al. I think he is extremely intelligent, and a very brillient artist. However, I do tend to agree with RSS on one issue-that his lastest stuff isn't as good as his earlier stuff-BUT that is because the stuff he has to work with isn't that good to begin with. The quality of art has to depend on the quality of the material.

BTW-I think he looks great without the mustash and the long hair.

Umm Mr.X you should read the whole thread before you post, He is letting Wierd Al make parodies of his songs (in this case its "Loose Yourself"), but he wont let him make a video of his parody, says it will detract from the serious songs meaning.
