Subject: Support the troops

Written By: Don_Carlos on 05/20/03 at 01:14 p.m.

With all the hype about supporting our troops, I wonder how people feel about the fact that Mr Bush is cutting vetran's benefits and the Vetrans Adminstration budget.  My Dad, a vetran of the Normandy invasion and now 83 years old, has to wait SIX MONTHS to see a doctor at the VA hospital in LA, and my partner gets no dental coverage from them, and very little else after retireing with 70% disabitity as a sargent in the Air "farce".  Is this "supporting our troops"?  I, for one, think not  :'(

You are right, DC, that is not supporting the troops.  The Vets fought for our freedom and they should be treated right.  It is too bad that congress won't listen to the people and veto this.  Then again, they let this kind of stuff through and the people seem to forget when it comes time to re elect them.  It happens here in Utah all the time. >:(

Dagwood and DC I agree with you both.

From my experience with different VA's (not personally of course, but with several veteran family members and friends), I have yet to see a VA that is positively comparible to a traditional hospital.  And this is nothing new, its been that way for decades.

Much needs to be done to improve the VA's in America.

I know first hand how bad the VA can be. It is not because the VA is very uncaring, it is just that they can only do so much with so little. I really don't blaim the VA for this. I blaim this admistration. Part of the "agreement" between Uncle Sam and the vet-once you put in your years, you are going to be taken care of for life. Now, Uncle Sam is going back on that agreement. It seems that some VA facilities will only treat vets of lower income. Regardless of how much money someone makes, a vet is a vet is a vet. They are ENTITLED to care by the VA. I used to have to travel quite a distance to get to the VA (about an hour and a half-one way). That is not as easy task concidering that I don't drive. I was not the only one. This was the only VA facility within a 100 mile radius. And if you are at the far corner of that radius, you are s.o.l. I feel lucky because they just opened a liason office close to me.

I really do believe that this admistration is breaking promises made. Yes, they made a big show when Jessica Lynch (is that her name?) came home. That was great but at the same time they were cutting benefits that Jessica would have been entitled to. So much for supporting the troops.

And I agree with all of you.

Veterans deserve much, much better.

This is probably what our present troops will have to look forward to in the future as well.

Cat, no offense, but the VA's have been underfunded and understaffed for many decades.  This administration has only been in office 2.5 years, so placing all the blame on them is a bit unfair.

Just as I wouldn't blame Clinton, Bush Sr. Reagan, Carter, etc etc for this problem, you can't blame it all on the current administration for a problem that has been going on for so long.

I understand that it is not ALL this administrations doing but they are the ones who can remedy the situtation at the moment. Unfortunately they are contributing to the problem rather than solving it. I blaim each administration when it is in power who does not correct the situtation and adds to the injustice. At this point in time, it just happens to be the Bush Administration.

While I agree with 80's that we can't blaim this administration for what past ones have done, we CAN blaim them for the CUT THEY ARE MAKING to vets bennies in order to give BIG tax cuts to their corporate friends.  As you all know, I opposed this recent war, and from what I read my predictions as to its result are not off base, but the front line guys who only did what was asked of them deserve better from this country, as do ALL our vets, my dad,CAT and Davester too.  I have to ask again, is this "compassionate conservatism"?  If so, it sucks, IMHO.

I would gladly give up a tax cut for our veterans. Wow. So many people are agreeing. Why is Bush cutting funding again? It isn't to gain votes, that's for sure.
