Subject: Help!  Need song suggestions....

Written By: Spike on 05/26/03 at 10:31 a.m.

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about auditioning for the Australian Idol thing (yes, I know it's sad, but hey, it could be fun) and I need some suggestions for a song to sing, one that sounds good acapella(sp?).  I'm looking for songs in the 80's, 90's or 00's and figured that you guys could help me out..... ;D

Suggestions being considered in no particular order (if it's not on here either I don't know it or can't sing it):

Careless Whisper - George Michael
La Isla Bonita, Like A Paryer - Madonna
One Of Us - Joan Osbourne
Total Eclipse Of The Heart - Bonnie Tyler
Sacrifice - Elton John
Ain't No Sunshine - Deni Hines' version (suggested by a friend at TAFE 2day)  :)

LOL  ;D, somehow I don't think rap would be such a good idea.....I think I would be able to ruin it somehow   ;)
Perhaps something not too cheesy, I don't think Barbara Streisand or Cher will work for me too well (I probably should have specified that earlier, d'oh!).
To give you a bit of an idea of what I'm looking for, I'm considering Abby Dobson's "Ask For More" and "Black Velvet" by Alannah Myles at the moment....

Thanks for the suggestions guys, keep them coming!  :D

Perhaps some AC/DC or Rush ;)...

"Lean On Me"...a Janet Jackson song...Burt Bacharach "I'll Never Fall In Love Again"...."I got a brand new pair of rollerskates, you got a brand new key... ;D"...George Michael "Careless Whisper"...

Whoa weird!  I could have sworn there were more replies on here, what happened Hairspray?

Thanks for the suggestions Junior, I dunno 'bout ACDC or the Janet song, but I really love that George Michael one!

I can't help ya' there, but I can give you some suggestions for tunes. Judges seem to lean towards the soft/slower stuff, but I tried to add a couple with a bit of beat.

I think these would all sound good without the music:

1) Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The Heart

2) Cher - I Found Someone

3) Hall & Oates - You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling

4) Howard Jones - No One Ever Is To Blame

5) Phil Collins - Against All Odds

6) Divinyls (sp?) - I Touch Myself

7) Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever

8) Elton John - Sacrifice

9) Madonna - Like A Prayer (The 12" album had an acapella version in it!)

10) Kelly Clarkson - A Moment Like This (Hey! Who cares if it was done by an American Idol?! ;D )

Edited to add: You may have to play around with a few of these tunes to change the gender references.

My oldest got a part in South Pacific summer stock singing Madonna's "Isla Bonita", it's got a good beat and you can dance to it.  Also reminds me of Puerto Rico - "all of nature wild and free".  Good luck with your audition.

Are you actually a good singer Spike? And what image are you going for?

I only ask because the answers will of course influence your choice of song. Anything by Geri Halliwell would be a safe bet because she has a very limited vocal range and her songs are picked deliberately so as not to expose that too much. I've heard several girl singers do "Mi Chico Latino" and make it sound very good, better than Geri in fact.

I was gonna suggest Joan Jett ot Blondie, but it seems like those AI judges like the sappy songs, so maybe some Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Jewel or Joan Osbourne?  :P

Or you could go balls out & do some Ozzy Osbourne!  ;)

'Tis cool, just thought I might've said something I shouldn't have when I saw the edit under my 2nd post....then I realised the quote from the post before mine was missing, as was the actual post!  Ah well... ;D

All these I know and like, with the exception of Kelly Clarkson's song (which is a pity, 'cause if I knew it, it might earn me some brownie points with the judges :)). In fact, spooky thing, I was listening to #3 just a couple of hours ago.....

LOL, I don't have the balls to sing that one, I'd have to be pretty drunk!  ;D

Sorry for double posting, but I haven't figured out how to put quotes from different ppl in the same reply yet, so bear with me please.  :)

Um, to that question, I'd like to think the answer is yes, otherwise I wouldn't even think of auditioning  ;D.  I'd like to think I can hold a tune anyway, but my range isn't too bad (Dunno 'bout official notes and stuff, but let's say what I can sing ranges from "I Alone" by Live to "Bring Me To Life" by Evanescence).

As for the image, hoping to avoid the totally soppy stuff, 'cause I think that's what the judges will hear day in, day out (and I don't think it would go down too well combined with my hair colour...), and I'm definitely not going for the "Britney" look, but I want something that will show off my voice a little.....Arrghh, I hope this at least kinda makes sense  :D

Princessofpop:  LOL about the Ozzy Osbourne thing, I think I need to find some balls before I could go "balls out"  ;D

Did you have any particular Mariah or Celine songs in mind? (and please don't say "My Heart Will Go On")
