Subject: US Highway 666 ("Devil's Highway") no more...

Written By: 80sRocked on 06/03/03 at 07:51 p.m.

This is pretty interesting:
------------------------------------------------------------

U.S. 666 officially renamed U.S. 491

SANTA FE (AP) - The Devil's Highway is no more.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials has changed the number of U.S. 666 to U.S. 491, the New Mexico Highway and Transportation Department announced Monday.

Transportation officials from three states applied for a name change to the highway, which runs 194 miles from Gallup north through southwestern Colorado and west to Monticello, Utah.

In the Bible, the Book of Revelations says 666 is the ''number of the beast,'' usually interpreted as Satan or the Antichrist, and the highway was often called ''the Devil's Highway.''

Highway and Transportation Secretary Rhonda Faught had said earlier this year that the number's ''negative connotation'' was one officials didn't want associated with the state because it discouraged tourism and area economic development.

The highway department announced in January it would spend $7.5 million to design improvements to the highway and widen the road to four lanes between Gallup and Shiprock.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is a nonprofit agency that sets national highway and transportation standards, including the renumbering of federal highways

When I lived in L.A., I had a phone number 666-3535 ! I hated it ! >:( I found out too late that I didn't have to accept it when they issued it, I could have requested they give me a different one. But what did I know ? I just hated that phone number.

I had been with someone once who checked out at a register and the receipt showed $66.66 - totally freaked the person out.

Indeed, not the best number to be popping up. ;)

I know what you mean.  I went through a weird week a few years back, and for some reason, 666 kept popping up.  I'll never forget it.

For example:  on day 1, my digital thermometer reading was 66.6 degrees.  Day 2, my odometer on my new car was 666.6 miles when for some reason I just happened to glance down at it.  Then on Day 3, my credit card bill was $666.xx!  no joke.  I have remembered that week for all this time because it has come up in conversation so many times whenevr me of my friends/family seems to be having bad luck.

Wouldn't leaving it at 666 improve tourism? People can be weird about the number, but I think others might want to drive on it to say they traveled on the "Devil's Highway". Oh well, at perhaps there's a highway 777 out there somewhere.

Just imagine if the highway would've remained 666...imagine all the souls that have been damned and would've been damned just from traveling this road.  How could this road have been allowed to bear the mark-'o-the-beast for so long?  It really is un-American...

My hat's off to The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.  They have snatched souls from the gaping jaws of Baphomet, and have done this country a great service.

  Satan must be pissed...

Tee hee... Does this mean that sales of AC/DC's Highway To Hell album are going to slide?

But what's in a name, anyway?  If it actually is the Devil's Highway, then changing its name ain't going to make a damned bit of difference

I thought the number partly depended on whether the road ran north-south or east-west.  One should be and even number and the other odd.  Or is that just in some cities?

PUHLEEZE!  I can understand the point Dag made about the signs, but come on.  It will still be known as the "Devil's Highway" to anyone who has ever driven on it or heard of it.  It's kinda like the 13th floor thing, if you are in a hotel that doesn't list the 13th floor, but your room is, say, 1410, you are still technically on the 13th floor.  My phone number used to be XXX-1666 and I never had a problem with it.  It was easy to remember ;D

If there isn't, there ought to be. That would give creedence to the saying "cold as hell"...;D :P ;D

Actually, the reference in the bible is for the identification of the antichrist. In the Greek alphabet, letters were also used to denote numbers. So, if you write the name of the antichrist (which will be an actual, flesh and blood person) in Greek and add them together, you will come up with the total of 666.

So it really is just a number in any other case...nothing evil about numbers unless you're flunking math.

I never understood that, either.  Made no sense to me at all.  Then again, there is a bldg here in SLC that has a 13th floor and the most horrible law firm on the planet rents it.  Coincidence?  I think not. ;)

In ancient Greek. Revelations is in the New Testament. Was that first written in Greek, or Latin?

There has been much debate over the translation of 666.  Some suggest the number, when translated from it's Greek numerical equivalent represents 'Neron Kaisar' or 'Nero Caesar' first persecutor of the Xians as many believed he would return from the dead to further torment their fledgeling religion.

I have no opinion either way, at the moment.

Let's get one thing straight, 666 means Satin of course. 333 means God right? And 999 means Lucifer or something?

I agree, RnRf.

I first saw US 666 in the movie "Natural Born Killers". I thought this was made up for the film and didn't know if it really existed until I read the article from this thread. I'm glad they made the change, even though the only reason to fear this number is if it is on you. No Joke! :-X

Nope. 666 is the mark of the Anti-Christ, Satan's earthly representative. 333 means three hundred and thirty three and 999 is 1000 minus 1. God doesn't have a number, and "Lucifer" means the "Bright One" or the "Light Giver" -- this was Satan's name before he was cast from Heaven.

thats true.

If you want a simple Hollywood explanation, rent the movie "The Omen, Part II".

In it, Damian (the Anti-Christ child) realises that he has the number 666 imprinted on his scalp and that he is the true Anti-Christ.

Its a really good movie(I recommend Part I, the original,  however). ;)

However, if you want the real explanation, read Revelations chapter 13.

Actually...
The number 13 is only considered unlucky because of Christianity.  Before Christians, many pagans considered 13 to be a lucky number.  The Christian church, as with many pagan beliefs, changed this to separate itself from the pagans.
Hence, there are 13 witches in a coven and, funnily enough, Jesus had 12 disciples!

...or read "Good Omens" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.  Come to think of it, read it anyway, if you haven't :-)

Heinlein came up with 666 meaning (6^6)^6 as the number of possible dimensions/parallel universes in "Number of the Beast"

PS This one came up elsewhere: 666 is the octal representation of file access permissions rw-rw-rw- in unix...

That is quite interesting about the #13...I did not know that.

One thing I do know...Jesus had 12 disciples to correspond  with the 12 tribes of Israel. When Judas Iscariot hanged himself, and after Jesus ascended to heaven, the remaining 11 disciples (now called apostles) chose another to replace Judas. His name was Matthias, and he is sometimes refered to as the 13th disciple.

Actually, in the bible, the number 7 symbolizes the number of perfection, or completion.

Revelation describes Christ as "...a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth."

The seven horns symbolize omnipotence, the seven eyes omnipresence.

In Revelation 13 the number six is said to be the number of man, just one short of the number of completion....

And that, brothers and sisters, is today's bible lesson. Please feel free to leave what you can in the offering plate. A dollar, a quarter, a half-eaten twinkie... :-*
