Subject: Wal-Mart Gets even More conservative

That's right the store that you can't buy explicit cd's, stuff, FHM, and Maxim is now targeting woman's mags.  I am sure kids learn a lot of bad stuff by seeing a Cosmo cover in the check out isle.  ::)

What about Blender magazine, too?  ;) ::)  (see: Jewel thread.)

Dumb questions, but what are FHM and Maxim?

Oh and I know what explicit CDs are  :P  :)

Not sure what FHM is but Maxim is a, um, "magazine for men" ;D  I don't really read it for the articles, but it's not toooooo explicit :)

Months ago Barbie's friend Midge got pregnant. Lift Midge's dress up and she's got a big belly. Open her belly and you can take her baby out. I know, it does sound graphic but the doll is really cute and done in good taste. Well Walmart pulled the doll from their shelves because apparently too many customers were complaining. These same customers were looking at the doll thinking "Barbie is pregnant. Barbie isn't even married. What's that teaching our impressionable kids?". Well if the idiots would learn to read, it was Midge NOT Barbie, and right next to Midge on the shelf sits her husband. People will complain about anything if you give them a chance to...and if you listen to them. Complaints about mag covers? Give me a friggin break. Barely-there clothing is in and sex sells. Forgive me for saying so, but Walmart shoppers don't exactly seem to be the type to be interested in cutting edge fashion or interested in what collors are flooding the cat walk. Sheesh, quit complaining and pay attention to your kid who is running up and down the isle unattended with a broom in his hand pretending it's an airplane...

Carrilynn, I think you just opened a pandora's box on the horrors of Walmart. :D

I totally agree with you on that statement.  I absolutely hate going into Walmart simply because of what you said.  I would be more than willing to drive an extra hour to go to a Target or Kmart, just to avoid the Walmart located just across the street from me.

Hey 80sRocked...so you know what I'm referring to lol. If there's one thing I hate more then giving into the minority (as Walmart does) it's children left unattended in stores. Some behave themselves, most don't. If one of these parents lost their child to abduction or accident because of unsupervision they'd be the first to cry negligence or place blame on someone else. I tell you, those Walmart shoppers! They better keep an eye on those kids or else they'll sneak over to the mags to catch a glimpse of a little boob-age on those trendy fashion magazine covers. Oh the horror LOL.

FHM is an Australian men's magazine - standing, I think, for "For Him Magazine."  Dunno if Im completely right on that - better ask an Aussie male.

I don't "do" Walmart for many reasons. For one, they move into areas and outprice the small businesses. They will sell guns but not Cheryl Crow's CDs. They use sweatshop labor. (Well, I know other businesses uses that too.) That is just a few reasons. And now this. That is just one more thing to add to the list.

OK, so they sell guns, but they won't sell CDs with bad words, pictures of women or references to sex.

Is it just me or does this sound like the Taliban regime?  ::)

I like Best Buy.  Lots of cool toys.  But they are getting sued by dozens of celebrities for unauthorized use of images or something like that, which probably translates to a lotta money :-/

I wonder what the Minnesota Wild thought about getting humiliated in that one commercial...although that cute wife in the commercial had a wicked slapshot, nice form ;D

Kenny, do you by chance work for Best Buy? :D(just joking)

But seriously, my biggest problem with Best Buy is when you go in, at my 2 stores anyway, you are immediately swarmed with "associates".  Not to mention the ones in the aisles taking polls and surveys.  When I go into a store, I like to be left alone to look around, and if I need help, I will get help.

That reminds me of Old Navy... which by the way, I almost refuse to go in anymore simply because of the music... I am sorry, but if you would turn off that loud crap, I might actually want to come into your store.  Until that happens, I'll just have my parents pick out clothes for me there while I relax in Barnes and Nobel next door  8)

No store is perfect. Wal-Mart can cover up the covers of all their magazines if they want to... I mean, it is their right to display merchandise in the way they see fit, or to sell or not sell any particular item. I just wish they would stop selling so much crap made in China!! (Which, again, is their right to do.)

Ah ha!  No wonder.

I am to the point where if I even see one of the workers coming towards me I just say "no I'm just looking" before they get a chance to bother me. >:(

I wish they would have a T-Shirt or something that said "Leave me alone I'm just looking!".  I would wear it in Best Buy, Circuit City, Sears, etc etc etc. :D

In Utah almost all of the stores have covers for the magazines.  It started with Cosmo and had graduated to them all.  This would be nothing new to us.

I just started working at Wal-Mart here in my town that opened up not to long ago.  And out of all the people I have talked to enjoy working there so I hope I will to.  But still you want to talk about a very disorginized (sp?) store.  I work in the meat department and its not to bad there but over in produce and other areas of the store that have practically no one working there and the guy who does the ordering for produce doesnt seem to know what he is doing.  I mean for 5 hours on Saturday they only had 1 person working produce.  Most of that is because they have people working in the mornings but from about 5pm on they hardly schedule anyone and it really slows things down.  But the associates that do work at the same store I do seem very friendly with customers talking to them all the time and will go out of the way to help them when they can, so on and so forth, only problem is there isnt always enough of the associates to help because the store hasnt hired enough.

Speaking of Best Buy, Has anyone noticed that they have gotten a lmore expensive in the last couple of years?

I remember a cd at Bestbuy used to be around $12.  Now it seems like they are 14-15. Plus their DVDs seem overpriced as well.

They may also reports your purchases to the FBI, depending on what you buy, especially if you use a credit card.  A student of mine ordered an academic book from one, payed with a credit card, and later requested his FBI file (Freedom of Information Act - go to FBI web site and request yours - you may be surprised  ;) - Big Brother IS watching you  :o.  The only tyhing in it was a copy of his credit card recipt for that book.

In other news  ;D  Last night there was a debate about this on CNN

Sorry 80's if I confused you.  The "other news" I refered to was about Wal Mart.

And no, I'm not naive, I'm outraged that my reading preferences are being monitored.  Does not "freedom of the press" imply freedom to read - without the dampening effect of Big Brother watching over our shoulders?  And to bring it back specifically to W-M, also without my neighbors watching?

PS. no sarcasm or agression intended - just clarification and questions.

Okay, I must be one of the few who actually don't mind WalMart.  They are cheaper (here anyway) than Target on toiletries, diapers, etc.  Plus, their milk is $1.54/gallon, compared to $3.09 at Jewel and $2.83 at Cub Foods, which are both right across the street from it.  And, none of the WalMart's I've ever been in have sold men's magazines.  I was just there yesterday and Cosmo isn't covered  yet.   ;)

Well, it's not being monitored (in Wal-Mart anyway) by the feds or the government, but by the store itself.  Private businesses can do whatever they want.  Of course, if it peeves off the customer, it's their bankroll that's gonna suffer ;)

You may be right, although some (book) stores do cooperate with the FBI by giving them infor on what people buy.  Chain stores like WM may do the same.  I agree that they can sell or not carry anything they choose.

Yes it is.  Walmart uses employes and their families as their models in commercials and their ads.

Cheerleader, I love Walmart, too.  I drive 5 miles to grocery shop there just because of the prices.
