Man needlessly paid sewer bills for 24 years

By Associated Press, 6/11/2003

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — A homeowner who has been paying a monthly sewer bill since 1979 learned after plumbing trouble that he has a septic tank and has never been connected to the city utility.

Donald Griffith went to court Tuesday with a civil lawsuit against the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority, asking for his money to be returned -- with interest.

Griffith, 66, says the utility company has been billing him unfairly since 1979. After his system backed up last year, Griffith said he discovered he has a septic tank, not a sewer connection.

The retired sheet metal and roofing contractor said he tried to work out a deal with FPUA, but the utility turned him down. The company owes him $16,000 in paid bills, the suit claims.

"We tried to resolve this amicably, but that was not possible," said Bud Boudreaux, FPUA utilities director. "If it has to go to court, it has to go to court."

Griffith said FPUA originally agreed to hook his home up to the sewer system and pay him a few thousand dollars for past bills. After Griffith met with an attorney, FPUA took its offer off the table, he said.

Ok wait now, so where was it all going ?? I see it mentioned the words 'backed up' at one point there.Does that mean 24 years of 'stuff' was backed up ?? I don't envy the person who's job it was to un-back it up !?!!

Since '79 - 24 years without having to get his tank pumped?  I guess he hasn't got a family ;-)

My thoughts exactly.  The experts recommend having it emptied every 10 years or so (I think) so after 24 years, NO WONDER it backed up!! ;D

Anyway, I think he should get it back.  If the company had UNDERbilled him, you can bet they would make darned sure they got THEIR money!

All the puns, jokes, and jibes are VERY funny - congrats to you all on you humor.  I just wonder who 80's is considering the idiot, though.  A guy thinks he is connected to the sewer system, pays the monthy bill, and then discovers that he isn't.  Does that make him an idiot?  I think not.  I think I'm connected, and pay the quarterly bill, but I can't prove it, never though to question it.  Looks to me that he is an innocent victim of an innocent bureaucratic error that some fool bureaucrat refuses to rectify.  To me, the "idiot of the day" is the fool who refuses to acknowledge the mistake and rectify it, forcing the issue to court.  I'm not anti government, but I do insist on gov't accountability.

And speaking of Government accountability, how about some of our non-U.S.ian friends starting a thread on the daily idiosies of George W Bush.  I understand that they are much more thoroughly reported in the "foreign" press than they are in the U.S.  For example, George senior's involvement with a certain gold mining company that was sold mining rights to a mine in the U.S. for 10,000 for a mine worth tens of millions.  He now serves as a "consultant" for that company. (reported by a BBC correspondant who'se mane I can't recall.  Heard it on NY public radio while sailing (we do keep in touch).
