Subject: Its official: Political Correctness out of control

Written By: 80sRocked on 06/12/03 at 05:43 p.m.

Its official, a group of Liberal pinheads have officially succeeded in turning our schools into mindless "politcally correct" wastelands.

There's a book out called "The Language Police" by Diane Ravitch, I have ordered mine, and am anxious to read it.

It describes the unbelievable attempt(and success) by the liberal political-correctness freaks trying to butcher school textbooks to "avoid offending anyone".

Here are some examples of what the next generation of school textbooks will be like:

• Women cannot be depicted as caregivers or doing
household chores.
• Men cannot be lawyers or doctors or plumbers.
They must be nurturing helpmates.
• Old people cannot be feeble or dependent; they
must jog or repair the roof.
• A story that is set in the mountains discriminates
against students from flatlands.
• Children cannot be shown as disobedient or in
conflict with adults.
• Cake cannot appear in a story because it is not
nutritious.

No, this is not a joke. >:(

These are just a few of the changes made to textbooks, there are 100's more, and even more to come.

Pathetic. >:(

Here is the Random House official site's synopsis of this book:

I thought it was already a given that political correctness was out of control.

I actually heard about this on Savage's and Hannity's radio shows.  I don't think I saw this kind of literary fascism until I entered high school in 1993.  Wacky, no?

Actually, the book indicts both the left and the right wing.  In addition to the given examples, textbooks won't have mention of ghosts or such because it might lead kids to Satanism.

AAARRRGGHH!  so frustrating! >:( >:(

a few others I heard last night on the news that are included are:

God (too religious)

Founding Fathers (too sexist)

Any reference to Indians in a rural setting or with braided hair (too steroetypical)

Any reference to "non-healthy" foods

Man-made: Manufactured
3rd world: Developing country
Handicapped: Special needs

I got a whole list of ridiculous politically correct BS and I lost it. This is all I remember. They were all very serious.

Both the Right and the Left have their own groups of sensor-monkeys. Don't assume that they're all just a bunch of liberal freaks. There of plenty of people who want our children to grown up in a Pleasantville/Matrix. They don't get that the world isn't like that. Women still cook better than I can. Men still load the car for trips and they still make the egg nog.

I think what ticks me off most with the PC "enforcers" is that their position is that they are always acting on behalf of someone else, someone "vulnerable" - but it's never anybody standing up and saying "I'm offended/hurt/belittled" by this.  And has anybody looked at the flipside of this: the cumulative blandness spreading through the literary world is surely causing increased disinterestedness in books and reading?

Though I think it's the free speech aspect that incenses me most: the thought that somebody else is telling me which words I may or may not use because of an idea that somebody somewhere may take those words out of context and be offended by them...

I knew it was getting out of hand the other day when they were discussing this on the radio.  One lady was offended at the word "manhole cover". ::)

I have to admit, I fail to understand how anyone can take offence at something like that: ISTM an active decision on her part to be offended by something totally inoffensive.  Though "womanhole cover" would probably be worse... ;-)

In Britain, I was surprised as anyone to hear that nobody should sing 'Baa Baa black sheep' (a nursery rhyme) and that nobody could call a 'blackboard' a 'blackboard' because of it's racial overtones.

There's being respectful and then there's being stupid. I would have thought most people would be offended by these neurotic admonishments.

By saying stuff like this, the people in control of this situation are heightening people's conflicts with each other when there should be no need.

My thoughts exactly.  I mean, come on, a black board is called a black board because it is black and a board!  At the company I used to work, we had "White boards".  You know, the one you use the Dry erase markers on?  Was I offended?  Not in the least.

People need to find some bigger things to complain about rather than focusing on "man"holes or "Black"boards.  And, men cannot be depicted as lawyers?  Isn't that rewriting history?  Weren't most of our past presidents lawyers?  Are they going to start lying now?

PUHLEEZE ::)

Won't banning cakes from storybooks offend cakemakers? It could just go on and on. Somebody should tell these "PC regulators" that people are much more likely to be annoyed by their stupid guidelines for "perfect harmony" than offended by the things they're trying to ban in the first place. Whatever happened to common sense? ::)

Years ago when the movie "Mr. Magoo" came out with Leslie Neilson, the National Federation of the Blind was having a fit. I guess they thought that it stereotyped blind people as being bafoons. Personally, I thought that it just stereotyped Leslie Neilson as being a bafoon. I have known people with visual imparements and they all say that same thing, "It is just a stupid movie-who cares."

A few years ago, Enid Blyton had her books butchered because liberalists didn't want the word 'Golliwog' to appear in children's literature.

'Golliwogs' were replaced with Goblins.

The point here is that nobody would have cared what golliwogs were in Britain! We just believed they were just a logo stuck on the top of a jam jar lid or a doll kids cherished! After all the commotion, I don't believe these golliwog logos have been removed from the jam lids either.

So I ask, what was the point?

What are Golliwogs? Why would they be banned? This sounds very weird, very surreal.

I totally agree that both the left and right have taken this political correctness thing much too far.  One thinbg that realy gauls me is that the Texas state school board has so much power in determining what appears in text books.  That may change though, since like other states, Texas will probably not be buying any in the near future - budget cuts you see.

Golliwogs were and are very old dolls and they represented black people. Perhaps they were a little too 'black and white minstrel show' for a lot of people's tastes but nothing was made of it until somebody started reading her books.

Not many people knew of the significance of these dolls and just thought they were nice.

That makes sense to me now.  When I was 8 my step-mother gave me a fairytale book from England.  (She was from there, just moved to California when she got older).  There were quite a few stories with a doll named "Golli", he looked like a little black doll to me.  I wish I still had that book, it was great.
