Recall movement picking up steam

That's right, citizens of California!  Are you tired of shady ol' Gray Davis running our precioius state into the ground?  If so, it's time to A) register to vote and B) find the nearest petitioner in your area and sign the petition to recall him or C) become a petitioner yourself!

As of a few days ago, supporters of the recall effort have pulled together around 700000 signatures.  We need 900000.  We have a more than two months left until the September 2 deadline to get this thing on the ballot and get this so-called governor out of office before California gets any worse.

This site is one of the centerpieces of the recall movement, so go here to find out all you need to know.  We're so close!  Who says the people don't have a voice anymore?  Sign today!  :D

Oh, and tomorrow, look for "Recall Gray Davis" to the tune of "Viva Las Vegas" by Rice Cube & Watt Daddy, here on AmIRight!!!  ;D

with all the insanity happening in and coming out of CA the last few years, I'm surprised this hasn't happened already!

On a side note:  I read in the article that Dianne Feinstein might be a potential candidate?  Isn't that like replacing a psychotic maniac with...a psychotic maniac with a different name? :D

I don't think she stands a good shot of winning the governor's seat...but then again, if she gives up her Senate seat to run, it'll leave it open and finally we'll be rid of her at least  ::)

It is my understanding that whoever wins between the Democrats (I heard Feinstein, too) and the Republican (?) would appoint Feinstein's successor.  So if she were to become governor, we probably won't like her appointment.  But I strongly agree with Rice Cube that Gray Davis does not know how to govern California.  I have collected signatures on a petition that I am going to mail this week.

Does the Indiana Constitution have a new amendment to allow recalls?

Hey, if any of you have relatives (hopefully registered voters) in CA, give them a heads-up about the recall movement in case they've been under a rock for the past couple months ;D

It was no secret where Davis' leadership of the state was heading before and during the last election.  Why was he voted into office yet again?  In retrospect, there was no shortage of warning signals.  He was the lesser of two evils...um...yeah.

This recall reeks of interest opportunism and I think, in the end, it will do more harm than good.  Let the man finish his term.

I mean, hell...has anyone ever had second thoughts about someone they voted for?  'Be careful what you ask for' is all I can say.

The dude that started all of this has spent 800,000 dollars of his own money to get Davis out of office. The guy is basically trying to buy his way into office. He is no better than Davis......

I usually don't trust politicians any farther than I can flick them ;D

But as for this being a publicity stunt...maybe true, but I have followed this since it was suggested as early as December, and the movement was originated in the San Francisco Bay Area long before Darryl Issa came along and pledged money.  As for him buying his way into office, if that were true I hope he'd put more than $800k into the effort because that's peanuts ;)

There's no guarantee he'll win either.  Hell, I can put my name on the ballot and drive all over California and make friends REALLY quick.  I could be the next CA governor.  Scary, huh?  :D

So why do we always insist that democracy is the best system of government there is/can be?  You end up having to choose between on group of people you don't trust, and another who you like even less...

On-topic: I must admit that a "recall" election seems to be much more fun than the ususal: $3,500 and 10k signatures is all that's required to get on the list of candidates...

I read in the article that Arnie Schwarzenegger is a possible candidate... now that would make for a total recall, so to speak ;-)

Who else might run... given that this is California, there must be no end of high-profile people who could be persuaded -  Steve Martin, anyone?  Does Bill Cosby live out that way?

As I understand the issues - from the east coast - Republicans in the legislature are refusing to raise taxes proposed in Davis's budget and CA is still reeling from the Enron-Bush induced "energy crisis".  I just wonder, given the reapportionment struggle in Texas (stage managed by Tom DeLay) if you Californians are not being manipulated from Washington.  From what I read, Gray Davis isn't the problem.  The problem is that CA is being punished for voting for Gore in 2000.  Think about it.

California Über Alles

I am Governor Jerry Brown
My aura smiles
And never frowns
Soon I will be president…

Carter power will soon go away
I will be Führer one day
I will command all of you
Your kids will meditate in school

California Über Alles
Über Alles California

Zen fascists will control you
100% natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face
Close your eyes, can't happen here
Big Bro' on white horse is near
The hippies won't come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay

California Über Alles
Über Alles California

Now it is 1984
Knock knock at your front door
It's the suede/denim secret police
They have come for your uncool niece

Come quietly to the camp
You'd look nice as a drawstring lamp
Don't you worry, it's only a shower
For your clothes here's a pretty flower…

DIE on organic poison gas
Serpent's egg's already hatched
You will croak, you little clown
When you mess with President Brown

California Über Alles
Über Alles California

Thats a good point.

I know a lot of poeple think this is just a ploy by those evil Republicans to kick the idiot Gov Davis out, but, when only 20% of your entire state approves of the job you're doing, a recall is to be expected, no matter what party it involves.

I was watching the news today and they mentioned the recall effort. The chief aid to Governor Davis said they may challange the pettitions. According to the governors aid, they claim the republicans brought in bus loads of covicted felons from prisions and put them up in hotels so they could sign the recall. Anyone hear anything about this?

Modified to add: I do not understand how the recall works, my state has nothing like it. The news story also said the petition does not have nearly as many signatures as the second best candidate in the race. If you know you will have 30% against you in any race (opponents base) regardless of what party you are in, then how would you stop frivolous recalls?

This was a highly organized effort.  As such, the organizers made sure that all petition gatherers were registered voters, and all signatures were confirmed and authenticated before sending them into the county registrars, who in turn are sending them into Sac-town for final authentication.  The only obstacles are the secretary of state and the traditional Gray Davis smear campaign.  The secretary of state has been dealt with because this recall has been done by the book.  As in, the state constitution said the recall had to be done a certain way, and so they did it as worded.

I don't think recalls are frivolous.  The politicos have to screw up pretty bad to ruffle enough feathers to get the petitions signed.  Considering this is the first gubernatorial recall in California (maybe national) history, I'd say Davis screwed up pretty bad, eh?  ;)  I think the constitutional provision is worded well enough that it's easy enough to oust a bad official if the right amount of people thinks he sucks, but not easy enough that Uncle Joe in Turlock and his family of 8 can go up to Sacto with a shotgun and execute the governor ;D

No offense to folks in Turlock ;D  Just the first Yosemite-Valley-ish town I could think of :)

I don't think it'll be quite THAT low.  I think the Lt. Governor deliberately did this to buy enough time for negative spin, so that Davis can "fight" to stay governor.  That is, sad to say, the only tactic he has in his bag of tricks.  The Lt.G also said something about his authority only allowing him to authorize the recall election, but not to authorize an election for a successor, but I think the CA constitution is pretty clear that the recall AND the succession should be on the same ballot.  Stall tactic, nothing more.

There is absolutely no guarantee that a Republican will end up being the successor, and it is almost likely that a Democrat would swoop in for a nomination when Davis is down enough and ripe for backstabbing.  CA being a heavily Democratic state now, I wouldn't be surprised.  The hope is that whoever the successor is will be better than Davis, so I really don't care one way or the other, as long as he's out.

Come on. Many of those "illegal aliens" work jobs that you would never take. They have some of the least desirable jobs under the worst conditions. And why do they do it? Most likely to give their children oppertunity. Sounds to me like they have taken the American dream to heart.

Plus, health care is a most basic need. How could you turn someone away from getting medical health? If they knocked on your door and needed help, would you slam the door shut? It is humaine to help others.

I expect Davis to do no different.  I also expect all his efforts to fail.  The California Constitution articles for recall are listed below:

CALIFORNIA CONSTITUTION

ARTICLE 2  VOTING, INITIATIVE AND REFERENDUM, AND RECALL

SEC. 13.  Recall is the power of the electors to remove an elective officer.

SEC. 14.  (a) Recall of a state officer is initiated by delivering
to the Secretary of State a petition alleging reason for recall.
Sufficiency of reason is not reviewable.  Proponents have 160 days to file signed petitions.
  (b) A petition to recall a statewide officer must be signed by
electors equal in number to 12 percent of the last vote for the
office, with signatures from each of 5 counties equal in number to 1 percent of the last vote for the office in the county.  Signatures to recall Senators, members of the Assembly, members of the Board of Equalization, and judges of courts of appeal and trial courts must equal in number 20 percent of the last vote for the office.
  (c) The Secretary of State shall maintain a continuous count of the signatures certified to that office.

SEC. 15.  (a) An election to determine whether to recall an officer and, if appropriate, to elect a successor shall be called by the Governor and held not less than 60 days nor more than 80 days from the date of certification of sufficient signatures.
  (b) A recall election may be conducted within 180 days from the date of certification of sufficient signatures in order that the election may be consolidated with the next regularly scheduled election occurring wholly or partially within the same jurisdiction in which the recall election is held, if the number of voters eligible to vote at that next regularly scheduled election equal at least 50 percent of all the voters eligible to vote at the recall election.
  (c) If the majority vote on the question is to recall, the officer is removed and, if there is a candidate, the candidate who receives a plurality is the successor.  The officer may not be a candidate, nor shall there be any candidacy for an office filled pursuant to subdivision (d) of Section 16 of Article VI.

SEC. 16.  The Legislature shall provide for circulation, filing, and certification of petitions, nomination of candidates, and the recall election.

SEC. 17.  If recall of the Governor or Secretary of State is
initiated, the recall duties of that office shall be performed by the Lieutenant Governor or Controller, respectively.

SEC. 18.  A state officer who is not recalled shall be reimbursed by the State for the officer's recall election expenses legally and personally incurred.  Another recall may not be initiated against the officer until six months after the election.

SEC. 19.  The Legislature shall provide for recall of local
officers. This section does not affect counties and cities whose charters provide for recall.

SEC. 20.  Terms of elective offices provided for by this
Constitution, other than Members of the Legislature, commence on the Monday after January 1 following election.  The election shall be held in the last even-numbered year before the term expires.

I believe that in CA, unlike the Prez and VP, the Lt. Gov. and the Governor are separate entities on that ballot, so Bustamante can do whatever he wants pretty much independently of Davis.  What's funny is that Bustamante is telling the peeps to vote no on recall and yes on Bustamante...so it's like he's supporting Davis, but then he's not.  However, Bustamante has tried (unsuccessfully) to block the recall and/or appoint himself governor, against the rules laid down by the state constitution, and did set the recall election on the last possible day.

His numbers already give him that distinction.
