Subject: For Aussies who use this site...

Written By: boris66au on 06/19/03 at 05:12 a.m.

Not quite sure where to stick this post so I guess here's as good as any.

There's an advert on TV at the moment for Extra Dry beer I think.
Does anyone recognise the music used??

Tongue ad tied up in public complaints
By BRAD CLIFTON

A tongue that leaves a sleeping man's mouth late at night to hunt for beer is the latest TV advertisement to offend viewers.

The Advertising Standards Bureau has received several complaints about the ad for Tooheys Extra Dry beer.

The board will now meet to decide whether the ad is in breach of any codes.

Regarded by its creators as an innovation in television animation, the advertisement – titled The Quest – features a computer-generated tongue that pops out of a man's mouth as he sleeps and sets off in search of a Tooheys Extra Dry.

Accompanied by the pumping soundtrack of Satisfaction by Ministry of Sound, the tongue slides along the street, into a neighbouring house, past dancing revellers and finally to an ice-filled bath.

The organ then dives into the freezing water, retrieves a beer and drags it back home where it places the bottle in the man's mouth.

London-based visual effects company The Mill – which was responsible for scenes in such films as Gladiator, Tomb Raider and Harry Potter – used a pig's tongue to design the commercial's incredibly life-like star.

But it seems the realistic nature of the effects proved too much for some viewers, who told the bureau they suffered a range of responses, from offence to nausea.

"We have got complaints about it, but the bureau hasn't looked at it yet," a spokeswoman for the standards bureau said.

Margaret Zabel, marketing director of national brands for brewer Lion Nathan, yesterday admitted the company had received some negative comments about the ad's "gross-out factor" but said overall the response had been positive.

But she said the overwhelming response from both consumers and retailers had been favourable.

"The industry response has been very positive towards the advertisement and we've had very good feedback from our customers," she said.

"There is an element of surprise in the commercial, with the tongue, because it's an unusual situation.

"Overall, what we have found from consumers is that the tongue is a little bit of a personality and its whole journey is quite engaging.

"We have received the odd negative feedback because of the commercial's gross-out factor but we have found that is quickly overcome."

Martin Rippon, managing director of creative agency Brown Melhuish Fishlock, which developed the roaming tongue concept, denied the commercial was in bad taste.

"Anything that's new and different, some people may find it surprising when they first see it," Mr Rippon said.

"But we don't believe we have made anything distasteful or gross."

The commercial is one on a list of around 40 recent advertisements that have attracted public complaints.

Others include the Lleyton Hewitt Sorbent toilet paper ad and commercials for McDonald's, Holden and Kelloggs.

McDonald's recently withdrew an ad for its "Ragin' Cajun Chicken Burger" after the bureau received almost 50 public complaints.

The commercial, depicting a man with his clothing on fire, was ruled too distressing for viewers.

Funniest commercial I ever saw was for Fosters Beer.  They threw the remote control and hit a guy in the head, then he turned the channel on the tv.

G'day, if anybody can cheer one up, it's the Aussies.  When I was in Italy, met this Aussie couple who had a car, and we went looking for this restaurant.  The guy kept saying "Ay Sheizer" everytime he made a wrong turn or we got lost.  His wife kept scolding him saying it was embarrassing me.  I thought it funny and I say "Ay Sheizer" to this day.  Are they  Austrailian words or like German or Dutch or something?

Thank you Tripsmom!!! The tongue leaving the guys mouth is pretty gross to say the least but the music's good.

They get away with alot more over here on TV than they would have in the UK...at least when I lived there.

I nearly fell off my seat when we first got here and there was an ad which finished with the words "you lucky bastards"

I think "Shiezer" is the German "Sheisse" pronounced with an Aussie accent...

I think it's a great commercial. The tongue thing is a little distasteful, but I like the fact that the party it goes too actually looks like a real party. I keep thinking about what the guy's tongue would taste like after walking around on a road, over a dirty floor and a dusty old sofa and then swimming in a bath full of beer bottles. You'd need more than a beer to get those tastes out of your mouth.

This is so strange, the Aussies speak English, I speak English, but I don't understand a word of what they are saying!

OK...

there was an ad on TV for a "ute" (utility vehicle - usually has  a flat "tabletop" tray behind a two-door cabin).

To illustrate the vehicle's toughness, all sorts of things would go wrong as the ute ran out of control, with the affected people (including the dog!) saying "Bugger!" while the ute escaped without a scratch.  ;D

Thanks, Pacho, that clears it up, ya see, Utes are a native American Indian tribe, very noble people.  We call it an SUV or sport utility vehicle, so that's cleared up.  But, "bugger" yikes, isn't that what gentleman do in prison?!

A "ute" is a pick-up truck.

You're right as to what "bugger" means; in this part of the world, it's a light curse word that means just about anything you want. :)
