Subject: You Feel Old When...

Written By: MethodActor85 on 06/26/03 at 05:46 p.m.

I'm 17, so I'm still young enough, but I feel old whenever I'm around middle schoolers and realize that they weren't even alive until about 1990 or 1991. My mind refuses to see anyone born in the ninties as being older than about 6, so the thought that kids born in 1990 are now turning thirteen really boggles my mind.

Whenever I see that sign in the stores that say, "You can't purchase tobacco unless you were born before this day's date in 1985" I just think," Wow, all '85 babies like me are now turning legal age." I still feel about 13, so the thought of being 18 soon feels weird.

I feel old at 18 sometimes. Every year, when the new freshman come in, I think "did I ever look that young?" It's still weird to go and vote for me. I voted for the first time in the local primaries. Oh yeah! I was part of that 20% voter turnout! Adulthood still hasn't sunk in for me yet.

MethodActor, for feck's sake, you are 17!!

17 is just about when all your human faculties are at their peak, how on Earth can you feel old!? Please, for my sake, just focus on enjoying yourself now and not waste your time feeling "old" next to "middle schoolers" (whatever they are).

Methodactor

I left school the year you were born so I think I'm slightly more qualified to talk about feeling old.

That said, as I have said on another thread recently, I don't feel grown up most of the time.  It's still a shock to me that most people regard me as being an adult.  I suppose I must be though, I've been married for 11 years this year and my daughter starts school!

Only 17 and you feel old?

I'm a bit over ten years older than that.  I didn't feel old at all at 17.

You feel old when you see movie stars that were hot 20 years ago looking quite haggard and wrinkled.

Or TV stars.  Hard to believe the big 80's rock bands have all turned into fat, old guys.  Weird.  That makes you feel old.

But those youngsters will be old soon enough.  And their music that they think is so hip and cool will be just as dated as the previous generation's music is.  That'll show the jerks!!!

Yeah, and I'm another ten years on you... ten years ago I had my first child: then I started feeling old.  And it gets worse as my children start to learn things in school that I didn't touch till I was in my teens and can still remember being taught.

Feeling old at 17?  Grow up, please ;-)

Geeze MA85, I'm just about old enough to be your GRANDFATHER!!!  I'm 57.  And EVERYTHING still works.  I must admit that at 30 I felt old.  Now I feel younger than ever.  Yeah, I have my aches and pains, but mostly from my active life.  Hauling up the main sail, trimming the jib, pulling up the anchor.  Give me those aches and pains any day!!!!  To me, you're just a baby, with you're whole life before you.  Stop fretting about how old you are and figure out what you want from the rest (may it be a loooooong rest) of you life, AND GO FOR IT.  With my best wishes for your success.

Guys don't rag on him too much.  What he feels is what he feels.

MethodActor85, I am 10 years older then you.  I was born in 1975, and yes back in 1993 I remember feeling old when I was about to turn 18 and be a "legal adult".  So it's not weird for you to feel old.  I even remember a girl I knew back in 1993 was real upset about turning 18 and how we were no longer kids.

But the truth is, you will start to really feel old when you get to be about 24.  That is when you realize you are closer to 30 then 19.  That's also when you realize that your generation is nothing special, just another generation passing through humanity.  And you realize there is nothing different between you and a 50 year old, except they are on another point of life.  (does that make sense?)

Anyway, come back here in 2009, 2010 and you will know exactly what I am talking about.  It all goes by so fast dude.  One minute I was a no good punk 90210 kid, now I got a 10 year high school reunion to attend.  ugghhh...  And when you start to remember fairly clearly what happened 20 years ago, the world is never the same.

Yup, those kids born in the early 90's will be clueless to a lot of the stuff you grew up with.  And they will only know like the very late 90's too.  That has always been annoyance many of us have had with you guys born in the 80's, you guys only know 1989 or at best 1988.  Those kids born in the 90's will be the same way.

Expect to hear this kind of stuff from kids born in the 90's:

"Kurt Cobain?  Whose he?"

"What in the world is a Nirvana?"

"I saw Titanic when I was 3 years old back in 1997"

"I don't remember Bill Clinton when he was president"

"My dad listens to Pearl Jam"

See, now you guys born in the 80's are starting to know how those of us born in the 70's have been feeling for some years now when we see YOU guys.

Well, I made a reference to Pearl Jam to someone who's actually a year older than I am and she didn't get it. It was really, really weird.

I am feeling that whole "I'm turning 18 this year so I'm no longer a kid" thing. Eighteen sounds just that much closer to twenty than seventeen does, and I'm already starting to feel a separation from the whole teenaged mindset 'cause I know that I'm almost done with my teen years. God, I knew a bunch of people who were very upset about turning twenty and losing their status as a teenager...I'm sure I won't be upset when my turn to enter the 20's comes in '05, but it'll still be odd.

I can already remember 10 years ago pretty clearly, and the fact that my niece who was born in 1994 is turning NINE this year makes me feel old. In my mind, 1994 couldn't have possibly been 9 years ago.

And I have a teacher who's having a mid-life crisis who was born in 1968. I still see people born in the late 1960's as these strapping twentysomethings(blame it on watching Friends too much), so the thought that people I think of as still being youngish are having mid-life crisises is odd. It makes me think that mine isn't that far off.

I'm working with a batch of 18-20 year olds and that makes me feel old sometimes. It really hit me the other day when I was clothes shopping and I looked at some stuff thinking wow I love that and then had to admit to myself I would never wear it so there was no point buying it. My fiance is 5 years younger than me that bothers me sometimes but mostly I don't think about it.

Like I said dude, it only gets worse.  You're not even 18 yet, you are just at the very very, VERY tip of the iceberg of "feeling old".  You are just now starting to discover that generation gaps can actually run two ways, and it will not stay the one way street it has been for you forever.  You're now finding out that you can actually be on the older end of a generation gap.  But keep in mind you're only 17, 18, you're still so young.  I was born in 1975, think how bad people my age feel.  I remember being around your age back in the early and mid 1990's like it was yesterday.  It is unreal when I think that I am only 2 years away from being a 30 year old.  I never thought this would happen.  I got a 10 year high school reunion this year.

It gets worse when you start to remember with vivid accuracy what happened 20 years ago.  And it gets worse when those kids born in the 90's become teenagers and start asking you stupid questions about the decade.  Like, "How much did a hotdog cost in 1999?" or something retarded like that.  Or they ask you for help on some school project on the 90's because you were 14 in 1999 and they think you must know everything about the decade.  Man I always get asked questions about the 80's, cause I was 14 in 1989.  This will happen sooner then you expect.

Time has a way of sneaking up on you.

I think the concept of age hits people as they hit a milestone birthday-18 being one of those. I too, hit a milestone birthday this year and the thought of being (gulp)0 years old is a little on the scary side. But, I can say, that I don't actually feel that old. When people ask me how old I am, I usually ask them how old do they think. I have had answers that range from mid 20s to mid 40s (the upper end have been from a lot younger people). Then I tell them that I am 143. I lie about my age.  ;) Age is just a number.

Now to add a bit of social commentary (not politics) to this thread.  Think about the extent to which media images, which focus on youth and idealized bodies (love those) help focus us, and how mouc that discourse determines our response to age and aging.  As one commontator put it, older people, especially women, disappear from commercials, except when they wander through looking for laxatives.  My widowed dad is 83, dating, and enjoying life.  More power to him.  But its the younger set that has the $$$ to spend and can be tapped.  We older folks are set in our ways.  Think about it.

Right now though I'm just worried about aproaching my 20th year, because they say that's when your metabolism really starts to slow down.

At 20?  Jeeze, glad nobody told ME that.  While its true that (as a result of some knee injuries) I can't do some of the things I used to enjoy (baseball, vollyball) that has nothing to do with metabolism.  And I can tell you that when it comes to most things that I enjoy, I do them now (at 57 - yes I know that sounds VERY old to you) more often, and enjoy them more than when I was 20.  The one exception is spicy foods, which now give me REALLY bad heartburn  :'( Used to love those jalipenos  :'(  ;)

I'm only 21 and still feel quite young, yet just the other day I was thinking about when I was 17 and my boss was 24.  She was dancing round the office to a song and I thought "How sad is she, she's so old!!"
That makes me feel terrible now!!

Yeah it all comes back to haunt you sooner then you expect.  Kids today probably think you're a bit old school since you're 21.

I'm 25, and I feel so bad for thinking that 30 was old.  When I was younger and I'd see a 30 year old guy with long hair, I'd think "What's his problem?  Look at him trying to hold on to his youth with the long hair and he's so old".  Now I find myself scolding teenagers who think that 30 is old, and I remind myself that I used to think the same way.  I've rethought all the ages, not just 30.  But I've also rethought 40 and 50 and 60.  If a 50 year old guy wants to have long hair, what's the big deal?

Every human being has preconcieved notions about certain ages until they get close to them. When I was a teenager I used to think that 30 year olds were like middle aged people and that 40 and over was old.
