Subject: Anime soon to be America's new Cartoon Style?

Written By: DizzleJ on 07/03/03 at 05:32 p.m.

Starting in 2000, there has been a constant increase in Japanimation in America. First with Pokemon and then Dragonball Z. (Dragonball Z is awesome by the way ;D)
Then Gundam wing started and now Cowboy Bebop is big. Also, Yu-Gi-Oh is big amongst the elementary kids. Soon Dragonball GT will start up and I am sure many will be watching that! Many people around my age seem to like some show that is anime. (I am 18) So many 30 year olds may dislike anime, but I wouldn't be suprised if Disney started making all thier movies in anime!

Anime's been taking over, IMO, since the late 90's. I miss the days when cartoon people looked normal, like G.I. Joe. Heck, even the ThunderCats looked more like normal humans. Nowadays, we have cartoon people that look like giant cue balls with eyes and extremities.

Disney has already been putting out to market anime-style movies like "Kiki's Delivery Service" (Rated G) and "Spirited Away" (Rated PG). As excellent as these two movies are, I wouldn't want to see any motion picture or television company adopt anime as their only style of animation.

Not to mention that their mouths never move at the same time they speak.

Sorry to pop your bubble, but I can't stand DBZ. Too much talking. Too much of that talking is stupid. Too confusing. Too weird. Too little happens in each episode.

Everytime something looks like it's about to happen you have to find out what's going to happen "in the next episode of Dragon Ball-Z!"

When anime is good, it is very good (Princess Monanoke, Spirited away, etc.) When it is bad, it is awful! (Pokemon)

I like the animation...it's more unique and better then looking like plain old boring people that we have to see and spew everyday......and even we dont draw people like they are normal...I'm sorry but like princess Jasmin come on? nobody can look like that with those HUGE eyes..I swear some of our animation is worser than theirs and at least they draw Big people

Cowboy Bebop and Gundam are the only, "real" anime on TV these days.

By "real" I mean aimed for an older audience.
Although the American versions are edited.

In Japan, Dragonball Z has nudity and swearing in it. (The way it should be!)

Unfortunatly, most people won't be able to experiance great shows like Galaxy Express 999, and Patlibor.

I thought there weren't any swearwords in Japanese.  Although, someone did say it wasn't the case but they're argument was basically 'You think they just say "Oh, dear," when they drop something on their foot?' :-/

No No No.....all you have to do is go into a video store with a large anime section to look for this.

Some anime movies have two versions, a la Street Fighter.
The one that is shown on TV, and the uncut version.

I thought you meant the version they showed in Japan rather than a pre-T.V. Western version.  ::)   :P Sorry

We have a fairly large anime DVD section in the store I work at.  Every time I go near it, my head starts to ache and I get slightly nauseous.  I'm not joking.

I try not to be prejudiced against it.  I'm sure there is good anime out there.  But, just like with techno, I would rather just stay as far away from it as possible than actually seek it out.  The animation style really does make my head hurt, and it doesn't help that my little brother is a freak for these things.  At one point in my life, I could not take a step in my home without walking on Pokemon cards.  I had to clear them off my chair if I wanted to sit down.  I had to pick them out of my food.  There are still little piles of Pokemon cards here and there, but they've mostly been replaced by Yu-Ji-Oh cards now.

(For the record, Yu-Ji-Oh really really is the most awful thing I have ever laid eyes on.  Imagine one of those card games where every player shouted out their strategy and their every move.  Like, "I move this card over to the discard pile and draw three!"  That's the show, basically.)
