Subject: Vegan Advice

Written By: zippo on 07/12/03 at 08:52 a.m.

I am thinking of going all vegetarian for a few months.

Eat nothing but salads.  With no dressing.

I wanna lose this last annoying ten pounds.

Any suggestions on simple, easy to prepare stuff to eat.

I don't mind consuming a little cheese and egg here and there.

I ate a lot of McDonald's side salads and Carl's Jr. garden salads the other day.

And just drank water.

Any easy to prepare foods for this way of eating would be helpful.  Or places to buy them, etc.  Maybe I should just eat raw fruit.  Like eight bananas a day and water.

Suggestions?  I have no problem eating meat.  Just sick of it.  I did a low carb diet (yuck) and I want to get off it now.

I sense an element of the sardonic to this, but i'll play along anyway...

Yup. I found veganism to be a good way of keeping your weight down.

Can't remember too much of what i ate, but Hippie-run health-stores are a good place to look.

If you are worried about protein in-take: i ate a lot of beans and nuts etc. and seemed to do OK.

Potatoes are always good (to be sure, to be sure, begorrah). Just boil up a few spuds, easily done and you can get them nice and cheap at markets and stuff.

If you are doing this for health (or more accurately, image) reasons then - although, if you are American, which i believe you are (no offense if you're not), i'm not sure if you have this range in the U.S. - Linda McCartney do a good range of healthy meat substitutes which aren't technically vegan in a lot of cases but are good nonetheless and a staple part of my diet (again - most likely not available in the States) was RealEat veggie burgers, although, without egg they tend to be a bit crumbly and crispy.

And again, i'll mention this anyway, although since you are doing this for image reasons, the actual difference in fat content isn't great but if you need a vegan substitute for ice cream there is some stuff called Swedish Glace (i forget the name of the company) which is all-in-all pretty much as good as the same thing.

Hope you found this helpful (or refering back to my first sentence - amusing) even without the ethic-orientated stuff.

:)

Take vitamin/mineral tablets with your diet so that you don't lose out on vital nutrition.

Best advice is enjoy your food.

I'm not suggesting they are essential, I think they would be beneficial.  :)

Potatoes?  Breads and tortilla rolls?

Hmmm.

I figure I should avoid those carbs.

zippo, perhaps you should seek some genuine medical advise before switching to a new diet. But I will advise you that only eating fruit and nothing else is extremely bad for your health. Fruit alone doesn't provide the body with enough protein or carbohydrates. Modern vegetarian diets are very good, but see a doctor before you start one.

20 MINUTES!!!  It'd be burned beyond recognition by then!

BOT, you want to avoid canned veggies.  What I found worked well was making veggie omelets.  You take a sweet onion, some peppers (red & yellow taste the best), and sautee them.  Once they're carmelized, add a couple of eggs, whipped with about a tsp of milk or water.  Keep moving it around until the eggs are fully cooked.  Add a little cheese on top.  I ate these almost every day when I was doing the lo-carb diet because I got sick of all the meat, too.  Most grocery store chains (Albertson's, Jewel, Eagle, Dominick's, etc) have a section devoted (or at least an aisle) to organic/vegetarian foods.

Why? Nothing serious I hope. We have a lot of canned veggies in the house because for some reason my girlfriend doesn't like fresh vegetables.

I think they need to change the criteria when 14 out of 20 topics are hot. :)
