Subject: Question for you internet-savvy types...

Written By: 80sRocked on 07/14/03 at 01:38 p.m.

I want some opinions/suggestions on this:

I am wanting to create just a basic el-cheapo(free) website to put some family pictures on, but I don't know which site service to use.  There's so many:  Geocities, Tripod, etc etc, but they all seem the same to me.

If any of you have ever used any free site service and had good luck with it, which one would you recommend?

Thanks in advance. :)

Okay, I'm by no means an expert, but you might want to check and see if your ISP offers it to you.  Both my old one and my new one offer a free website.  Just a thought.

The other thing you can do is host it on your pc, if you have a good enough speed connection. You can get everything you need for free. Apache offers a free web server program (http://www.apache.org/). Of course, if you turned your pc off or the connection to the internet was disconnected, people would lose your webpage. But if you have a fast enough connection and an extra pc you do not care leaving on 24/7, this might be a better solution than some hosting service with their popups.

I think places like yahoo may have "premium services" where you pay a few dollars and they host it for you.

Thanks John, I will look into that.

I use Geocities. It has its faults (advertising), but from my experience with free servers, it's not quite as annoying as Tripod, Lycos, et al. that assault the viewer with multiple pop-up windows. I also like Geocities because it has a reasonably good hit counter function and stats tables and is pretty user friendly compared to some of the others.

My mate's site used to be on freenetname; i think that only had one or two banners and you got a free domain name too.

I'm using http://www.anycities.com  for my ego site.

They offer a decent little no-frills free homepage plan.   Upload is via the web.  Your URL will be your username tacked onto the end of their URL.  The only ad they place on your pages is a very simple white "tell me how to promote my homepage" banner that appears wherever you have a body or end body tag.  (Iow, top and bottom of each page.)   Load times are very good compared to other free-hosts I've used... important if you're serving graphics.

how much traffic is alloted per month?  I checked out their site, and there's no info on how much space is allowed and traffic, etc etc.

When I signed up, they advertised the free plan as 50 meg storage with a 1 meg limit on individual files and unlimited bandwidth.  It doesn't look like they still have the comparison chart for the free plan up... leastwise, I can't find it.  If transfer allowance is a major concern, you may want to e-mail them to confirm that it's still unlimited.

My ISP gives me 5MB (or it might be 10MB)... when I wanted to post MP3s on-line, I had to look for a bit more space.  The best free deal I found was with prohosting.com which gave 50MB space and I think it's 2GB per month bandwidth.  OK, so there's some banners, but it's pretty good as a freebie.
