Subject: St. Anger -- Your thoughts

Written By: FOXVOX on 07/16/03 at 09:15 p.m.

Frankly, I'm St. ANGRY.    >:(
I've been listening (& playing) these guys since 'Kill 'em all' and I'm sorry to say that this is THE WORST album/CD Metallica has ever recorded.  I'm done with 'em.  Too bad millions of people are being introduced to them with this crap. Basically, the sound has gone on a diet and I'd prefer that James go back to shouting the notes when he can't hit them instead of singing them under the pitch.

Painful.

I thought they lost the plot ages ago.

Funny how they pretty much closed down Napster single-handedly and tried to sue a load of their fans on the premise that they'd downloaded a couple of their songs, but it's alright in theory ('cause them aren't real prisoners, right? I haven't really watched the vid that closely - or in it's entirety) to put on a concert for convicted murders and rapists.  Nice logic.

I stopped listening to Metallica when Lars went crazy and attacked napster and everyone who used the service. And I see the hypocoracy you mentioned, about the video on MTV where metallica went to a prision to give a concert to covnicted criminals. Interesting they want to have a "bad @ss image" but in the end they threaten to sue their customers. What can be more bad @ss then crying to a lawyer "someone downloaded a song i did in the 80s, and they say $15 is too much to pay for a cd which costs two cents to make". Metallica sucks.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this CD was a disappointment.

It wasn't a disappointment to me  ;)

I think "Reloaded" was about the twilight of these aging rockers career. I haven't listen to the album, but the single is not one of their shining moments (if they ever had a "shining" moments. :-/)

I haven't heard the new album, and I don't think I will either.  I have heard a lot about how bad it is.  But then again I am not a fan of Metallica (I only like a couple of their songs).

Metallica has always put out crap albums.

I never liked them.

The only thing of theirs I liked was a cover of a song of theirs on the soundtrack for the film Friends and Neighbors.

They did a string quartet version of Enter Sandman I think.

Other than that.  I don't care for their ugly, crunching sound.  The lead vocalist's voice makes me ill.

All their songs sound the same.

Metallica should've retire with diginity after releasing the illfated "Reloaded" CD instead of putting out more bad material.

Though I'm not a fan and I know that some past rockers still put out good (not great) material.

The same for Madonna and Michael Jackson.  :-/

I completely concur.  IMO, the self-titled "black" CD was their absolute pinnacle.  And this is why I am ruffled... not that Rolling Stone is the sole measuring stick by which good albums should be rated, but they gave this 4 out of 5 stars and made reference to the band going back to the "black" album sound.     ::)   Bah!    >:(

How curious ... I'm listening to a cheesy web-radio station of crappy metal and pop-metal from my day, and for some reason they've stuck Motorhead's rendition of "Enter Sandman" into the playlist.

I think it might be cooler than Metallica's.

At any rate, I finally heard most of the new album, and while it's like almost any Metallica album - I won't turn it off, but they don't have to worry about me downloading this one - it actually sounds more like Metallica than I'm used to hearing them sound lately. And for that I give them a small amount of applause. There's no question that the lyrics are some of Hetfield's worst, but this album sounds more like the Metallica I remember from before the Black Album, and definitely before that amazingly awful "Hero" song.

The best Matallica was Enter Sandman.
"Off to never never land!"  That was there peak that I doubt they can rise to again.

my favorite metallica songs:
one
the Unforgiven
Nothing else matters
Enter sandman
and basicly everything else off the Black album

their version of Turn the page was pretty good though

I'm bored, so I'll type-up my long thought on Metallica -

Metallica was quite awesome in the 80's. They had a "rawness" and a fresh edge that distinguished them from the rest.

Metallica then attained unparalleled recognition once they played their stuff during an MTV music awards ceremony (I think 1989?). I think I remember that episode also being the first time a hard rock/metal band had ever been invited to play an awards ceremony.

Soon thereafter, Metallica changed their sound to appeal to the masses and gain a greater audience (I wonder why? - *Sarcasm alert*) .

I very much liked the "black" Metallica album. However, the loss of their raw, edgy sound was plainly evident. Thus, they lost a great many of their original fans. I didn't particularly care because I'm not the "fanatic" type. I figured some musicians do what they feel they have to do, especially when record execs begin throwing large amounts of money at 'em.

Anyway, I was very put-off by their thing with Napster because it reaked of greed. They'd sold-out to such a degree (If I didn't care before, I surely did at that point because it interfered with my personal enjoyment of Napster) that they couldn't even bear the thought of not being compensated every second of every day.

I still listen to most of their stuff up to "Reloaded" and if I catch one of their recent tunes on the radio, I won't turn it off. I just don't buy their stuff anymore, not that I'm missing out on much. Their stuff borders on lousy anymore. :P

My top 10 Metallica faves:

In no particular order:

1) Master Of Puppets
2) Eye Of the Beholder
3) One
4) For Whom The Bell Tolls
5) Fade To Black
6) Whiplash
7) Blackened
8) Wherever I May Roam
9) Don't Tread On Me
10) No Leaf Clover

Metallica was probably my favorite band of the 80's. Fade To Black is the first song I remember getting late night radio air-play on the hard rock station WNPQ here in Ohio. I loved Kirk's lightning-fast yet melodic guitar solos and James' growly shouting vocals. Yeah!!!

I think Master Of Puppets was their peak album. Their next album ...And Justice For All was great too, but was more progressive in it's direction. Of course, then came the infamous Black album. It was ok, but like Hairspray says, they started losing their edge. They started sucking at this point, but they still put some good songs on this album.

By the time Load came out, the sucking noises had taken over. They shocked the world by cutting their hair (any correlation to sucking here?). There was really nothing I liked about that album, or any of their stuff after that, save for a few songs (Fuel, I Disappear, and their cover of BOC's Astronomy).

Haven't heard any of the St. Anger stuff...don't care if I do or don't. I still listen to old Metallica.

Oh, yeah, and as far as Napster...re-f'in'-diculous...
